The 5802 is leaps and bounds better than anything Emo has put out or will ever put out. Yes, it is discontinued but it had a long product lifecycle run of about 10 years. Pick a used one up without hesitation. They probably stopped producing them a few years ago.

Hang in there man. This forum is still full of great information. That fact is that you probably can't go wrong with an Emotiva or an Adcom amp. I have heard from some of the geezers on this forum that Emotiva receives the same criticism once exacted against Adcom when it first arrived on the market. I guess the new guy always gets picked on.

Outlaw audio, SVS, and other direct sellers have been dealt the same kind of criticism in their infancy. Pissing on new brands is good because it encourages the new brand to continue to perform better. It weeds out those that can't compete.

Ovation is the only audio store that i know of that might have them. That said, i'm not terribly impressed with their demo rooms lately. The one on the south side has NO 2-channel stuff, and the only Adcoms in sight at the north side location that i went to last time were a pair of 565s that were sold upon arrival.

I'd just pull the trigger on one, listen to it, and if you like it, keep it. If you don't, sell it to get all your money back.

Where in Indy are you, anyways? I'm on the south side, and i'm always up for meeting new people with this sick obsession. :D I've got something that you may be able to try, but it's a bit far off the beaten path of what people are suggesting in this thread, and i imagine it would be met with a fair amount of gnashing teeth. ;)

And Harry if he'd be up to it. There's another guy on here that snatched a pair of 11Ts that's from the area as well. :)

rcook317: Your audio friend in this area is really Craigslist. I haven't bought anything from an audio store since i started this hobby. Just local CL finds and stuff off this site. I'm 100% sure that if there isn't something in the FS forum now to your liking, there will be in the near future.

I dumped my last Adcom (GFA555, didn't stack up against my M5150) a couple months back , otherwise i'd let you demo one and just see how you liked it.

With all the questions from noobs about Emotiva I think we should name this website

    Polkativa

Sure do get a lot of questions in regards to Emotiva. :D

    H9

I think the reason for that is Emo is talked up a great deal on other forums. Before I came here I was on AVS a lot and that's where I got the idea to buy Emotiva (not to mention Audioholics - Bleh!). People looking for more audio knowledge will eventually stumble upon CP and so they'll ask their questions here.

For the most part I think Polkies do a great job of answering people's questions (like the way this thread started out). Then you've got the one or two Emo fanboys and the few Emo haters (or maybe more fairly - haters of Emo fanboys :) ).

A view from a 'noob' (and a 41 year old noob at that).

I ask questions here because I have no first hand knowledge of any amps, I have no vested interest in Emotiva, Adcom or Krell - I had never heard any of those names 6 months ago.

Most sites I visit debate the need for a separate amp at all unless your speakers are clipping or you like things really loud. I was surprised by all the posts here from people who run the same speakers I do mentioning how much better they sound with extra power.

There are very few (if any) places here to try before you buy so I'm doing most of my purchases blind. I bought some very expensive (for me) new speakers unheard based on feedback from this site.

I take all posts with a grain of salt, I look for the moderate opinions rather than the haters or lovers.

I ordered an amp, it will be my first, if I like the difference it makes I will probably buy again. If I really like the difference I will move up the food chain as I have with my other components.

Not sure why people get so worked up, it's just a fun hobby...

Very nice post Adabro & right on the money. This is one of the few forums that understand & realize the benefits of separate amplification.

Congrats on your purchase & let us know how you like it.

The ones who insist on getting worked up about this stuff have no clue as to how foolish they end up looking over squabbles like this. I guess they just aren't happy until they cause an uproar, making others as unhappy as they are themselves.

I started reading this thread yesterday...and now I have no idea where it is going...what's the big deal...if the guy wants to buy an Emo or an Adcom online?--hey 'experience' is the important thing. You have to 'start' somewhere.

What I would recommend is that you "GO" to some of the Polk gatherings that seem to be popping up all over the country and hear a few different amps, speakers, etc. That will give you something to work with.

As for Adcoms online at Kmart or Sears...why not?
