Sub for music w/LSI series

I recently picked up some LSI15's from vmaxer that Ben had modded for Jerry.
I also grabbed a lsiC and some Lsi7's for surrounds.
I'm running them on a Rotel RSP-1068 with a RMB-1095 amp and the 1072 cd player.
Right now i have a Klipsch RW-10D sub and it's ok but not enough really.
I want to get a good musical sub but that could do decently well in HT as well.
This rig is mainly music about 70/30 split but some movies do get watched on it.

What are some subs you would consider and maybe a little on the goods vs bads with em.
I wanna try to keep the price under 900-1000 and new or used does not bother me.

With that setup which I have owned everything you are using , If I had to do it all again I would go with the Martin Logan Depth. All of Martin Logan subs are musical and do Home theater very well. It's very difficult to find a sub that can double duty. Martian Logan is your first choice.
The Grotto and Dynamo are excellent subs for the money but the magic happens at the Depth.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time.

I was just looking at that one. The descent seems a little out my price range atm. 2k plus just can't be swung right now.
I could however get Two of the Dynamo pretty easy or a single Grotto?
With the Grotto i could run a single for now and later grab a second and still be under the Descent price range by a decent amount. I'm sure it's worth the price tag but i'd be waiting 3-4 months before i could even get one heh.

Single Grotto or duel Dynamo's? Are even another type to look into, i'm open to ideas.

Also consider Velodyne SPL series 1200s.

I've seen people here criticize Velos, but they never specify which models they've heard. Velodyne makes many different subs for different applications. The SPL series is sealed and is probably the most musical. I got my spl 1200R for $900 at audioadvisor when they were on clearance.

Whatever you decide I would strongly recommend getting a sub with a remote. With those Lsi 15s, you may not always want the sub on.

I'll take a look at em. I see alot of people running the Epik and SVS subs are they not good for music? Just HT?

As for the sub with a remote it's not 100%needed as i can press the 2channel button a second time on the Rotel remote and it turns off the sub for me. Nice feature for sure.

I never use a sub for music with LSi15s since I rarely listen to rap, or any other overly excessive bass oriented music. I have a Polk PSW1000 sub that integrates wells with the LSi series.

On the contrary, I've read that some people like Epik and SVS. Once again, the specific models and designs cannot be ignored. A sub may shake the house but not have very tight bass.

As for the sub remote, it can be handy for volume control. Also, I have Velo connected at the line level using Y cables from my AVR. I prefer this set-up for music because the sub remains engaged in "pure audio" mode. So the Rotel trick would not work in my case. However, my set-up it forces you to run the L/R mains at full range. Not every one will want to do that, but I would think the Lsi15s sh/could be run full range with lgood SQ.

I would almost try another RW-10D and run duals.

Unless you're in a pretty large room, i'm surprised that you feel that it "isn't enough."

What's lacking about it? It's a pretty capable sub. Not really on the same page as the Depth, but it's not a bad performer by any means.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Well it does fine at lower volume levels. But if i turn it up a good bit which i do often i can turn the sub on/off and it's barely noticeable compared to just e lsi15's.
That and the port cuffing is fairly annoying here lately. It never bothered me before i got the new setup but now it really distracts from the music.

Single Grotto or duel Dynamo's? Are even another type to look into, i'm open to ideas.

I am using a ML Abyss with a pair of LSI9's and its works fantastic for music. It also has addtional line inputs that the dynamo does not that would be useful to run with your 15's. Not to mention that its larger and runs deeper than the dynamo without being much bigger.

I think your placement might be wonky. I've never noticed port noise unless i was doing freq sweeps. Now, keep in mind i don't have LSi15s, but i did have it paired up with some RT2000Ps at one point, and it had no problems keeping up at all volume levels. It's VERY sensitive to placement, though, and it just may not be possible to get it in an ideal location in your case.

I can ramp it up until the lights in the house are dimming, and it still sounds as good as ever.

But hey, as you say... i love upgrades, too. :D

Dynamos won't be much of an upgrade. Mmadden28 tried the Dynamo vs. the RW-10D awhile back, and the RW-10D was the winner for him. I bought the RW-10D, then auditioned a Dynamo myself for awhile, and i came to the same conclusion. We could both always place WHERE the dynamo was, but the RW-10D disappeared when placement was figured out. I'm a firm believer that the sub shouldn't be directional, i shouldn't have any idea where it is.

I have not had the directional issues with the abyss, so as a budget option it might be worth a look imho. I would love to make the jump to a grotto if the funding was available.

The sub is in the same location it was before BUT i was running it with a pair of RTIa5's. Now that i went to the lsi15's it doesn't help as much as it used to. I also never noticed the port noise until the lsi upgrade.
It's bad enough that i took a small blanket/throw and wrapped it up tight and have it stuffed in/against the port to stop the unwanted noise.

I would highly recommend outlaw audio. They deliver awesome performance for the price. They have a new sub that is designed has a quick response for it's size, good for both music and movies. They are rare to come buy but still a great price if purchased from their website. www.outlawaudio.com

I tend to like heavy bass with almost anything i listen to so thats why i want a good musical sub. I don't listen to rap or anything but if i have something on it's gonna have a strong bass note to it.

That price seems ok. Hold out for a better deal. I've seen them for $800 on Audiogon.

Ok cool, i'll keep looking then. Thanks!!!!
I would highly recommend outlaw audio. They deliver awesome performance for the price. They have a new sub that is designed has a quick response for it's size, good for both music and movies. They are rare to come buy but still a great price if purchased from their website. www.outlawaudio.com

I'll give em a look, thanks for the recommendation.

Also consider Velodyne SPL series 1200s.

Ditto!!!! I'm running dual Velo SPL-1200R's for both 2 channel & HT... they are simply amazing! No need to look any further as far as I'm concerned. I've tried others, but the Velo's simply out perform them.

That sounds like an awesome set-up. Where do you have those Velos crossed over? Just curious. Since I have powered subs in the Lsi 25's I have my 1200R crossed over at about 40-45 hz.

Would a SPL800 be worth grabbing? I know it's small but i found one for 300 shipped? Worth grabbing or go for the bigger sub?

That depends on how important it is to you how low the sub goes. Me- I love bass and the super low bass is the best part for me, so I went for the 15".

One thing to consider is tht your Lsi 15s already go pretty low with their 8 inch woofers. So the question is what would a spl800 add. Personally I would not waste my time with anything less than a spl 1000. I can't justify that with anything concrete. However, you don't want a sub that doesn't truly add to your system.

Be sure to keep your eye on the clearance deals at Audioadvisor. I've found that their clearance prices fluctuate in a somewhat random fashion. What costs $700 one day can cost $900 another. If you take your time you can sometimes catch a good deal and it will have a full warranty. No affil, btw.
