Will this work? (Lsi9 Help)

So I'm pushing a pair of Lsi9s with a Marantz SR5003 receiver. I know this is not an optimal setup with the Lsis being 4 ohms and the receiver being safe only to 6, I believe. I'm looking into an external amp but then I got a new idea. Instead of an amp, could I just get a powered sub and put the speaker setting on small? The lowest impedance is around the 50Hz region. Would excluding the lower frequencies save my receiver from blowing when I play movies blarringly loud?

You're still playing the speakers off your receiver, adding a powered sub just fills in the low-end department but doesn't mean you can drive your LSi's to a higher volume.
Personally, I'd still get an external amp. You do listen to music in 2-channel right? That amp will help you in every way for both HT and 2-channel listening.

It'll help, not sure how much.
But your first step should be powering those LSi9s correctly rather than worry about a sub.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Your crossover setting is a slope, not a cliff. Even if you set the crossover at 100hz, it will still be getting 50hz signals, just at a lower volume level.
I am sure it will help, but if you plan to listen at decent levels, an amp is really what you want to invest in. You can try it, but there is no way we can tell you if it will work or not. (and I am sure some movies will cause more problems than others - just depends on the volume and frequencies that are needed to be reproduced.)

Thank for the valuable input guys! For the amp, I was looking at an Emotiva UPA-2 or XPA-2. The price point looks good along with the rated wattage. I also love the appearance. Any other suggestions as far as 2 channel amps go would be great!
Once again, Thanks a lot! -

That'll give you PLENTY to work with to at least start out right.
You open to used stuff? In that price, you're looking at big nasty Adcoms, Carvers, maybe Rotel, Hafler, etc etc etc...
Tons of possibilities in that price range. I'll bow out from here, as my only experience with "high power" 2-channel amps come with the XPA-2, and i can only speak for how it sounded on my gear, which will probably be radically different from what you've got.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

How do you like the XPA-2? And do you know if I can find one used anywhere? -

I didn't like it. YMMV, of course. It didn't play nice with my gear. It was harsh, too forward for my tastes, and bright. Your ears are probably different, and your gear is probably MUCH different from mine. I won't say it's a bad product.
I think there's a used one on Audiogon right now, but i think it's still going for almost $600.
The 'Gon or Ebay is where they usually show up. Or try the Emotiva forums.
If you REALLY want to try one, i'd get one direct from emotiva on the 30 day trial. You'd have to pay shipping back if you don't like it, which sucks, because it's built like a concrete block, but it's relatively risk free.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

You've crapped on enough amp threads with your Emo love so you should know what other amp suggestions are out there.
You have an obvious love for Emo gear because of the way you ravenously defend it at every turn in almost every amp thread, even if it's off topic. So I'd think that's what you should purchase. It's time to put your money where your mouth is!
I think I just saw a XPA 2 on Audiogon, not sure if it's still available.

Or I can recommend getting a modified Moscode 300, the stock 300's will fit your wallet but a Stephen Sank modified one (if you can EVER find one) will take care of you for plenty of years to come but that'll run you a good grand +. It'll also have lots of room so you can put 100 bright-blue LEDs if you start having withdrawals....just to give you the impression that you have an EMO amp in your room, but the amount of current this thing provides will make you long forget that brand ever existed.
You know that the 600 had enough current that it powered a blender? Fun fact for ya!Truck setup

I appreciate the link but my idea of helpfulness is not shooting someone down and then offering a hand. I'm not sure what that's called.
But as far as me defending Emotiva amps in "almost every" amp thread, "even if its off topic", I would love for you to back up this claim.
Unless I post messages in my sleep, the only other thread I've even talked about Emotiva amps in was a thread discussion "best bang for the buck components" in which I stated a lot of people enjoy Emotiva products. For its power rating to price ratio, it is a pretty good bang for the buck product. Was that off topic? Was my own thread discussion what amp I want to purchase off topic too? -
I am so laughing my **** off right now.
Cpyder, I think you post this crap for kicks. You certainly offer plenty of opinion about amplification and what is "good" on the forum. I think buying Emotiva is an awesome idea. Let us know what you think.-Kevin

Heiney9 - How fast you run when someone calls you out on your crap. Do you just post to hear yourself talk? Here's another example of you just saying foolish BS:
On 1-23-2006Fluance are those really crappy white van speakers. Stay as far away from those as possible. Absoulte $h*t. All the on-line reviews are bogus. I've heard cheap boom-box's that sound better.
On 3-11-2009White Van speakers.........totally *crap*.
On 3-12-2009Not really. I've known someone who got duped into buying some pieces and it's white van stuff. Granted I haven't heard it myself, but there are dozens of companies like this all over e-bay and it's really low quality stuff, CRAP
...
Just to name a few others that are white van speakers the same as FLUANCE. It's junk!!!
H9
So in 2006, you heard Fluance speakers and they sounded like a cheap boom box, but then in 2009 you claim you've never heard the speakers. Hmmm... I guess I'll have to say I'm a little confused by the ability to un-hear something.
Finding these ignorant words of yours took me less than 2 minutes. Imagine what other fictitious claims one might find if they searched through your clutter of misguided posts. -

That's subjective, don't look at power ratings alone. It's best to get your ears on such things with your own gear if and whenever possible imo.Truck setup

I'm using a Moscode 300 Hybrid amp thats partially modified. Its an extremely high-current amplifier and supports crazy 1 or 2ohm loads. It's meant more for electro-static/planar speakers since they're the hardest to drive, so LSi's would be a walk in the park.Truck setup

FYI, LSi9's dip down to 2ohms, so your receiver is not doing them any justice. Setting them to small won't help either, since the dip is higher in the frequency spectrum."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking I need a separate amp sooner than later, right?
