I wasn't able to do a clean install. It wouldn't allow me to select any drive other than my C: drive. With all drives other than my new drive it wouldn't work either.

I gave the drive and install disk to my brother for him to give it a try in his rig.

I just installed the 7 RC doing fresh install 3 months ago and obtained 7 Ultimate last week. I tried just to "upgrade" but said i couldnt from the RC copy which i think is bs cuz i had everything installed along with all updated drivers and had to do it all over again. Just think its silly i couldnt just run the upgrade and just update new files. Maybe even option just to key in Retail serial number to 7 RC and it run an update and unlock it.

Oh well, It was all well worth it. W7 is running like a champ.

This is very good to know!

I want to switch to W7 on my new laptop immediately when the Upgrade disks ship, but I am a firm believer that Windows upgrades do not work as well as clean installs. At least that is my experience in the past.

    Cannot wait now!

I hope to do a clean install on the machine I have XP on which is stronger and faster then the one with Vista. I guess I'll know later.

I can say my wifes laptop which had Vista once, loves Win 7 and is faster. Her hard drive died and when replaced I just install Win 7 on it, since she hated Vista.

I'm running regular 32 bit XP with 6 gigs of ram, i7 920, etc... It should be a nice difference once I can get 64 bit Win7 to work.

I hope you realize you are only using 3 GB of that memory right now. That's all that 32bit Windows can use. In that case, you will see a significant improvement when you go to a 64bit system. In heavy apps and multitasking you will see quicker performance due to the lack of writing swap files.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Yes, I built the system in mind for 64 bit Win7. IIRC, there should also be a big jump in processing power.

Win7 Ultimate x64, RC, for a few months.
I had no problem doing a fresh install to the partition that I chose. I partitioned using Gparted, then wrote to zero, then popped in the disk. 40 minutes later, all set.
You can plug in a new key, so I'll give that a try when the version is released.
It's time for a new laptop, but if not, I may pay retail for this one. I can't recall ever having done that before. . :D You can see how well it plays on this older (2 year) laptop.

I have an extra key, although it will turn into a pumpkin sometime in March 2010, at which time you'd have to plug in a retail or OEM one.
If AsSiMiLaTeD want's it, that's cool.

will you be able to upgrade from XP to win7? Also, if my laptop has been having issues, will upgrading to win7 eliminate that if theyre software issues?

If doing a fresh install, I don't see why not. It may need to be 32bit and not 64bit, my laptop would take 32bit, but I was able to install 64bit on my wifes laptop. As far as software issues, YES a fresh install of anything fixes all problems IMHO. ;)

    No.

Put it to you like this. I have a buddy at MS and he can get me (consumer) software at his cost. Last week, the retail stuff was unavailable to him. RTM is of course out, but unavailable to consumers (and MS Store). Release date is Oct. 22. Period. Anything else is illegal or a scam.

excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are your options? Fresh install as opposed to what?

Like, you pop the CD in, prompt comes up asking you about what type of install you would like, what would the option for a fresh install say so I know what to choose?

If its an upgrade I doubt whether there would be any options, not sure how they are going to handle it though. Usually in a fresh install you boot from the cd and take the install from there....

No not necessarily, its just the best way to do it, fresh install as opposed to an upgrade. And no sounds like you don't have to buy the retail non-upgrade version, just as long as you have a previous copy of Vista or XP.

Before when would do an upgrade it would need some sort of validation or it could see a previous version. Like I said I don't know how they are going to handle that now...

You gonna want to backup ALL of your **** before hand if doing an upgrade regardless as Windows will not preserve your files and if you are upgrading from XP and its a ****. Better off booting from CD, formatting partition and doing a fresh install. Its less complex than doing the actual upgrade and takes up less time. I did mine and my sons in one night.
