There is a set of SDA SRS 1.2s listed on Craigslist in central NJ. I'd love to buy them, but I probably can't justify the expense right now. Here's the link:

http://cnj.craigslist.org/ele/1249705516.html

Seller claims that they were purchased in 1989 (he has the receipt, so probably original owner), and says that they have SL2000s and are not TL.

He sent me the attached picture.

The tweeters sure look like SL3000s, don't they? Are these in fact SRS 1.2TLs, and were SRS 1.2TLs available in 1989?

Finally, although I think his price is too high, they do look reeeeeal niiiiiiiice. They're not too far from where I work, so if someone is interested, I can go check them out.

Also, if someone decides to buy them (I wish it were me) and needs help moving them, please let me know. I don't have an adequate vehicle, but I am big and strong.....

I don't think the price is too high. Local pickup is priceless. Go get them. These probably will not last to long.

Agreed. The tweets are SL-3000's 1.2tl's were made in 1989. Excellent deal for those speakers.

To apply "they are too much" logic some use here:

Let's say we have a mint pair of 1.2tl's on ebay. You bid and win them at say $1250. Crating and shipping will probably be at least $400.

So, say they were crated standing upright and shipped to you. You have $1650 in them when they arrive. All 16 6 1/2' drivers suffered from magnet shift due to being crated standing up and the rigors of the road. Where are you now with the cost?

Ok, so they laid them down and crated them. Some moron stacks a heavy skid on top. Grill frames are now broken and there's other damage when they arrive. Where are you now with the cost?

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of penny wise and pound foolish folks that inhabit the internet.

Recently I drove to PA from Massachusetts for a pair of SDA-SRS that turned out to be 1.2tls. Total cost for rental van and gas: $115. Getting the speakers home intact and undamaged: Priceless.

Just so everyone is clear (well, everyone who really cares), if I could pay $1,500 for them, I'd find a way to pay $1,800. But, much as I would love to have them, and realizing that I may never again have such an opportunity, I simply cannot spend that much money this year.

I'm also not deperate, as I bought nspindel's SDA 2Bs on which he did an excellent TL mod.

So, as much as I want them, I can't buy them (keep telling myself that),

I am open to performing a public service to make sure they go to someone here who will enjoy them and give them a proper home.

Of course, anyone wishing to give me an unsecured loan with open-ended payback terms would be given an open invitation to enjoy my new speakers any time they wish.....

Would move these speakers standing up or laying down on their backs if you could do a local pickup in a van? Which shipping position brings about magnet damage?

I don't know how you could secure them standing up. Moving these speakers on there back would work fine.

When I moved my SRS 2's I actually found that having them rest on their "face" to be better. I lost a driver between NJ and Harrisburg Pa with them on their backs. I drove from Harrisburg to Toledo,OH with them on their fronts and lost know drivers. I know this is a little anecdotal but it worked for me.

When I pick my 1.2TLs up I had them on their sides in the back of an SUV for 18 hours. I had no problems at all with them.

I brought my 1.2tls home to North central Massachusetts from near Philly. Speakers laid on their back with the front facing up. No problems whatsoever.

I had a nice new renta-minivan, and plenty of blankets. It was a fun trip.

The 1.2tl's are a fun trip too! For years I have owned all but the big dogs.

Hey Dawg, You can't be a BIG Dawg unless you own the BIG Polks!!!!!

Go get them!!!!, Then Sell your 2A's

    Sal

    Sal,

I hear you! I'm dying to make it happen, but I simply can't at the moment. I love my 2Bs, but would sell them in a heartbeat to get the 1.2s. Unfortunately, that still leaves me waaaaaaaaay short. And, 2 of my kids and my wife have birthdays this month (my wife's is a BIG one).

By the way, since I've never had the opportunity before, beautiful restoration job (and very well documented) on your 1.2s.

I did send the guy an offer, low but not unreasonable (higher than some on here have recently paid), and he never responded. Not sure how I would have scrounged up the dough if he said yes, but couldn't live with myself unless I at least made an attempt.

Who knows, if he still has them in a month, things may be different.

Yes. It started making the scratching noise they make when they go bad. They had been checked in NJ.

Interesting find. I'm right over the Burlington Bristol bridge so I'm not far at all. I wouldn't mind going and listening to them. 1800.00 I can find so many better far greater deals then to buy them. I wouldn't give him anymore then a grand or less. They are old big and not as good as most 1800.00 speakers of today.

Not saying that there is anything wrong with the big un's,, but 1800.00 spent wisely will get you alot of speaker,, forget about better, think different,,,some prefer laid back,,others,,up front,,so not necessarily better,,but different,,,each has it's own merits.

I have heard many types of speakers and until I joined the group last year I never knew about SDA's. Now I collect them and would have to say they are the best bang for your buck you can get. These SDA SRS speakers if built today would be sold in the three to five thousand dollar range. Few vintage speakers hold there value such as these speakers.

and an open mind............same thread on a non POLK board..replies and comments would be very different.....it really depends on what YOU like..I still throw my M-1's back into the mix as I personally love the highs from that tweeter...listening to them now while the 2.3tl's sit unconnected...variety is the spice of life and yes there are many many great sounding spakers out there.........

    True that George!

    In the my house currently:

    Infinity IRS-Beta
    Nearfield Acoustics Pipedream Reference 18's
    a/d/s/ L-910 Series II
    a/d/s/ L-980
    a/d/s/ L-710

    JBL 4430
    JBL 4311b
    Paradigm something or other
    Genelec 1032A monitors
    Polk SRA SDS 1.2tl
    Carver Amazing Silver

Not to mention the JBL sound reinforcement stuff for DJ use.

Variety is indeed the spice of life. However I find the big Polks a lot of fun. I like BIG sound, loud and clean, the Polks have it in spades when amped properly.

    Regarding shipping/transporting-

If you have the speakers standing upright while moving, you run a great risk of losing one or more drivers during transport. The glue on the driver magnets is getting weaker on the old polks every day. One bump could break the glue loose, the magnet slides down, and gets locked to the voicecoil, rendering the driver useless. This also goes for laying them on their sides.

If you lay the speakers on their backs, you don't have to worry about the magnets shifting downward on the drivers, but you do have to worry about them falling off completely. Gravity will still be working against you!

If you can lay them on their faces SAFELY, without damaging the fronts of the speakers, do it. It's the best way to transport them. You don't have to worry about the magnets sliding, and you also don't have to worry about them falling off, because gravity is keeping them in place on the back of the driver.

If you're going to be having them crated and shipped freight, it's usually advised to have the seller pull all the midwoofers and box them separately, secure in bubble wrap so they can't move an inch. Usually it's easiest to take and zip tie two drivers together, face to face, then wrap and continue to the next pair... etc.

I paid $175 for my SDA2's, then had to immediately drop another $100 on replacement drivers for the two that were locked up :(
    Ludicrous gibs!

As we spoke elsewhere, I do not see mine going anywhere for quite a while......I'm having too much fun with them, that and I waited a LONG time for a nice pair within a reasonable driving distance.
