Receiver stuck in protect! +naked Megan Fox pictures

I lied. No Megan Fox pictures. Sorry. But now that I have your attention...

So I was having an awesome listening session and becoming way more familiar with my new 2 channel rig. I was noticing huge differences between my iPod (using lossless) connected through the 3.5mm jack and digital optical from my computer. Also was playing around with Audissey EQ settings and bass and treble controls. I was listening pretty damn loud and was in such a good mood! *

Then I decided to watch some scenes from the first Transformers. I just love the sound effects in this movie. For example, in the opening scene where the Decepticon transforms from a helicopter and attacks the military bass is awesome!

Then, after watching for awhile, with the volume very loud, my Marantz SR5003 receiver shuts down and goes into protect mode. I figure it just overheated. So after a while I try to turn it back on. But find it won't come out of protect. Disconnected everything, same deal!

What did I break?!*

The speakers are 4-ohm LSi 9s. I know the 5003 is 6-ohm rated but most sources say a decent receiver like this will handle 4 just fine.*

I know it wasn't brilliant to push my receiver that hard driving low impedance speakers, but come, did I actually blow it? What would have broken? I figured a mid priced receiver would have a fuse or transister blow first before severe damage took place...

What did I do?

Don't know if you broke it or not, but quite possible. Even Marantz' seperate power amps can't handle 4ohm loads, at least not the new MM8003, or even my 10 year old MM9000.

You might have let out the white magic smoke. That does not sound very good IMO. I don't know a lot of AVR's that are good on a 4ohm speakers.

Remember 4 ohm means average resistance. It can drop to 2ohm which in your case it might have and caused what you now have since you say it can do 6 ohm which might would be fine at low level listening.

Not sure how good you are with a volt meter or with electronic's but it might need a trip to the repair shop.

Did you unplug it completely from the outlet and let it sit for a few hours? A tech told me that's why people get frustrated when they bring in AVR's for service and they then fire up and work fine, to bring it in was the first time it was disconnected totally from the incoming power, which then triggered the reset.

Good advice on having it unplugged for a few hours.

If that fixes it and you still want concert level sound from your system look to invest in an external amp.

    +1 on the "Hard boot"
Also you might check the manual.
My B&K has a 'factory rest' key sequence, 3 button you push at the same time....I would think that would get it out of 'protect mode'.

Oh and here is that Megan Fox pic....

I had it unplugged for at least a night and have tried turning it on many times. Also tried resetting it through holding down 2 buttons for 3 seconds or whatever the manual said. Nothing seemed to help.

Speaking of external amps. Can anyone comment on the Niles SI-2125 amp?

Oh and thank you for not suggesting to "just turn it down." Because I do want concert level sound! I hate when I hear people say, "well just don't turn it up that loud." That's like buying a Lambo and never going over the posted speed limits.

Is your Marantz a new or refurbished unit?!?

I might have missed it, but have you tried disconnecting everything from the receiver (speakers and sources)? You could have a short somewhere in the system. If the receiver will continue to behave the same way, you'll have to get it serviced... :(

Niles makes whole house amps. this amp I have used many times and find it to be pretty good with speakers not very demanding. 8 ohm loads run excellent off this amp with good clean power and high SPL. It's well built and will last a very long time. All of Niles products are very good.

    ???????????????
First time I've ever heard of a piece of aluminum going bad.
Do you mean check to see if it's missing or not proberly re-installed?

If a hard reset doesn't work, and you've checked connections, then it's off to
the shop. Sounds like you're ready to go to an external amp.
LSI series speakers are murder on modern AVR stuff. The old Tweeter stores
had AVRS hooking up to the wall of speakers, and the LSI9's would
put them into protection with any real volume. I never understood mixing
4, 6 and 8 ohm speakers in those setups, but it was very common in all
stores. Only the real stereo shops were smart enough to dedicate
demo gear to 4 ohm speakers.

Since you like playing so loud you had better look at an amp that pushes 200wpc @ 8ohms. As you noted you already sent it into protection once. and the LSI's dip down into 2ohm. So the more power the better.

Now if you don't want to come up with the money for that much power, than I suggest you turn it down.

I hope it's your receiver that's broken & not your speakers!

Cpyder is your unit refurbished or not?

I purchased a refurbished Marantz AVR, using as a preamp only and the thing randomly went into protect. Sent it off for repairs, and its fixed now. They told me they had to replace the heat sink. Its been working fine now for months with no problems.

Or 200 wpc at 8, 400 at 4. That would get the job done.

No, I mean exactly what I said. 200wpc @8ohm. The more power you give them at 8ohm is the more power you will give them at 4ohm. And the LSI's as you have found out the hard way need LOTS of power.
