I just pulled the trigger on a Macbook Pro, what's your thoughts about getting the Apple Care Protection plan? 3 years for $280.

I put nearly $4K into my MacBook Pro and peripherals/software the day I bought it and didn't pay for the protection plan. The thing hasn't gone back to them once since I bought it 2 1/2 years ago. The only problem I have had was a wire being severed on my AC power supply, but that was my fault.

You get a one year warranty (or at least you used to) when you buy it, which in my opinion, is long enough for a manufacturer problem to present itself. YEMV.

Maybe I'm missing something here but didn't you have to "borrow" money from snow to buy some doodad a few weeks ago? So you can beg your parents to finance close to $2,000 for this computer (probably would have been cheaper to fix the old one) but you gotta bum money from someone on the other side of the globe for $20 to buy a part because you can't get any credit of your own? Or was that just because the Mac was "for school" and whatever part you wanted was just for fun?

Eh, whatever. Have fun with your wind-up toy.

I am still fighting myself about this but I think it is not worth it.

Well there is no rush for me to decide now if I want to buy the 3-year extended warranty. Apple gives you a year from date of purchase to think about it.

My Mac is 3 years old now and the Nvidia graphics card died the other day. I didn't purchase apple care and thought I was gonna get raped when they fixed it.

I was without my comp for 3 days but they fixed it for free and replaced the aluminum case too because I had dented a corner by dropping it, also for free. Awesome company :)

I bought a MacBook Pro three and a half years ago with AppleCare. The SuperDrive died a few months after the AC expired. The local Apple Store fixed it anyway at no charge. I also have a PowerMac G5, liquid cooled. After four years it sprung a leak that took out the power supply, processor and main logic board (an $1,800 repair). I did not get AppleCare on this computer, but again, Apple fixed it all at no charge.

    How cool is that?

It's not so much cool as brilliant P.R. Any smart tech knows that the P.S., CPU, and mainboard for a 4 year old computer shouldn't cost more than $200, 150 if you're hooked with a distro, which they obviously are. Ask the other techs on the forum.
1.5 hour of labor, they tell you it's $1800 repair, but for you free- for 300 actual cost or less, they've got a return buyer ( you) and you tell all your friends how great they are.
Much better R.O.I. than those stupid Mac vs. PC commercials, no?

Self-follow: also, if I were Apple, I'd be terrified of a breakdown of a liquid-cooled P.C. because that has class action all over it, wrote large. So they really made lemonade out of that P.R. lemon.

Fwiw, my daughter had a liquid cooled Hitachi laptop (circa 2000) that never had any such problems. We finally donated it last year.

I love it. YES (notice big cap), you need to buy AppleCare, strongly recommended. There's enough "inconsistency" if you follow macrumors forums. Besides, AppleCare has been known for its hassle-free records in replacing and taking care of problems.

You do have 1 year to decide whether you want to buy AppleCare or not. So, take your time and browse MacRumors for incidents..

Think I am going to go buy it. Took mie in for a logic board repair but it was under warranty.

I think I am going to buy this around New Years. Any configuration changes would you suggest? Is the base config enough for Final Cut Pro and Premiere CS3?

    http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC561LL/A?mco=MTg2OTUwMTk

I talked to a few computer guys and they said a Gaming PC /= Video Editing PC, so I guess the Mac will do better in this regard. I can't even run Final Cut Pro on an Alienware.

Macs are not gaming machines. Period.

If you do any sort of graphics/video editing, then they're great.

That's what I am saying. When I mention "Alienware" and that I want to use it for graphics/video editing, people tell me those are gaming machines and not what I am looking for.

Plus you can't really run certain software like FCP on a Windows machine legally. I think there is a way to do that (Hackintosh?) but I am not sure. If the software is only written for Mac it can't run on Windows right?

Right and...wrong. The software can often be made to run in Windows even if it was specifically written for Apple OS, but generally it's not a very good option. There are emulators available that you an run your software in, and they do a fairly good job.

From a hardware point of view, a gaming machine is more than capable of running graphics and video editing, much more than similarly priced Mac hardware. GPU processing has taken big leaps in the recent times and can now be used for many things, especially coding video.

Pick your software first, then pick the hardware. If the software runs on Windows, Linux and Mac, a gaming machine will work better, dollar for dollar, than Mac. If it runs on Mac only, well, there's your answer.

Trying not to detract from BAF's thread:

I posted in the above about an Alienware vs. Mac Pro and Mike (Face) steered me towards the Alienware. But I can't run certain software. What would be best then?

I am still awake from studying... took a break and looked at the HD options and saw that 2TB was the max for each drive. I think a good config will be a small OS drive, with larger storage drives.

Probably will go with the 8-core, the 12 core Xeon would be overkill. 6GB of RAM is all I need, as I won't be running too many programs at once.
