Potential Industry Employers??

Ok so I've made the move from Austin, back to my hometown of Houston. The technology industry in general is dead right now, and I am having a tough time finding a job. I figured coming home to my close friends and family, and to a bigger city would help me out a bit.

So I'm pondering a career change, or at least something to hold me over till I can get another job in the technology industry.

I'm pondering on Tweeter, Circuit City (yuk), and a few other places to get an entry level or mid-level installer or sales position. Are there any other places that you can think of that I should try?

Thanks. Wish me luck. heh :)

Not sure. Could be a couple of months or a year. *shrug*

Like I said I'm pondering a career change into the audio industry, so hopefully any job would have long term potential.

Are you willing or able to go back to school for a little bit?

I could go to school, but I'm not sure how I would finance it. I'm pretty much on my own as I have been since I was 17.

I don't really want a BS job, I'd prefer something that will keep my interested while learning. Something like tweeter (who has many positions open here in Houston) or the Home Theater Store is what I prefer.

As far as Bose goes, I could never work for a company like that. :p

    What are you thinking shelbs?

    Well,

Its probably more training than you are hoping to do, but becoming a pharmacy tech is not a bad way to go. I'm not sure what the pharmacy laws are in Texas, nor do I know how much pharmacy techs make there, but in Washington, its not a bad way to go.

    Phuz,
ever consider to learn Oracle technology? I don't know what's your background, but it is one of the bright spot in technology space. Oracle 9i db is hot right now, check www.dice.com for openings.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I'm not really interested in being a pharmacy tech, or working with Oracle. When I first got into computers I had messed around with coding a little with html and some javascript, and hated it. So I went with technology based stuff instead of applications. I'm still not a big fan of programing.

I've got lots of technology skills, from desktop support to LAN/system admin, WAN. firewall, VPN, to NT and Exchange. And on and on.

Ever consider going into business for yourself? My wife is a cumputer geek, works in the county IS dept and does pretty well, BUT on the side she has a computer consulting business. She could stay busy full time but likes her regular job. She charges like $75-100 per hour for consulting. Not a bad part time job especially since she can write off all of her new computer stuff (toys) as a business expense.
    Just a thought...........

I've pondered that Ken, and may make it happen someday. Mostly this post was just to get advice on how to get a start in the high-fi/HT/audio industry. :)

After over 7 years of using computer and technology systems for at least 12 hours a day, I'm kinda sick of it. :)

    phuz,

I speak from my own experience and the advice of many wise folks, seek out what it is that you love and turn that into a career. If you do that, you can't go wrong and will be a much happier person in the long run.

If i were looking for audio sales type job.. i'd go with a high end audio store instead of the entry/mid level ones... only problem with that is that the high end stores usually have fewer customers.. but just think of all the cool stuff you could demo and play with.

At the low end stores... you'll be stuck with most likey Bose stuff. that should scare you away right there. :p

YOu may also want to think about looking into home security alarms. People are buying these things like crazy. There will always been a need for security. Just a thought.

Other far reaching jobs could be... working for a large corporation who has a audio/visual dept. Some companies have closed circuit systems they need people to operate and manage. some other companies have complete production studios, with cameras, audio equipment, lights, etc.

good luck.. the world is your oyster!

My dad works for the eastman company and they have a plant there in texas. I could have him snoop around and see if there are any openings, he is over the technolgy group here at tennessee eastman co. If there are any he might be able to pull some strings for you. Let me know if you would like me to look into it for you.

    Cheers,

Hey Mike that would be awesome. Shoot me an email at aaronfowler@houston.rr.com and I'll reply with my resume.

Dan, I'm trying for sales first. There was an install position available, I wanted to "try" for both but after the second interview you can only go forward towards one position. I chose sales. If that doesn't work out, then I'll try for the install position.

I still haven't heard anything. I was told that they will let me know either way, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the kind words everyone. :)

Are you sure you sent it to the address above? Try aaronfowler@houston.rr.com or phuz@txraves.org - both of them work AFAIK.

Thanks for the info and heads up! Once I get a job and place of my own I'll be back around here a bit more.

    Phuz,

I just read our company stock report and they mentioned opening 2 new stores in Austin. Check out http://www.ultimateelectronics.com/
The career listings seem to be down. If you’re looking for a great audio company to work for this is one of the best. Benefits and great commissioned salary (depending on local sales). You may want to just call the next closest dealer or headquarters and find out where and when the hiring will start. I was in the same skills boat you are and they snagged me up quickly. Be sure to pick the Austin location with the most potential i.e. new expensive homes with lots of Starbucks around.

    Good luck brotha

Just an update everyone. Over the last few weeks things went nuts and my phone almost blew up because I was getting so many calls. I ended up getting a job at HP way up on the north west side of town.

I'll be back around in full force once I get a place of my own and start buying/using my audio gear again. :)

Thanks for all of the help, etc.!

Glad to hear it brotha. About to worry that my cabs would be at the local pawn-o-matic before too long.

I'll be down Houston way 'for too much longer, with a bag full of goodies for ya.

Now GET to work, you lazy ****.
