The movie Christiane F. can be partially credited for keeping my system drug free (for the most part) during my high school and college years. The depiction of drug induced depravity and the horrors of addiction remain with me to this day.

    Try ERASERHEAD.

The best way I can describe it is that it's as if a schizophenic person dropped acid, then fell asleep, and had a terifying nightmare. and somehow filmed the whole thing in black and white for you to watch.

Makes Lynch's later Blue Velvet or Mulholland drive look like Mary Poppins.

I watched it was my first date with my current wife of 28 years.....hmmmmmm.

The only disturbing thing about is how could anyone sit throught the whole
thing. My two sons came over to watch it. I left after the 30 minute mark.
I really didn't get any part of the thing. You'd have to be high or under
    20 I guess.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I watched Human Centipede after a buddy of mine kept saying he wanted to see it. He doesn't have Netflix streaming and I do, so I was suckered in to watching. The G/f wouldn't even step in the room and I wish that I had never watched that movie. Most disturbing thing that I've seen.

This is a movie that had me thinking and changed my world view on War.

It takes place in World War 1. A bunch of friends are all fired up to join up and go fight the Germans. They have a totally romantc view of War. Glory, Fame, Women. Minor skin wounds are the worst thing that can happen. They haven't even gotten laid yet they are so young.

One gets blown up by artillery. The Medical corp thinks the horribly mutilated body is brain dead and decides to remove whats left of all his limbs, His vocal cords, eyes,ears.etc. are ruined in the blast.
They want to see how long "it" will live. The problem?
    He isn't brain dead.
I sat and thought about that movie for what seemed like days.
I doubt anyone here has seen it. I saw it about 20 years ago I think.
No, its not a horror movie so bad its good like todays gernerations seem to get into. (my Kids)
Anyway, thats my intense movie pick.

Hmm, now I'm considering removing this from my instant queue....

And I still have to say Seven is VERY high on my "films that disturbed me" list. I guess the conundrum at the end is most infuriating. I still wonder how I would have reacted were I in Brad Pitt's shoes...

Phew!...nearly avoided staying with that horrible soon-to-be country singer. Next please.

I saw that movie when i was 12...i was a bit weirded out. Good call. But then again, the floating head in Big Trouble in Little China weirded me out so that's not saying much.

I'd like to add one: David Lynch's Inland Empire. It's so depressing and confusing, more in the Requiem for A Dream way (one of his other movies), not gory but still leaving disturbing images in your head. I'm still very afraid of those rabbit heads

As for Human Centipede remove it. I thought it was totally retarded. As for being sick I thought it should have been worse. They really could have upped the ante with the operation scene. Really if film makers are going to go for gore go for it. The piecing together was real lame too. You could have just tied them together and had the same effect. More surgery and "sharing" would have gone a long way.

I agree and remember that movie well. I also remember him with no legs or arms or eyes or ears or mouth trying to communicate to the doctors and nurses with morse code and the first thing he said when he successfully communicated.

...I saw about 20 minutes of "Hostel" and found that over the top disturbing, too. The scene where dude is going at the Asian girl with a blowtorch and she escapes with her eyeball dangling, until she cuts it off and all the green **** oozes out, was quite the stomach turner. I'll not be watching the entire movie anytime during this life.

I think this may be the first movie that I can not stomach.

I know this thread and list are old, but most of them on it don't really belong with a few exceptions.

There's a difference between a film that's genuinely disturbing and one that's just going for pure shock value to the point where you want to turn away or turn it off. The number one on his list, and a few others, are only good for the latter.

The most disturbing movies are the ones that can get the message across without beating you over the head by insulting your intelligence and throwing cheap shocks and taboos in your face. That's what makes them stick with you for a while.

Se7en, Silence of the Lambs...movies like that certainly have some shock value thrown in, but largely the disturbing factors are driven by the story. The best horror films have some level of plausibility to them. Se7en is still one of my favorite movies of all time.

The original "Saw" movie was like that. The rest of the sequels just did it a disservice. The first one was acted fairly well and had enough twists and psychological horror of having to make the decisions without the gore. There wasn't that much gore in the movie at all, actually. It took a look in to the human mind and addressed a darker side. Made alot of people really think about it.

Only time I was ever in a theater for a "horror/thriller" movie and the audience was dead silent.

The sequels were just about how much more twisted they could make the situations and decisions to be made.

I guess I don't see the point in going to a flick to be grossed out/have nightmares for months/get real depressed etc. I go to a flick to be entertained or heck, to enjoy it! The real world is too depressing enough, why make your world worse? Just my 2 cents.

I didn't mean that is was 'good'. As for pointless, I probably agree...but most pointless?

If you want to see a film that 50 percent of a New York audience walked out on get Stalker by Tarkovsky! Considered a 'classic', but most Americans find it boring, pointless and pretentious--I can't agree on this one.

Then there are Ozu films? Not much happens, camera NEVER moves, camera height is at the level of person sitting in the lotus position. But they're absolutely 'incredible'! Again, probably not for a Hollywood audience.

Of course none of these films qualifies under the OP's Thread-line. So no need to continue down that road.

I agree, El Topo was overrated but it WAS disturbing in its own time.

I did enjoy the films you mention, though, (Se7en and Silence of the Lambs).

You hit the nail on the head Demi. For me, I'm more disturbed by what's left unsaid. Or at very least you don't need to show horrible violence and blood.

The ending to The Boy With Striped Pajamas bothered me to absolutely no end. I was torn; I didn't feel bad for his **** dad since that's what he was doing to the Jewish kids, but I still felt bad for his son who didn't know better. Yup, that one still bothers me.

Show me a bunch of blood and guts and I'm probably going to laugh, or think of my friend who does gore/beauty make up on films for a living.

No, leave the worst parts to the imagination and you get much more "disturbed mileage", at least from me.

The surgeon is a great actor, loved that off the wall movie

My new most disturbing movie is "The Butcher" .... OMFG ... This is one of the flicks that makes you realize that you have bitten off more than you cant chew

Its a movie about people with cameras on there heads thats about to star in a snuff movie so the camera switches back and forth to victim and torturer .Its asian and I felt so bad for the victims, when it starts up you know that the rest are off getting tortured but you cant see and just wondering what they re going through with all the chainsaw noises etc

The movie is not just gore and does have character development and a good structure
