I've never been a "fan", but I was a teenager of the '80s, and she was by far the most talented female vocalist of the era. Her style was never quite my thing, but I would love to see her re-gain her stature and then hopefully shift to a more mature style of music. That voice, if it is still there, singing a more soulful/jazzy genre, would be just fantastic. Hopefully whatever damage she did to herself during all the self-destruction she was engaged in for so long can be reversed. Losing Bobby Brown was the smartest thing she's ever done.
I sure would hope she could make a come back but only time will tell. I don't think moving away from her original style would do her any good as I don't think this is exactly what fans would be looking from her.

Both Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are amazing vocalists....but only when backed by the right material and strong producers who can rein these "divas" in. When these 2 ladies are "on", they're excellent....such as Whitney's debut album and Mariah's "MTV Unplugged" album.

Looking at the video from this link, her voice seems somewhat screechy only while speaking, she might have to devote quite a bit of time to heal and re-strenght her voice back to what it used to be???
If you look at this poll results, it doesn't look too promessing so far (people who are real fans would have lied to them selves on this survey), I hope this survey isn't a pointer of her future success??

    Cheers!

I took the CD to work today. The consensus from listeners was that the songs were very pleasant to listen to...but the vocal power we had grown accustomed to just wasn't there.

At times it was difficult to recognize Whitney as Whitney. Whitney's voice and singing style on this album reminded me a lot of her cousin Dionne Warwick. Whitney's voice was often overshadowed or overwhelmed by background singers or the instrumental track. Sometimes she was talk-singing rather than singing (track 5-"A Song For You").

I don't know if the voice is gone for good...and I hope it isn't...but it was definitely MIA on this album.

I guess only time will tell however with the lost of the voice strenght would you say she is still a singer worthwhile to listen to at this point? What kind of comparision/rating when compared to today's female vocals (not talking about style but simple voice comparision to other females voices of this era)?

    Cheers!

Even as a mere shadow of her former self, Whitney is still better than much of what is out there today. However, compared to its formidable original version...with all its accompanying vocal pyrotechnics...her current voice is somewhat of a disappointment.

Whitney can still sing and her voice is subjectively more pleasant to listen to than most of the current crop of female vocalists.

That's what I figured, if she has a successfull come back, I guess people will simply get use to her new voice capability. Sure is a deception since we are accustomed to her above average voice performance but if she is still better than most of today's crop/crap, I guess she will get our devoted listening/attention again.

I don't regret buying the CD, and it grows on me the more I listen to it.

Knowing what she has put herself through over the recent past, it is a miracle that she has any voice left at all.

There is one song where some of the "old Whitney" shines through: "I Didn't Know My Own Strength". So, based on that, maybe she has a chance of regaining some of her former vocal glory.

If people also keep in mind that she is no longer as young as she used to be & the voice also changes with age, not to mention the abuse she put herself through. Hopefully in time she will do ok.

Boyle Tops Amazon, Houston and Beatles
    LEE HARRIS
    Published: September 7, 2009

“I Dreamed a Dream,” the album by Susan Boyle, the Scottish singing phenomenon, won’t be released until Nov. 24, but it has already hit No. 1 on Amazon’s Best Sellers in Music list, Agence France-Presse reported. In addition to being able to claim her “Britain’s Got Talent” audition video as one of the most watched on YouTube, Ms. Boyle, above, can now say she has topped the Amazon sales of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You,” as well as a remastered release of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road.”

I just checked Amazon. Boyle is #7. The rest of the top 10 are all Beatles. Whitney is #14.

I listened to a review of Whitney's CD on NPR yesterday in which they play snippets of various tracks....no bad at all. A definite update of her sound but not a total change-over, like that of Mariah's. Of course, she no longer sound like the Whitney I remember from the mid 80s. On the other hand, her "new" voice also makes her more believable in her delivery as she seems to restrain herself from doing the vocal gymnastics typical of her early albums. I'll buy her CD.

The NPR review I mentioned above played that track....excellent track.

Agreed, aging is also a big factor even if not more for singers.
