The service and funeral happened today. It wasn't about a young man being taken away from us. It was about what Greg had done while he was here. He worked at a retirement community and made friends with everyone who lived or worked there. He helped me get Jesse into a GED program. He helped Jesse.
Greg pulled himself from a not so good homelife, graduated high school and was working on an occupational therapy degree.
My sister and I raised Jesse, the best we could. But this young man saw something more. And gave Jesse a chance.....

    He was only 18.
That young is truly sad however, your testimonial points out that his life was far from being in vain. RIP young man :(

Russ ... what can I say? This is terrible news and I will keep you, your family, your nephew, Greg and everyone else involved in my thoughts.

From the comments, it seems that this intersection is a "repeat offender" in terms of poor safety, visibility and speed limits being ignored. Traffic accidents always seems such a senseless, avoidable, loss of life ... at eighteen (loss of a young adult with so much still to do, and contribute) ... or eighty-one (loss of a beloved grandparent and parent, with still so much to do and contribute, despite thier age).

A family member of mine was involved in a serious accident a few years ago, also invloving a truck, and requiring that he be cut from his vehicle. He was in a coma, underwent immediate surgery and came within inches of death for about two weeks afterward. He still has no memory of the accident, and in the end, he "only" lost both legs. It took months in hospital to recover otherwise. He's still struggling with the consequences, but this type of thing reminds us all that no matter how unlucky we may think we are, we should keep remembering how lucky we may actually be, despite our daily struggles in life.

Maybe Jesse will experience problems because of his serious injuries, but hopefully he will heal completely, both physically and otherwise. From the little I know about you, I feel confident that you will be helping him along the way.

I've been away for a week, Russ, and was missing your wonderful humor. I'm sorry that this was the first thread where I found you here again, on CP.
    Alea jacta est!

Thanks Kex and everybody else. Jesse sez thanks too. I told him y'all were praying and sending good thoughts his way.
He just got back from the ENT doctor about his ear. There is some internal damage to the cochlea but the doc said it may heal itself.
He walks a little sideways sometimes. Like a crab. I hope he will have good hearing in the future because he likes to listen to my set-ups.
