So... the discourse above begs the question... how do youse guys feel about Five Guys burgers?

Excellent!!! I just tried them for the first time a few weeks ago. Didn't know they existed until then. We were dropping our son at U.C. and there's one 1/2 a block from his dorm.

I was just there this weekend. Sometimes I make an excuse to have to go to Indy just to stop in there and grab a burger.

Dammit John. Tell me next time you're going to be around. I'll buy you a beer or five.

There's a 5 Guys in Westminster, MD (where our son goes to school) and in Shelby,NC (where my father lives). I just learned last night that there are a few in southern MA (not too close to me, but closer than the aforementioned locales).

I like their burgers and their fries (unfortunately)...

There is one on the ground floor of the building I work in. Bad news for my diet!

But Five Guys, they must dust their burgers with crack or something. They are insanely bad for you but soooooooo good in your tummy! The hot dogs ain't bad either.

That and for all you people who ain't never done been to Atlantic City and gotten yourself some boardwalk fries, the fries that Five Guys makes is about as close as it gets without actually being from Atlantic City.

I associate the boardwalk french fries experience with Ocean City, MD, but that's just my history. Gotta put some malt vinegar on 'em, for best results.

Exactly, if the discussion goes the right way, I see it more as an economic thread than a political thread. Loyalty to the employees has been long gone as this is not exactly feasable when dealing with a global economy. Automation is in fact one way if not the only way for America to deal with the fierce competition of global market. There is no way for any American countries to compete with wages for employees in countries like China our only way out is efficiency of dropping costs through the best technology possible.

Another possiblity is that the price of oil will continue to increase. It was $4 a gallon a while ago. If the price continues to increaase and I see no reason why it won't, then it will become more expensive for China or India to ship and sell low priced goods in the US. There is only so much oil on the earth that can be used and as it becomes less avaible the cost will increase. Progress/growth in any country requires lots of cheap oil or some other cheap energy sourse.

Of course the price of air travel and many others items will increase also.

There will be chages in the future.

Increasing the price of fuel might kill Norht American business more than theirs. It would take some very substantial fuel increase to take care of the huge offset between their labor costs an our North American costs. Dropping costs by means of best technologies also means technologies that will move us away from fuel dependency and that of course works both ways.

    Cheers!

The conversion is good for the environment but not for the economy. Filling up at the burger joint maybe good for the economy but not good for the environment since you wind-up overweight therefore your car consume more to carry you around and your own foot print on the environment is higher... Bigger and larger are your dumps and therefore the more you pollute :p

I'm going to eat and then pollute. It's my OTHER hobby.

The eating part. Not the polluting. Although every once in awhile you get a REALLY good polluting session and it's amazing.

As for burgers and fries, having just read Fast Food Nation, the idea of eating from any fast food joint won't be appealing to me for quite some time, though I'm sure In-N-Out's practices are better than most.

There aren't any around here. Cincinnati could use a good, solid burger or hotdog joint. We have Cincinnati-chili on every corner (which is weird the first time you have it, but strangely addicting) but if you want a good burger, you have to go to some stuffy upper-middle-class environment and pay out the nose for it... Which I don't do.

There's a Five Guys by U.C. in Calhoun St, You have to go try it.

Yes. This has been bothering me too, ever since this thread started. Let's get it right.

    Firtsly, it's In-N-Out Burger: http://www.in-n-out.com/history.asp

In and out = phornication, debauchery, generalized sodomy in the streets and the end of civilization as we know it.

In-N-Out = Blue state burgers, President Obama, and the great void of space.

Phornication burgers = happiness and everlasting bliss for Americans everywhere.
