It is a case of improper upbringing. Perhaps I'm from a different era, but we taught our children not to touch things without first being given permission. People work very hard for the things they own and have different values they place on things.

I've never been able to grasp the childish notion that the stereo is my "toy" and you can't play with them. It is only stuff. There is a very good chance that nothing will be broken if somebody else pushes the play button besides me.

While at first that may seem contradictory, it isn't. When someone walks into my home and I say make yourself at home, I mean it. If I don't say that, I would expect a reserved and respectful demeanor from the visitor.

I'm with you on the upbringing part. I guess I could have been less abrasive, but frankly it would have been different had they not had their shoes on my furniture and cups on my wood tables. I guess I am used to being around adults who know how to act at a party. I am normally not anal with my gear. I let people use it all the time, but they should not be turning the system up in such a way to see how loud the bass can go.

You are right, I did embarrass my girlfriend. What bugs me though, is that even some of her friends knew I would be angry about what was happening and didn't say anything. It was just all around bad.

I guess everyone learned something last night. Next time I'll think before overreacting. Unfortunately, my head was not the most level after a full week of work and law school.

I doubt anyone could get music to come out of my system. Of course the first thing they would do is turn the volume to full and then get the sound to come on. It would be the last time they ever touched electronics due to immediate hearing loss and possibly heart attack. :)

Got outta hand quick with some idiots trying to muscle your gear without a clue. Glad you were able to show some restraint and not choke someone, LOL.:p Your a better man than me.:D

You mean by throwing them out while waving your 45 around in the air, or firing parting shots in the air while they drive away? I'm not sure guns would have helped very much in this case! Had he used a weapon as a means of showing people the door because of the abuse of a stereo system, everyone would probably be talking now about what a a-hole he is.

I must be old school, but I wouldn't even act like that in BB. I don't ask for permission, obviously, but even in a store, I try to treat the display equipment as if it were my own.

SS, without knowing you very well, I'm fairly confident that you absolutely adore your GF, judging from the few posts that I have read you make about her (including that wonderful pic where you pretend to attack her with an axe, IIRC). If she's worth it, and I'll venture to suggest that she is, maybe it's time to patch things up and organize a new party, with the right rules in place, and actually show off your equipment to these friends, and explain to them why someone can't just walk in and mess with it like it was some cheap crap from Wally World. For example, most people think an expensive amplifier/receivier will blow the drivers on a cheap speaker. Few people outside of forums such as CP realize that a cheap receiver (or HTiB) will blow the tweeter on expensive speakers when driven too loud. You'll be educating them at the same time, and they'll be the better for it, if they're smart enough to listen.

I think your right, BTW: your GF won't let this happen again. She seems like a very smart girl to me.

It is nearly impossible to turn my system on and have music playing without me actually doing it. Having said that, I have told my wife and my daughter that it is absolutely imperative that nobody even attempts to do so or to touch the system in any way, shape, or form.

However....I set up the system that they need only to turn on the BD player and the t.v. in order to watch a movie using only the tv speakers....they don't seem to mind.

I know that if I would have walked into the basement and find people messing with my stuff I would have taken a fit too.

Live alone and none of this kind of **** happens. Works for me. I NEVER have to worry about this kind of crap. My house, my gear. It would drive me crazy knowing that someone other than me might be messing with my stuff while I'm not around. Its bad enough to have to worry about cleaning people or burglars. I'd be pissed too...

Don't take things so seriously now, as I explained earlier I would've been mad pissed about the situation, but who would act in such a way as you describe? Well, in our world its quite possible...but I've owned guns for the past 3-4 years and have never even pulled one out to even show it to anyone. Only person that's ever seen it is my wife, and trust me there was a situation where I should've pulled it out but instead my wife chose the better alternative and called the cops  It's a long story regarding that, happened in CA. The neighbor from upstairs barreled in through our patio door drunk trying to come at me one night, later to find out (after being arrested and spending a day in jail) that his wife had cheated on him with some guy who he thought was me.

And SolidS, congratulations. For alot of people these are tough times, but its good to hear you're pulling right through :D

Thanks for all the kind wisdom guys. I think your comments have balanced my otherwise lopsided anger. Things are good with the girlfriend, the party just got outta hand too fast for her. I apologized for losing it. She said I had every right to be angry. All is perfect now.

Also, thanks for the congrats on my new job. I am hoping this new firm transition will be smooth. I think I will enjoy my work more so than at my last firm. Three more semesters of law school and I am done!

    Thanks,

In my younger days, when people were inclined to drop in, with or without my presence, thet were met by a sign that said"if you don't own it, keep your *%$#@** hands off of it. Also, the 2x4 fashioned into a club, painted with dayglow paint, and under a blacklite, appropriately labeled"pig whomper" might have sent a message to guests.

I think Gordon has the more reasonable approach. I think much of this was caused by that fact that you didn't really want them there in the first place. Even though that was the case, and they were acting disrespectful of your property...as the albiet unwilling "host" you should have acted in a calmer less confrontational manner. While not all of these people were friends of your girlfriend...some were and I'm sure she is embarrassed. It seems like her motives were good even though not well executed.

I know this is not the view of the majority here...and I am not defending their actions at all because they were wrong...but a polite "please don't touch the gear and don't put your feet up on the furniture" request FIRST...then ask the offenders to leave if they don't comply would be the better course IMO. I seems like you went off for reasons not totally centered around the gear based on some of the comments you made in the OP.

    Again, JMO.

I've had this problem before and when I visit the room where the offenses are taking place, a hearty "What the F$@# are you doing?" usually gets attention quickly enough. I then inform those offenders that I'm disappointed in their behavior and it is not appreciated and to please modify their behavior to a more appropriate level. Of course, it's not always so pleasant and nice but, like what's been said, it's my house, respect it because I wouldn't be doing this in your house. If I have to babysit more times, I will go and start pushing feet off of tables, pickin' up drinks and handing them to their owners and tell them to find a coaster, they are everywhere and even kicking people out of rooms and locking doors. I'm not going to be a jerk and ruin everybody's good time just because a small fraction of the party goers are incapable of being respectful human beings.

That said though, I try to match my gear well enough so that even if someone was doing such things with my rig, they wouldn't be able to break it before they reached their pain threshold. I don't worry about my gear if someone is **** around with it. I get mad because it's going to take me forever to get all the settings back to where I had them!

My girlfriend tends to not have an issue respecting other people's stuff and I put together a simple yet pretty stout KEF/NAD rig for her and she yells at her own mother when her mom starts to mess around and abuse it.

Although, my ex's friends had come over one night with their bratty kids and I heard a low thumping from the room where my SDA's were. I went to find out what the problem was thinking an amp had blown and shorted out, causing a ground loop problem or something. Nope. It was a 3 year old kicking one of the passive radiators. I flipped my **** on the kid and mom and dad were offended. I told them what I thought in no uncertain terms and...well...they said they were never coming back and they didn't.
