Good for you dude. You will feel much better after day 3. After day 7, cigarettes will taste as nasty as they did the first time you tried one. Drink alot of water, and pick up some good books when the cravings happen--if you can keep your mind off of it for 2 minutes, the craving will pass.

From a smoker to you: GOOD LUCK. You can do it.

    +1

I'm hoping you were more of a habitual smoker as opposed to an actual 'have to smoke now' kind of guy. Much easier to quit and you realize that you only smoked because you had nothing else to do at that moment or created a habit of always getting a smoke when 1. you drink, 2. after a meal, 3. get upset/frustrated/angry, etc. the list goes on.

I smoked about a pack a day each tour I spent in Iraq, and in between months when I was back in the states. Well, 8 months later and I've maybe 1-2 cigs in that entire time frame. Keep in mind, unless you want to cough up some nasty stuff you couldn't believe you'd cough up.....then quit smoking. Hope I gave you a bad visual, quitting smoking is the best thing you can do.

Good for you, both for not driving while intoxicated and using the opportunity to quit. I quit two weeks ago and already spent $150 on a used AVR that had the features I had been looking for. So I took my reward a little early. Pay attention to the good things that happen to your body as you clear out the nicotine cravings. For me, I no longer hear myself wheezing as I go to sleep. I also wake up earlier. When nicotine cravings get too distracting to do anything else I go out in the living room and put on some music, sit back and close my eyes and just listen. I will often doze off for a few minutes this way and when I awake the cravings are gone. Being self employed I can goof off this way.

Keep it up and remember: Not Even One!!

I smoked for years and when the prices went up, I went cold turkey one day there after. I used Hersheys' miniatures to get thru the first month. Then I ate stakes (rib eyes) every week there after and also watched my saving GROW.

1200.00 a year saved easy. That's by old prices too.

    It's been 10 yrs now.

Doctors' #1 guide line... stop smoking if you do.

Best of luck goes out to you. Remember, the first three days are the toughest. After them, the 7 day mark. After that your body will take care of it needs by wanting FOOD :D.

    Enjoy the food...!!!

I tryed quiting 2 years ago and went a week and then had one thinking its just one . Before I knew it I was smoking again

I dont think I'm strong enough to cut down and I just gotta guit . I am going crazy right now for one but like tonym's approach I was just reading that people who dont go cold turky and use gum or patches etc.... end up smoking again

I like jimbo's post with taking your reward and buying the avr because you materialised somthing for your efforts and its inspiring to me that you have peace of mind after two weeks being clean and I will use it as my reference point

The cravings are horrible but I keep singing that song to myself " You wont say what the heck with a big hole in your neck .....you dont always die from tobacco "

I smoked 2 packs of Camels a day for 34 years. Quit in '92 and went out and the money I would have spent on Camels, I bought a '92 GMC Typhoon with the wife's blessing. Fun truck! Truck is long gone and I still haven't started the habit again. Nicotine is one of the hardest narcodics to give up but you can do it. One day at a time and before you know it another year goes buy with you clean.

Hold that thought; this is the horror story that your are releasing yourself from.

I can't say that I have achieved peace of mind from quitting or from anything else. I do believe that we all spend too much effort trying to rid ourselves of bad feelings like fear or anger. I have learned that it is better to simply acknowledge that I am having a bad feeling and know that it will go away after a while. Feelings are like the weather, they just come and go and meanwhile we just carry on. Nicotine cravings are just feelings and they come and go, also. Over time they will be much reduced, to the point where they are just an occasional insidious thought: "Gee, I would like a smoke now. No harm in just one."

    Now you know different.

Thanks for the opportunity to chat about quitting.

I will be 3 years smoke free in January. Went cold turkey and used the patch for the first two weeks after that it was a cake walk. The main this is that you have to really want to quit. If you really want to quit you can do it. Congrats on quitting.

I'm not an ex smoker, but I have tried/am trying to quit. All I can say is good for you, and good luck. I think the successful guys that have spoke up have it right. Take it one day at a time. If you fall off the wagon, don't give up just start over with more determination to make it longer this time.
    Again GOOD LUCK

One of the biggest hurdles when you're trying to quit is having friends that smoke. There's fewer and fewer now, but when you're hanging out and everyone gets up to go outside and somke, its really hard to resist the urge. On the bright side, at $8/day, in 6 months you could save $1440, and buy yourself a nice set of lsi towers . . . good luck quitting.

Keep telling yourself that, if you don't quit, you are going to die of lung cancer. Sounds morbid, but worked for me - I quit over 6 years ago cold turkey.

I quit back in September. I feel pretty good, but i always took care of myself during the time, too, so i never really experienced shortness of breath or anything.

Luckily, i was a habitual smoker, so it wasn't that bad for me.

Downside? It was cheaper for me to smoke. Because now, i just eat. Constantly. (I figured out why my appetite has been so ridiculous.)

But hey, it's healthier, and the GF loves not kissing an ashtray.

Hey, Buymesome , You do the right thing there, brother. It's a nasty and an expensive habit.

Believe me, you do not only intake the Nicotine into your blood stream but hundred of other dangerous chemical ingredients that tobacco companies added to the tobacco itself. Google it yourself to see these dangerous chemicals THEY use to preserve the tobacco, you will quit yourself and you will not need any more horror stories.

Do yourself a favor, break that habit. It ain't easy but it can be done and has been done sucessfully. Also, I would like to advise you do not take any substitute forms to quit such as Nicorettegums or any mild form of anti-depressant med ( forgot the name brand) that your MD. may recommend.

If you can not do it cold turkey, try to cut down 2 or 3 cigarettes a day untill your body adjusts to these chemical withdrawl and kiss it goodbye in bout 2 weeks.

    Good luck and God bless.

I did this many years ago. Stopped and never looked back. For me the cost was high not because I smoked much but because I supplied everyone else. At the time I calculated how much I would spend over the next year and treated myself to something nice. Now, every now and then when I want something I just get it, remembering all that money would have just gone up in smoke anyway.

I just calculated the savings for myself over the past 10 years. It was enough to buy my whole audio system!

It's more so a mental thing born out of habit, like after you eat,go out for drinks, etc. Steer clear of those that smoke, chew gum after dinner, but keep your brain busy, your body's natural craving for the nicotine will only last a few days, after that it's all mental.
    Stay strong.

Best of luck to you bro!

What I love to read is that so many people put the blame on their addiction to cigs and the companies, or the fact they got cancer from years of smoking. Sorry, but it's no ones fault but your own, 100%, no one else's. Accept the fact you picked up the cig and smoked it.

Well said Ron. I have had many addiction issues including cigarettes (12 years or so quit smoking and over 20 for drugs) and not once did the smokes or the crack pipe jump off the table into my mouth. Every single time I picked up and lit up or dropped or snorted. It was never the smokes or the drugs.....it was always me.

That said, hang on man you CAN do it. I quit them all cold turkey. No patches no drugs no hypnosis. It's friggin' hard but it WILL get better. I haven't had a craving of any kind in many years. I LOVE being a non-smoker and so will you. May the force and your will be with you.

A serious thanks for posting this. The money is one thing, and health is important of course, but what is really driving me to get us both to quit, is the fact that these things are like a buck a pack. The rest is extortion of those addicted. I'm done with it, --Jan 1st.
