I currently am running a music hall mmf-5 with the stock felt mat I feel this mat is transfering particles onto my records. Any suggestions on a better mat?

I have the Herbie's mat on my MMF 5.1, works great! Everything I've tried from Herbie's works great. The Herbie's brass/vibration dampening material pucks underneath your feet on your TT will do wonders.

I personally have the Extreme Phono Speed Mat on my MMF-7 and have been very pleased with it. Snagged it a few years back while @ Music Direct in Chicago. Was fortunate enough to have a knowledgeable sales person talk me out of the far more expensive ringmat.

Tom, why would you want that mat? It is less than desirable for coupling a record to the platter.

I used to have a mmf 5 which I later exchanged for the 5.1 The stock mats aren't bad. Dust will settle on the surface no matter what type of mat you use.

I found that using a Swiffer cloth before play and before storing back in the sleeves work great at removing large and very fine particles. It worked better for me than the record brush which I think can shove very fine particles deep into the groove. With the cloth you don't really add pressure, you just let the static attract the dust. Life is tougher without a cleaning machine lol.

...because it's gentle on the other side of the LP and I'd like a spare.

I'm working on other aspects of my rig at the moment. I'll get to the mat when the time comes. It sounds great as it is.....well, was. The TT is down right now because I chipped the glass platter trying to repair the tonearm. DOH!

After some research I'm going to go with the acrylic platter upgrade and not use a mat. That stock supplied mat causes a crapload of static electricity.

That is the way I use my VPI and my records make intimate contact with the delrin platter for maximum damping and record stabilization.

I clamp my records directly to the platter, never really thought about a mat. I wonder if I should try one? What is the purpose?

I would think for platters that aren't acrylic or delrin a good mat would be a plus. Also would probably be good on the lower end tables that use metal platters. Coupling a record to a glass platter can damage the record grooves so there is another application that would benefit from a good mat.

I know Rich (SCompRacer) uses a carbon fiber mat and loves it but I'm pretty sure his platter is made of MDF or a non-cousin of vinyl.

I'm another happy Herbies mat user. I use a clamp with mine. I get less background noise while using the clamp.

Hi Joe! The platter is 20 pounds of alloy and the Mat 1 is carbon graphite.
