I'm glad I didn't hear about this yesterday. There was probably some real news happening yesterday that didn't get covered.

Yeah, like a week long 24/7 coverage of MJ's death? The news is ALL crap nowadays. "News" would be stuff that matters. Today's networks only show things to get as many dumbass eyeballs glued to the screen, no matter how ridiculous the "story" is.

That's why I stopped watching the news and started reading it online.
It's still sensationalized, but I don't have some generic ken/barbie idiot screaming at me telling me how important it is that I pay attention to this breaking story that has the nation's attention and then covering the same 10 seconds of video over and over.

I come to CP for my news... I get to hear about idiots on balloons (or not), and recalls and ****.

I love how mad people get at the news - get mad at the people who watch and demand this crap, not the news stations for giving it to them. Networks are a business, and they have a responsibility to their shareholders and owners to do whatever they can legally do to make as much money as possible, and if that means 24/7 MJ coverage or staring at an empty weather balloon that MIGHT have some kid in it for 5 hours... that's what we get.

You want something different? Demand coverage of the stories you want, and don't watch when stories like this are on. As long as thsi stuff draws in viewers it ain't going away, no matter how much people **** and whine about it.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I don't get mad at the news. I just don't watch it. I do get mad at my in-laws who are glued to this kinda crap whenever we visit them. Or, when they visit us, they are constantly trying to tune into FoxNews.

I pretty much get my national news from NPR and only watch local news for weather/traffic.

I agree to an extent, but the anchors/commentators all seem to be as dumb as those who'll halt their lives and glue themselves to a TV over something like this. There is no skepticism and the coverage is always more dramatic than it ever ends up being in the end.

They won't show pictures and video of REAL news tragedy, like 9/11, but they'll air **** like this.

Nobody wants a 6 year old boy to be hurt, but in the grand scheme of things this whole thing just doesn't matter to anyone but the authorities and his loved ones. How many kids died in a hospital bed of cancer over this three hour hoax? What, nobody wants to hear about that? It's not entertaining enough?

Half of the reason people watched this was because of they thought not only could the boy be in this contraption, but that he may have fallen to his death, too. Kind of sick.

Nobody is talking about the kid being OK now, they're talking about how whacky that family is. If we ignored this kind of stuff as a nation less people would pull these kinds of stunts.

you guys just don't get it... news shows stuff like this because it's compelling stuff.. tell me you weren't talking about it with your co workers and certainly in here about it yesterday as it was unfolding. and even today you are still talking about it. if it's NOT news then why are YOU still talking about it???

THis had to potential to be like that 1987 incident in Texas where baby Jessica fell down a well and got trapped.. the ENTIRE world stopped and the news brought that event into our homes. it captivated the world. it would not have been the same yesterday to read it online or in the newspapers a day later..

True news has changed to become more sensationalized in the past 5 years or so... but trust me.. news managers are only responding to what you the viewers are interested in. it's called ratings.. and people just like you fill out diaries that log what show you watch and when and how often. most people still get their main news source from TV. followed by the internet then newspapers (which are dying more everyday).

if you don't like the news then you don't have to. but when all your friends are talking about what happen with the balloon boy the next day and all you got to see is text or still pics when everyone else saw moving video.. don't effin complain. ;)

Anyone with at least two brain cells should have realized that that flaccid, partially inflated balloon couldn't possibly generate enough lift to take the weight of that child airborne.....ever! If any doubt remained, just observing the motion of the balloon in flight revealed that there was no significant ballast (weight) aboard. That A'Hole should pay for the "rescue" attempts, and the "rescuers" should be reprimanded for being so gullible in the first place!SHEESH:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I was only able to see what I could on the net as I am to busy here at the shop. When I got home I watched the news just to see what had happened (i very very seldom watch the news as i hate it). Everybody was talking about it at work cause of the news on the radio.

I hope the goes broke with this B/S stunt.

Didn't talk to anyone yesterday regarding this 'balloon boy' and definitely didn't 'stop' to take notice of Jessica in 1987. There is much more compelling stuff that happens each and every day around the world, but most of it doesn't get media attention.

I heard a lot of damage was done to the wheat farm where it landed because of all the people driving and running around on it. There is supposed to be an investigation of the father as to whether or not it was a publicity stunt. This is all from a local radio station so who knows. They had some guy on who said he used to storm chase with the father. He said they had a dispute about bringing the kids with them to the more dangerous storms and so they no longer worked together. Can you imagine bringing 5 and 6 year old kids on a dangerous activity like that, if its true?

Well , I say the father outta be tied to the damn ballon & fill er up & let it sail... maybe a few power wires or ppl taking a few shots with a rifle at him while in flight would settle his arse down ..:D:D

But I agree with gdb -- wasn't enough helium in that balloon to lift even a 6 yr old

I have almost exactly the same problem with my own family. My dad recently told me, and I quote, "Son, if you want to know what is REALLY going on in the world, you need to turn on Fox News".

i will never learn to imbed youtube for some damn reason. anyway, search "ballon boy" on youtube and see all the crap it drudges up about this whacko-**** family.

    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=balloon+boy&search_type=&aq=f

and i was watching the today show before work this morn and i even missed the kid throwing up during the interview. pops prolly drugged his kid up to keep him calm through the interview, only in the end to make him puke.

seriously, if you had seen him on the wife swap show you'd wanna punch the guy square in the face. i know i did. and i guess this fam was on the show TWICE, as the american public must not have gotten enough of a fix the first episode.

for some reason the more i think about this publicity stunt, the more i get angry. anything for a cheap thrill i suppose. at the expense of many "truely" caring individuals and families who sent out prayers and what not for this guy and his family. now excuse me while i go puke like balloon boy did during the interview this morn.
