emotiva vs adcom

Polk is actually well placed within the retail market. The penetration could be better but far more stalwarts of general consumer audio have dropped of the face of the planet....Polk, still kicking. I'd give Polk a B+.
You can buy Thiel/ Martin Logan/ Musical Fidelity by mail order now....even Velodyne used to be exclusive back in the day but Polk has always been at the level these manufacturers just entered. It's a smart move to diversify your market but going from high end audio retailer to Kmart? Talk about pulling out all the stops....yikes.
One can buy just about any piece of audio gear by mail order/Internet today, but that's not the point. I was referring to the mail order/Internet only audio businesses.
Yikes indeed, but it's worked well for Martha Stewart....or is she with Walmart? I don't shop either, so I'm not sure.Political Correctness'.........defined

Sure but how many of them started in mail order? I'm positive that Adcom's sales division 5 year plan didn't include Kmart. It doesn't bother me as I could care less.
Isn't the Martha Stewart example the polar opposite? Adcom is already a quality product, now sold locally, where Martha Stewart is a common product with a fancy smile on the packaging. I don't think the analogy really works but I bet we could get Jstas to create an army of ground pounders to punish the non-believers.
I understand what you mean Jesse...the jist of it at least. But...just not the bigger picture of the marketing aspect, of the original product, in relation to its target audience.
It's cool that Kmartiens can check out Adcom, agreed....but if they start selling Watt Puppies...I'm checking out man.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
If you re-read my original post I'm sure it will sink in eventually. Hint: Take note that I did not refer to either amp you mentioned.
You didn't have to. Nor did I contradict you. I simply stated that either brand offers both power and performance because your comment could be construed as suggesting otherwise (Since ADCOM and Emotiva are part of the thread's topic).

All he was doing was saying that if you're focused on power only, you're never going to get true performance. It had NOTHING to do with any brands, only a fundamental problem that affects many.

As long as you continue to think that serious power is what's required to get the best performance, you will continue to suffer with sub-par performance.
F1Nut has a good point here. I have a pair of Emotiva XPA-1 amps arriving in the coming year that I absolutely love paired with my RTia9s in my newly formed 2 channel HT system. But, I also have an Audio Research LS17 pre for 2 channel duty that offers excellent tube goodness (later this pre will be a cornerstone in my new 2 channel system). IMO, the pairing of SS amps and a tube pre is a match made in heaven. -

I think Sears bought K mart so it makes sense you could buy the Adcom in both places. What retail stores push Polk now that Circuit City is gone. Best Buy seems to push Sony and Yamaha speakers and it is the low end of there speaker line to boot. I used to listen to Polk speakers at Circuit City. Twenty years ago there was a serious Audio store named Hart electronics where you could hear high end pieces like the Polk SDA SRS speakers but the store closed when Circuit City came to town selling Polk low end gear. Any good audio gear such as Adcom, brought into common retail stores is a sight for sore eyes and ears in my opinion.Polk HT system 1: LSIC, LSI25 mains, LSI F/X rears, Lsi F/X rear centers,

BC - I'm as upset at the local audio shop demise as you appear to be, flag waving and all that ****. To think that our hifi has downgraded to the point of a pimply faced kid makes me want to go postal.
That being said what your local BB does in regards to sales practices is what it is. Polk has little control over retail practice unlike Bose. Polk Audio is a new product for the BB chain and I would expect the usual suspects to push what they know. It's got nothing to do with good, better, best type stuff. Isn't that in a strange way how it all works? I'm not yay or ney...just a user, buyer and observer.
This company isn't aggressive enough for my tastes and unless newborn babies are being barcoded with Polk logos, my job isn't done. One of the biggest questions I'm asked in my travels? "What speakers do you own?". I don't know, whatever I dig up. I have all kinds of stuff in storage and if I based my head in one place, I'd be useless. That's naturally subject to discussion.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? I like to go into the local best buy store and ask the so called twenty year old sales associate if I can bi-wire these speakers I am holding. The look on there face is typically a deer in head lights. Totally clueless. If I ask them anything technical it completely blows there mind and they have to run to see the manager. I am just messing with these kids, I already know the answer. It is sad for the hobby but at least there are places like the Polk forum to meet and discuss audio equipment. I have learned more things in a year here than anywhere else. I guess the best we can do is buy off Crutchfield for example test out the speakers or equipment and if we don't like it send it back. I miss the old days. Just a forty something guy venting.Polk HT system 1: LSIC, LSI25 mains, LSI F/X rears, Lsi F/X rear centers,

Interesting... I see that Kmart offers a 2-year warranty for $50.00. for the GFA-5500. Granted, the ADCOM warranty is 5 years, but at a price of $600.00, it may be worth it anyway.Hearing is believing. -

For those that are poo-pooing the fact that Sears and K-Mart are selling separates, you are looking at it all wrong. The fact that common folks can walk into their local store, see, touch and hear the product makes it easy for them to move up the ladder and does wonders for this hobby. These are folks that will never in a million years purchase an emo or any other audio gear off the internet.
It's also a very smart business move by Adcom as there are fewer and fewer of the mom and pop audio stores around these days for them to sell their products at. Polk would do well to look into doing the same.
Well said. It's the product not where it is sold. While it is not all good the small audio stores are going the way of the dodo bird at least there may be some place you can walk in and listen and touch something before buying. Sears actually have some good TVs at competitive prices. With all the questions from noobs about Emotiva I think we should name this website

It could be that CP (for the most part) has a decent rep for good info and people think they will get better unbiased comments from a more neutral site than the manufactures site. -

I think it's pretty great that Adcom, has found other outlets to sell their gear. without stores, they lose a huge market share. Those amps for sale at Kmart & Sears are current offerings not 20 year old products so what is your point?
More & more boutique music stores are going out of busines or are simply inaccessible. So putting their gear where people can see it, and go home with it can only be a good thing.

Great prices though. That 7705 is at least $2200 anywhere else. -
My guess is perhaps these are refurbs............I do caution anyone considering buying from them to really do the research.
Althought the 555 SE is pretty new to have a load of refurbs already and in regards to amps they never seemed to have too many issues. The DVDp GDV850 and GDV870 were real stinkers and most of what you see F/S these days are refurbs. I bought a refurb for less than $100 and WOW was the picture stunning, but it had the worst transformer hum both at the unit and thru my system I have ever heard. Luckily the guy took it back and resold it.
