Post your thoughts on Gladiator, I'm now reading comments that the lossless audio doesn't even stand up to the DTS track on the DVD. Sounds like this title got one hell of a fubar release to Blu.

I read some reviews saying it was'nt that bad but then again here's to hoping it sounds well. I can't wait to see it on the 126" screen when I return home.

The picture I can live with it has some noticable halo effect and a few other minor picture issues but the sound is below qualities expected for a movie that has such a awesome in your face audio track.

"Gladiator" at least (I'm uncertain about "Braveheart") seems to be getting negative reviews, for the most part, on Blu regarding its 1080p encode; I haven't seen it yet, so I cannot comment, but I know the Signature Selection DVD looks pretty sweet upconverted. And I'm sticking to my feelings about the DTS-ES 6.1 mix on that disc as well -- still wall rattling to this day.

Picked these up at BB tonight. I A/B tested using my Toshiba HD-A2 to play the regular DVD. I only watched maybe 10 minutes of each movie, but here's my .02 cents regarding the PQ. Basically no difference in PQ on Gladiator. Braveheart was definitely better on Blu-ray. Colors were just sharper and more vibrant. It was late and the rest of the family was in bed, so I didn't get to test the audio.

Thanks for the report, PSO! Much appreciated!

I've heard great things about the Toshibas for DVD upconversion, so these discs must have played back primo from that deck...you really found NO PQ difference from the DVD of Gladiator to the Blu-ray of the title? Which version of Gladiator do you have -- one of the single-disc releases with the Dolby-only tracks, or the two-disc Signature Selection? There was also a massive deluxe type edition released after that -- but as far as I recall, all discs had the same transfer...I know that the Signature Selection looks fantastic upconverted to 1080p -- and my player absolutely sucks with upscaling. Were you watching it upscaled to 1080p from the Toshiba?

Would be interesting in hearing your thoughts about the audio when you get a chance; I haven't had a moment to even request these titles from my press people over at DreamWorks (well, for Gladiator anyway) to take a spin...but thanks for the info!

Gladiator is the Signature Selection upconverted to 1080p on my Epson 6100 PJ. I'll admit I'm no videophile, so this is kind of a layman's review, but that's what I saw. If I would have had my wife doing the A/B switching, there's no way I could have identified which version was playing.

Thanks again for reporting back in...indeed, if you were running the Signature Selection of Gladiator, it would look fantastic upscaled on a better machine than my Panasonic 'BD10A -- I understand that you say you're no videophile, but this report and information is interesting and important. It's weird that the DVD would look so much similar to the Blu-ray though, but the Signature Selection's transfer is pristine, for 480 resolution DVD.

I suppose this saves me another double-dip purchase of an older title to replace on Blu...

Everyones always complaining about the poor transfers to Blu-ray.

So...I propose that the complainers do the transfers themselves. Don't let these Hollywood people do them...just take over the process.

If a DVD is transferred to Blu-ray...does it still use the lossless codecs?

    Damn, I'm glad I'm not a videophile.

Oh yes, the Blu Ray Gladiator does have better picture; I watched around 30 minutes of each in my Hitachi CRT (not 1080p), and the Blu Ray looks better; has more depth, and colors look more real; can't believe you couldn't notice how much better the armors looked....the golden details on shields was amazing. I played the DVD on my Toshiba HD-A35, which is an excellent upconverter.
On the sound, the 6.1 DTS from the Std DVD is superior.

Bah? I'm pretty sure the studios don't give out the masters to people so they can make their own versions of BluRay.

    Hmm...it must be...lol

And for the record, Hollywood studios regularly give me their master tapes. Several of the DVD to Blu-ray conversions were performed by me actually. Due to contract agreements, I'm not allowed to say which ones, but rest assured that it was me.:p

Everyones always complaining about the poor transfers to Blu-ray.

We just want to justify spending the time and $$$$ on the high definition transition (cables, HD player, HD receivers, HDTV, and higher price movies) and know we had a good deal. Furthermore, some folks are upgrading their DVD collection or just their favorite movies to BR. When the studios release a poor transfer, it's a big let down considering the amount of advertisement and hype the industry has poured into how realistic the picture and sound quality will be.
