    Dan:
I got a chance to play with the ERC-1 before it went off to a reviewer. For $399 it's one hell of a fine sounding player. The icing on the cake is the remote. You just don't find such a fine quality control anywhere near the price. read the review in the Oct. issue of A$$A.

If you're open to used gear, there's much better value out there.... but that's just my personal opinion.

I was on the review chain. And it wasn't horrible, i guess.

Definitely can't fault the build quality and the beefy remote, though.

Im going to use it as a Transport most of the time. I take it from your
comments that it didnt Wow you. How was the sound(bright-smooth)?
Is it comparable to say a Rotel 1072?

I haven't heard a Rotel 1072, but from what i've heard about it, i would imagine the Rotel would stomp it.

    It definitely didn't wow me.

I directly compared it against a Pioneer DV50A (563A) and an Oppo 981HD, on both my system, and Nikolas812's. It wasn't worth $275 more than the Oppo, or $350 more than my Pio. (Personally, i even thought the Pioneer sounded better.)

It was bright, strident even. And even on my extremely warm system, gave me my very first taste of sibilance on my rig.

The plus side? It was VERY detailed, and the imaging was pretty decent. But from what i heard, that sucker would NEED tubes to make it listenable to my ears.

YMMV of course. They DO have a 30 day return policy, i'd say give it a try if you can afford it, your ears may like it. :)

    (EDIT)

Oh hell, you're not far from me... Grab it, then we can get together and try it against all kinds of stuff! :D

No i don't own one but you are claiming that it "sound's" harsh, how did you come to this conclusion ~ 3hrs after your initial post? Were you fortunate enough to have someone local give you a listen? I'm just curious is all :o

What he's saying is that from my description, it sounds like a harsh cdp.

And frankly, it is. The only thing in my arsenal that i could find that was harsher on the ears was my POS 300CD changer made by Sony.

I have EXTREMELY warm speakers, run all matched Sidewinder interconnects, a B&K preamp (warm) and my onkyo cdp (warm) and the addition of this CDP with nothing else immediately turned my system into glass shards into the eardrums at higher volumes.

Like i said earlier if it was a multi player and not just a CD/HDCD/MP3 i'd snatch one up, i'll stick with my HTPC for the time being :o

I personally had my ears on it too, with different gear (more on the neutral side IMO) and came to a different conclusion. You have no dog in this hunt, so why are you telling this guy he has no clue, or even getting involved?

    Yeah, you don't remember correctly.

    And again. Learn to English.

He was saying that the Emotiva SOUNDS harsh. As in, by description, it sounds LIKE IT WOULD BE a "harsh" unit. Never once did he pass judgement on the player.

Hell, even on my setup, it may have sounded great to someone else, but i also like a very warm sound. :p

So... as usual, ymmv, just my ears' opinion.

I won't say it's a BAD player, because it certainly isn't. Just not anything that i'm personally interested in. I know that most people in the demo liked it, so far. ;)

Yes Dan, the only way you'll know, is to hear one. Those of us in the demo have agreed not to spill the beans on the open forum, until the demo is complete, but shoot me a pm, and I'll be happy to tell you what I heard.

Yes Dan, the only way you'll know, is to hear one. Those of us in the demo have agreed not to spill the beans on the open forum, until the demo is complete, but shoot me a pm, and I'll be happy to tell you what I heard.

    Thanks alot............pm sent

I'm very curious as to what all the members of the demo group have to say. I was able to hear the ERC-1 for two evenings for about 90 minutes each. I was playing it through a Vista Audio integrated tube amp into my Eficion speakers.

The whole idea of reviews is to give the reader some basic sense, but until one hears gear in their own system they won't truly know. System synergy is a HUGE component of a fine sounding system. That is why most reviewers have a stable of gear to work with in order to be as fair as possible.

Mark, as you may or may not know, the demo participants have agreed to hold off with their thoughts (publicly) until the demo is complete. It should be wrapping up here in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. I think most of us are willing to spill the beans via PM though....;)

Looks like ths Player is Ok to good, but not a Giant Killer. I will have to get
my ears on one. I too prefer the smooth-musical sound to a very detailed
sound.Thats the great thing about this Hobby-Whats great sounding to
    one is Terrible to another;)

This sums it up pretty good, I also was in the demo loop and have my opinion. But from the small hints of others I have seen it looks like your statement above will be close to what we will see when everyone has had there time with it. Some will love it, others will yawn at it, and others would not have it on there rack for free. The 30 day return makes it easy to hear if it fits your ears and rig.
