Mike, it's more the premise of possesion than the actual "visual" effects. The demonic undercurrents are what are uncomfortable (not for religous reasons) and not so much the cinematography. Sure, some of the effects are campy by today's standards but the story line is little disturbing.

I suppose one has to believe or experience that kind of stuff to truly be a little uncomfortable with the whole story.

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. I found Jacobs Ladder weid and a bit confusing but not disturbing. Requiem hit all to
close to home for me. Very Very powerfull!

    5. Audition

Audition is still one of the weirder movie watching experiences I’ve ever had. I popped it in honestly expecting horror and mayhem, and instead got some sort of bland romantic drama for the first half of the movie. But it eventually took a 180 into insanity with one of the most visceral endings I have ever seen. Takashi Miike could have filled several spots on this list (think Ichi the Killer or Oldboy, amongst others), but instead I decided to just pick what I think is his most disturbing, which to me was most definitely Audition.

l had no idea it was a horror flick because of the blurbs, and I liked Miike's other weird **** I'd seen like Happiness of the Katakuris.
I read that when Odishon premiered, normally blase Tokyo audiences literally ran shrieking out of the theaters. Unfortunately I read that after I'd seen it.

Let us not forget about the first time you ever watched "Deliverance" or "Midnight Cowboy".

Those are disturbing by just about anyone's standards, except for maybe a few back-woods rednecks.

I watched Audition last night and it was disturbing. Early in the movie you see the women just sitting on the floor with a cloth bag in the back ground for a few seconds then the bag moves. WTF is next?

There were many scenes with audio equipment in the background but I didn't recognize any of the brands. Yucky movie and well done.

I guess you aren't supposded to know what happened in the end.

The curb stomp scene in "American History X" certainly qualifies for one of the most disturbing/shocking scenes in cinematic history....

Though that scene is pretty brutal, Audition in on a whole other level.

I heard about a German movie the other day whose CONCEPT is so disturbing I'm afraid to mention it, let alone the execution (which I will never see). It's called "Human Centipede." You can Google it if you have a strong stomach, but I really wouldn't recommend it.

I know. I know. I'm amazed not only that someone actually thought of the concept for the movie, but that they found enough people willing to actually put the movie together, including actors.

Then I realized it was out of Germany, and was no longer quite as surprised.

Well, after reading the description, they DID say that they didn't tell the actors that they were going to be going ATM until they were already cast. :p

Hard Candy was disturbing, but I liked it. I realised when I got to the end of the movie that there was no soundtrack... the movie is just dialog...

I've seen Jacob's Ladder. Eraserhead was just wierd. My son's were watching it,
and I sat in for about 15 minutes of it. IF you are over 20 or not under the influence,
    do not watch Eraserhead.

Eraserhead is an extremely good movie (One of Lynch's best). I also highly recommend Inland Empire (One of the "scarriest" movies I have ever seen).

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Water ship Down: KICK's **** i love that movie. I still have the original VHS of it.

There is a book with the same name I read when I was in 4th grade which I doubt would be the same but who knows, I"ll have to look that up.
I've seen requiem as I own it, I don't think its really all that bad, maybe a little sad as what can happen but not disturbing if you ask me.

An anime movie about WWII, Grave of The Fireflies, is designed to get to you emotionally. I know it bothered me for some time.
