He might get an "A" for creativity, but a Pierce County student's essay presentation on the legalization of pot now has him facing legal charges.

In the middle of his presentation, the Peninsula High School student lit up a joint, a marijuana cigarette, and started smoking it, said Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.

The demonstration occurred before 150 other students at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor.

"Unfortunately, you have a 3.7, 3.8 grade point student that...a week before graduation gets himself kicked out of school to make a point. There's a lot of different ways he could have done this, but flaunting it that way definitely wasn't the way to go," says Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.

Troyer says the student continued smoking the joint, and then swallowed the remnants before he was arrested.

He's now facing charges of marijuana possession.

Did the presentation happen indoor or outdoor? He probably would have gotten away with a warning if it was held outside. Smoking is no longer allowed indoors when it comes to public places or even 18+. So lighting up a joint or smoke will get you in trouble.

Don't know what it's like in the US, but here in Canada people walk down the street smoking pot. There is a weed cafe down the street from where I work where people can bring in their 'own bud' and rent a room with vaporizers and smoke away. When I smoke pot outside, no one will even look twice. Of couse, I use a cigaweed, where the pot is mixed with cigarette tobacco and stuffed inside a cigarette.

I'm glad to see someone stand up for what they believe in, regardless if it gets them into trouble or not.

It's good for him to stand up in what he believes in, but he's getting a record before graduating high school. I think he could have made his point differently without the need to light up inside. Just IMHO.

I agree there are consequence's, but as is said.... no risk, no reward.

Hopefully he is under 18, and it's a misdemeanor and wont follow him forever.

True, pot is accepted by the majority today because of people like him. Even if he's over 18, most places have cut down the penalty for posession of pot, so getting a clean record again shouldn't be too hard for him hopefully.

Look at that hardened criminal...with his 3.8 GPA. I thought smoking pot made you stupid...

Good to see him standing up for what he believes in...but that was a pretty poor choice on his part. There are other ways he could have made his point.

A lot of people are starting to come around though, and realizing that it's not as bad as it's been made to seem in the past.

Ya know what's sad though? In most places in this country, if you have any kind of drug offense on your record, you're automatically ineligible for financial aid as a college student. I find that ridiculous. This kid has a 3.8 GPA, and probably won't be able to get financial assistance for college now because of this. Hopefully his family has money.

A medical marijuana policy has just about passed in Illinois! The Senate has approved it by a 30-28 vote. The House passed a similar bill back in March. If it get's passed into law, Illinois will become the 14th state with a Medical Marijuana program, joining Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

In the USA you can get into even more trouble if you are dealing or using drugs within 1000 feet from a school.

So in America if you are a drug dealer you try to get a house that is more than 1000 feet from a school just incase you get caught!

YOu don't have to be a drug dealer, if you just have a lot of parties you gotta be careful that you're not too close to a school.

Yeah, this isn't Canada. In our outdoors pot is just as illegal, and people still get their panties in a bunch over it.

Americans really don't get it do they??

We are rapidly becoming a third world country. Let me think, oh yes! school is for education. Let me think, oh yes this is probably against school policy. None of these things seemed important to this student.

Is this happening in China, Japan, Korea or Indian where they take school seriously? I doubt it.

Carry on, light up another doobie and think of your children living in Mexico, Latin America or another 3rd world country. Thanks where America is rapidly headed. By 2100 we will be a rural farm country. Our technology will belong to someone else. The only thing left will be farming, if the large foreign corporations buy it all first, we're really screwed. Tough times ahead, nobody seems to care. Read books, educate what is going on around you. As a society, we have contorted values, or none at all that will take us to ruin.

Just for kicks, I'd like to see a poll of how many members here regularly smoke pot while enjoying their killer sound systems. I suspect its a very high percentage (pun unavoidable). ;)

I'd have to agree with you on that point, Doug. Life would be a lot simpler, a lot more stress free, probably a lot more enjoyable overall. All IMO of course. I just need a nice spot in the country, a big field, a patch of woods, and a couple solar panels and windmills to power my stereo and music equipment.:)

I wouldn't mind plowing through a few subdivisions either.;)

Wow, I had no idea it was like that there. I've always thought it was similar to Canada. I mean, you can go into just about any convenient shop and find rolling papers. Most of them will proudly display their large selection of regular papers and blunt papers.
Forgot to mention there is another huge shop (2 floors) down the street from my workplace called THC that sells hemp clothes, pipes, specialty bongs made by students in an art school nearby (yes, that's from their glass blowing classes) ,etc with a huge mj leaf as their sign in front of the shop. There are several other shops like this. I think we may have about 10 or so in total. It's common to see people in their 20's and 30's in the shop with their parents buying their pot smoking equipments.

I don't travel much that's why I had no idea the US was that strict about pot. I'm so used to seeing it everywhere here.

Accessories are perfectly legal (rolling papers are in fact in every convenience store), and there's certainly an abundance of shirts proudly displaying the leaf, but that's a far cry from walking down the street with a joint.

Serves the little jerk off right.

I used to smoke ALOT of weed. I mean ALOT. I don't anymore, but MOST of the folks that I grew up with that regularly do (ie every day) are stuck still in their little delusional little worlds.

It's not legal other than medically. And unless you have a true medical need, it shouldn't be. Cut the f#ckin righteous melodrama ****, it ain't going to be legalized.

And don't hand out the song and dance about how natural it is. I've heard it and sang it myself...

He wants to stand up? Deal with the consequences, which in this case won't amount to ****. Pre-trial intervention, six months probation, and expungement after probation. They should hit him with the possesion within 1000 feet, like the law in New Jersey. Smarmy little **** would get a minimum five years. Stand up for that...

Yeah, let's give every kid under 18 or 19 five years in maximum security prison to teach them a lesson. Screw all that "youthful mistake" or "the kid just did something dumb, he's a kid. he'll grow up" mushy bullcrap.

Exactly. THat'll teach him to stand up for what he believes in, misguided or not (who ISN'T misguided at 17?). Throw every wayward child who does something stupid in jail for 5 years, and I"m sure we'll have a great, law-abiding community.

Heck, and we also get the benefits of hearing less farts in public.

All those guys we throw in there will just quietly go "woossshh" or "shhhhff" when passing gas instead of making any noise.

    That's a plus!
