    Hello again...

I got my free Win 7 upgrade disc today, thought that was pretty quick of them. Anyway, I got the "coupon" when I bought Vista 64.

As you can see, it looks like its okay to do a clean install with the upgrade disc. I just had some questions for anyone thats done it this way...

When you boot from the upgrade disc is there options in the menu to do a format and a clean install? Does it "see" a previous copy on the hard drive or does it ask for the Vista disc to verify? The copy of Vista 64 I have on the machine right now is an OEM version, not the full retail copy....

Just getting my ducks in a row before I take off on it...

I'm back, well I went ahead and did the install. It acted just like a normal boot to the disc install. Everything is back up and running just fine. Will report back more after messing around with it a little more....

Well I found one bummer so far. You can't back up, using the Win 7 back up, to a network share, such as my NAS box....

Heres the direct quote from the help and support file:

You can only save your backups on a network location on Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, and Windows 7 Enterprise.

    Not too happy about that....

So I take it you have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 then?
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Can someone help me out here.

I own a previous version of Windows, Vista. However I want to do a clean install with the Windows 7 upgrade disc on a new hard drive on a system that does not have Vista installed.

I assume that since this is an upgrade version, I'm going to have to prove somehow that I own the version of Vista that I have. The question is, how does this work if I don't have the OS installed? Can I plug in the license number from Vista, or do I actually have to install Vista then install Windows 7?

I keep hearing that the upgrade dis doesn't require the previous operating system to be installed, but that can't be right or else it would just be the full retail disc...

I have yet to do this in a Vista -->Win7 upgrade so... grain of salt.

If you have the install media for "any" previous version, get that handy.

Start the install and when it complains about not finding a previous version, point it to the install media for your previous version. That has always worked in the past. Not sure with win7 but it's worth a try.

Sorry I can't be more certain.

everything I've read says something along the lines of this:

    1. install from the upgrade disk, however, when you get to the prompt for your new Key, skip that step, and a trial-type install will occur with a time limit (30 days or something like that).
    2. re-install from the upgrade disk, now that you have an OS on the drive.

haven't done it myself, I'm sure someone here knows for sure.

Yeah that defeats the purpose of what i'm trying to do. I'm not trying to screw MS out of the retail price by using the upgrade when I don't own a previous OS.

I have the OS, I just don't want to go through the trouble of installing two times.

I found a workaround that includes your first step, but then running a tool to then activate afterwards, but that's apparently illegal, even though I do own vista.

Again, I am unclear. Does it have to be an activated copy? Can't you just use the install disk of an upgrade-eligible OS as proof as with former versions? No need to install the former OS, just present the install DVD/CD when asked.
    Am I wrong?

You can google it yourself, but I remember that being a method that MS itself condoned. They are well aware of the "loophole". Just think about how easy it would be for them to close it if they wanted to.

Besides, since you DO own a previous copy, how are you **** MS?

I found a method that appears to be legal according to Microsoft, as long as you DO own a previous OS legally.

First, the idea of just putting in the install CD of an older OS doesn't work, and I don't think it's worked since Windows XP, so that's out.

Second, as mentioned the mothod below has been confirmed by Microsoft to be LEGAL, as long as you own a full copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. The method can logistically be used regardless of what you own, but can only be used legally if you own a previous OS.

I do not condone software pirating, and do own a full copy of both Windows Vista AND Windows XP, both full retail copies. So I'm relaying the information below on the assumption that it will be used appropriately.

Thanks for the update. I have to admit that I have not installed Vista more that 10 times and always from the boxes' owner's copy. I do an assload of end user support as a side business and almost exclusively, my customers had me downgrade to XP so I was unaware that the install upgrade-check had changed. :o

I'm running regular 32 bit XP with 6 gigs of ram, i7 920, etc... It should be a nice difference once I can get 64 bit Win7 to work.

You dont even know. Im running a Quad AMD and 4 Gigs and was running XP 32 for a month until the 64 RC came out and that was night and day, now i have Ultimate and got all updated drivers and running even better. I am very pleased with this ver. Best yet IMO. Im from the DOS, pkzip, Pascal, C:, 3.1 etc days....

You ain't kidding! I upgraded to a solid state drive and Win7x64 tonight, I can't believe the difference!

The only issue I'm having so far is that my fan controller isn't compatable, so the PC is a little loud at the moment. Otherwise, no issues so far.

What was the difference? Windows 7? or the solid state? I really want to know, serious.

    Almost done?

It should only take a few minutes.
