I walk into my apartment and everyone yells surprise. Thanks. My girlfriend thought it would be nice to have some friends over my place to celebrate my new firm job. I have like four people I call friends. Turns out she invites some of her friends as well who invite some of their friends. 20 people drinking in my apartment . . . with shoes on. Fine. She didn't call Nikolas812, so I know only three of my friends could be there. None are there. Just people I don't know.

AND then, I hear it. Bass. Tons of it. Someone is playing techno/hip hop on my Emmys. I don't bolt downstairs like you'd might expect. Instead, I walk to the circuit breaker near the entrance to my apartment and cut the circuit to my stereo room. I'm livid. And, now my girlfeind knows its gonna hit the fan. I walk down to my listening room, and see two **** trying to get the system back on. And, some **** chick on my couch with here feet up over the side and shoes on.

I begin yelling for everyone to get out. The party began at 9:30. It lasted one half hour before I ended it.

I'm near killing someone.

Don't blame you at all, I would have been extremely pissed. At least have the decency to ask if they can play some music, but to touch you're equipment without even asking just bad form.

She's still my girlfriend. Lesson learned on her part I guess. I know she was just trying to celebrate. Had she called any of my real friends, none of them would have allowed idiots to even enter my listening room. The thing about being in a good relationship is knowing you can screw up pretty damn bad and it's still ok.

I'm just glad they didn't find my vinyl collection and attempt to figure all that fun stuff out.

To my girlfriend's defense, she thought they had my cheap 5.1 system pumping rap in the other room. I guess that proves **** sounds **** like no matter the spakers.

Yep, thing is there's no firearm here in the household and two, my dog is good-natured. No bite history/etc but has had basic obedience and guard dog training. :D

Our husky in the otherhand, shes as loveable and affectionate as they get. Too bad she wouldn't do anything in case someone broke in or something.....probably even beg the dude for a treat.

Oh, and I wouldn't go that far as to shoot someone. Just explained how I'd exhibit to others the severity of the issue if such a thing were to happen in my case (and if something was in fact damaged and/or broken)

I don't think I could ever be violent with someone over some possessions. I think violence against another person is only worthwhile to protect yourself or your loved ones. Violence may be justified to protect your possessions, but the aftermath of trying to explain your actions and the possible guilt thereafter (if you really hurt someone) is just not worth it to me.

I personally would have handled it a bit differently for a couple reasons.

I would have walked in the room and turn it off and calmly stated that if a particular piece of music was desired, I'd be more than happy to put it on and make any adjustments and while here, please don't touch the gear. After that, the gloves would come off and they would be invited to leave.

This approach would have done a couple things. First everybody would understand the rules of your home. Second, the party could continue, which was important to your girlfriend since she did set it up for you. Thirdly, after the party, I would have spoken to my girlfriend about who is allowed to play the gear.

While I don't allow strangers walking in my house and playing my gear without my permission, those folks were obviously not raised correctly and probably have a boom box for an audio system. It is no excuse but they don't know any better.

I'm with you Solid... I probably would have had a small heart attack myself. But you may want to look at it from their perspective. Ninety-nine percent of the population sees a stereo as a means to an end - i.e. listen to music and have a good time. I would hesitate to state that falling into this majority is indicative of an "improper upbringing" as has been suggested. Think of it as turning on a television at a party (as pitiful a party as that would be). Would that illicit the same outrage?

I know for a fact that Ms. Manners in no way discusses proper form when dealing with audio gear. However, any and all rules should have been laid at the outset by your girlfriend. Maybe she just got caught up in the moment and it slipped her mind?

That being said... I'm with Ricardo. Shooting someone? Over stereo equipment? That's effin' hilarious. Anyone who would think to do that, please play the scenario over in your head accompanied by Benny Hill music. Jesus.

I think Gordon has the more reasonable approach. I think much of this was caused by that fact that you didn't really want them there in the first place. Even though that was the case, and they were acting disrespectful of your property...as the albiet unwilling "host" you should have acted in a calmer less confrontational manner. While not all of these people were friends of your girlfriend...some were and I'm sure she is embarrassed. It seems like her motives were good even though not well executed.

I know this is not the view of the majority here...and I am not defending their actions at all because they were wrong...but a polite "please don't touch the gear and don't put your feet up on the furniture" request FIRST...then ask the offenders to leave if they don't comply would be the better course IMO. I seems like you went off for reasons not totally centered around the gear based on some of the comments you made in the OP.

    Again, JMO.
