The only good thing about him is that he was a Red Sox fan. Maybe he got a little too upset when the Red Sox started to implode and hit the bottle even harder.

I wish no ill towards the dead, but it was well beyond the time for him to leave the U.S. Senate. He was a power **** to the very end. He was in the process of pushing the Governor of Massachusetts to change the law in the state to allow the governor to appoint a replacement for him rather that allowing the people to hold a special election to fill the seat. If he was so worried about the people, he should have resigned his seat and allowed his replacement to have been elected last November. Edward M. Kennedy may have been a legend in the Senate, but he will be remembered by me as the Harpo Marx of the Kennedy brothers.

... appoint a replacement UNTIL a special election can be held. Right now they're SOL for 5 months. Kennedy wanted the governor to be able to immediately appoint someone in the interim.

Something which, by the way, he was instrumental in DISALLOWING in the past when it did not serve his "party."

:D Glad to see someone has a good grasp of the situation. Anyhow, he was on the right side of the issue in the end. Personally, I think we should have immediate appointment by Gov or state legislature followed by special election ASAP. Every state should have continuous representation, but ultimately there needs to be an election.

States no longer have any representation in congress thanks to the 17th ammendment... ;)

Anyway, bobmans article is pretty much how I feel. He's gone and in the past, time to move on now.

If Ted Kennedy had been an NFL player, he would have gotten probation and still been allowed to play ball. Why should we still dwell on Chappaqudick.

I am kidding of course, but in a way I am grateful something happened to keep him from the White House.

Of course that WAS the case until just a few years ago (2004 actually) when Mitt Romney was the govenor and John Kerry was running for President. The law at the time was that the Massachusetts govenor would IMMEDIATELY appoint a replacement to serve until the next election. The Democratic controled state legislature did not want to allow Romney to appoint a Republican to the post so when it became obvious that Kerry was going to win the nomination they quickly passed the new succession law to prevent him from doing so. Of course now they are gung ho to have the law changed so they can be "represented". Just a lot of political BS.

No comment on Kennedy...other than condolences to his family.

Now for a somewhat more nuanced commentary, perhaps, from the White House political director for President Reagan and former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee:

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/08/26/rollins.kennedy.gop/index.html

It's nice to see a more classy approach IMO. Even when you utterly and completely disagree with someone, it's still possible, preferable even, IMO, to remain respectful of the dead, at least for the duration of a period of mourning for the family and next of kin.

I'm so mad about this. I live near Philadelphia, and on a lot fo the talk radio stations, it is overwhelmingly negative...only focusing on some of the downfalls...etc. Yet, on some of the same radio stations, people are overwhelmingly in support of Michael Vick, who for some reason deserves forgiveness - basically because he might score some touchdowns for the Eagles. Kennedy did some great things for our country, and was a great American - that's how I will remember him.
