I was just going to post this as soon as I saw the title. Glad I don't have to now.

    What he said! a JOKE

Just in case you have not heard....

Genesis, ABBA, the Hollies, the Stooges and Jimmy Cliff have made the cut and will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Non performers who will be inducted in 2010 are David Geffen, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell. Composers like Mann, Weil, and Blackwell are just getting inducted now?

Possible live performance by Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett? All 4 members of ABBA appearing together?

...then why the hell is Rush being dissed yet again! They are right up there with Kiss in terms of Gold and Platinum records. The whole process of how they decide who gets in seems ridiculous to me. Then again, I am a Rush fanatic and very biased.

No ****!!! Another year and they get passed over again...what a crock!!
    Let's look at their stats:

    Year active: 1968-present: 41 years!
    24 gold records
14 platinum records (3 of which have gone multiplatinum),
placing them within the top 4 for the most consecutive gold albums by a rock band.
Rush ranks 78th in U.S. album sales according to the RIAA with sales of 25 million units.
Total worldwide sales approximate 40 million units

Kiss' music was never meant to be taken seriously, it was about having fun and raising hell. They have built one helluva dynasty doing just that. Iron Maiden still does it for me!

Unbelievable that bands like Yes and Rush are not in 20 years ago. Good on Genesis though, that was overdue by at least 25 years.

To me this sums up their music quite well.

However, I do have to admit that I enjoy the odd radio song when I hear it.

There's nothing I enjoy more than jamming Rush "Circumstances" (Hemispheres album) at about 110dB, while I guzzle an ice cold brew.

In my opinion the only worthy names I see are Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges, maybe Genesis..the rest can be written off as commercialized wannabe's. Kiss was merely a sideshow act who tried to play music, their writing sucked even more than the playing...at least Ace had "some" talent as a guitarist.

No need to take offense, it is merely my opinion. I should mention the way my opinion is formed, I am partners in a company that designs and builds analog studio recording gear used by many artists world wide, my family is full of professional musicians, I have co-founded non-profits to help musicians with health/addiction issues, have played in bands since age 12, produced records with Grammy award winning artists whom are widely respected as some of the best in the industry at their craft and consider among my friends many who make their living in the music biz.....meaning I know how the industry works and sometimes why it does not. Miley Sirus has also sold millions of records...as did Milli Vanilli, but I hardly feel they will ever deserve a place in the Hall. There are numerous "artists" who rely on writers, autotune, and studio musicians, backing tracks, lipsyncing, misogyny, big butts, pretty faces ect....they have little artistic integrity but do have great marketing teams and gimmicks. The fact is KISS was far better at the marketing game than they were at music, I remember the lunchboxes, figurines, trading cards, posters, t-shirts and the whole KISS Army fan club...they were pioneers at the music marketing game. In my humble opinion those being considered for the R/R Hall should have some inkling of artistic integrity and a catalog that has made an influential mark on music as a whole E.G. Dylan, Bob Marley, The Stones, Beatles, The Yardbirds, Clapton, Muddy Waters, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson (w/o him there would be no Zeppelin). Do I agree with the R/R Hall of Fame 100%....hell no! A good friend of mine used to be heavily involved with the Hall, he took a lesser roll due to the politics, he has written most every book out there on Springsteen and his wife co-manages the Boss, he also wrote for Rolling Stone and co-founded Creem Magazine...he and I have disagreed on many things music related but he is a much higher paid rock critic than I will ever be, fact is we are both entitled to our opinions and it promotes taking a closer look at the history of the industry and the trends...healthy discussion. I am a qualified Grammy voter but would not piss on a Grammy if it were on fire at my feet as I find the whole Academy to be a joke...politics has a lot to do with it. Fact is as someone who makes a living at the music thing I tend to be protective of the integrity of the industry, in todays world the digital trends and drive-thru pop tarts are hell bent on ruining it...for me to do or say nothing is to bastardize the way I make a living.

Consider Robert Johnson, he sold very few records in his day, in fact black musicians were not allowed in recording studios or many other places...yet the influence and legacy he left was enormous...he died a poor man by most standards but he gave us and modern music a body of work that has stood the test of time.... had something to say and spoke to the everyman in all of us and the bands he influenced have passed that influence on to later generations. He had no marketing machine, no lunchboxes, no army nor hype to garner him legions of fans or millions of dollars, he had an old guitar and the truth.

Bottom line is I like oranges, some prefer apples...nobody is wrong just different. I personally think KISS was an awful band, but I can appreciate their business prowess if nothing else. AsI mentioned above, I don't rate a bands place in the historical pecking order on business prowess or even record sales, it is their body of work or their artistic contribution as a whole.
    Don't poke the bear......

Very well put. I understand your point fully. I guess I am looking at it from Kiss being a marketing success story, you know, 4 guys who had nothing etc etc....Fact is, I do not own a single Kiss album or CD, however I do believe they are an American institution, a household name and for what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is, they belong, as do Rush and many of the other bands mentioned here. Just my .02. For the record, I wasnt taking offense to anybodys opinion of the band, just trying to get my opinion across.
