The Neverending (?) Music Trivia Thread

Whoever gives the correct answer first, gets to post the next question within 24 hours. Any era, any type of music, the winner gets to take the thread in any musical direction they want.

Simple enough?

Note: The Honor System is in play here. Anyone can jump to AMG, or a dozen other sites, and look up the answers, but that’s not in the spirit of the game…

Here’s the kick-off question…
Before Rod Stewart joined them and they became Faces, they were The Small Faces and they had one big hit in the U.S.

Name that hit…

What was the first popular song to use the now ever-so-common effect known as flanging?

I'm sure it can't be the answer (cause it wasn't "popular"), but my favorite example is "Tank" by EL&P off their 1st album.

    Good, tough question here...

It’s the electronic altering of a music signal, most commonly applied to a drum track. It can involve pitch change, distortion and other factors.

The ELP, I mentioned right off, is a great example. It’s applied to a "cymbal-roll" that sores back and forth between speakers to boot near the end of a fine drum solo.

If"Dad" has the album, give it a spin... u'll luv it. But NOT TOO LOUD as after the cymbal part it crashes into some flanged bass and floor tom that I’ve seen flex woofer cones (but they weren’t mine, so I thought it was pretty cool…

I've changed my mind. "Tomorrow Never Knows" is the first song recorded with the techniqe called "flanging" by the Beatles. It was used on the entire Revolver album so there are several songs that it could be using the question of first "popular song" ("Yellow Submarine" and "Eleanor Rigby" maybe since they were the A/B sides of the first single of the album).

The technique or effect of "flanging" was first used by Les Paul in the early 50 and he is given credit for inventing it, but it was the Beatles (specifically John Lenon) that gave it the name.

The one I was remembering was the same song as answer no. 1. However, after reading your post Shack, I realize you are probably right. The effect in Itchycoo Park just really blew me away and apparently made a stronger flange memory than the other examples. Revolver definately came before the Small Faces release. Good answer.

So Shack, unless anyone else has a more solid answer.....Tag, you're it!

OK...What is the longest song (in terms of min, and sec.) to reach #1 on the US rock and pop charts? **Bonus** - How long was it?

    shack.

The first one that came to mind was "You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone. That damn song ran for at least an hour and a half, or so it seemed.

On second thought, I will guess "American Pie" by Don Mclean. According to this cd insert I am looking at, the time was 8:27.

Joe, "American Pie" is a damn good guess. Since I am pretty sure it was a #1, I'll have to opt for longer than 8:27.

    So I'll go with:
    "In-A-Ga-Da-Da-Vi-Da" - Iron Butterfly (hope mis-hyphenation doesn't count off)
AM and even the normal FM airplay version was edited to about five minutes, but the full cut was 17+. FM would play the long version late nite or anytime a DJ needed to take a dump. I'm not sure it made it to #1, but it was very popular and drove the album to pretty decent sales.

If neither of these is the answer, I have a 7 minuter for round 2.
    More later,

That was quick - "American Pie" coming in at 8 min. 32 sec.

    It's all yours Joe.

    Way to go Joe...

You know as opposed to your humorous note on "You Light Up My Life", with which I agree, "American Pie" just doesn't seem that long... maybe just too busy singin' along... :)
A true piece of Folk-Rock "Americana" there...

I wasn't really sure if Pie was #1 but I thought is was a good shot. Shack 8:32 opposed to 8:27. Hmmmm, you must have the long version of Pie! Hey Jude was to be my next guess. It has to be close, time wise.

O.K. Here is the next one. The Beatles last concert was August 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park. What was the last song they played?

I think Im right......So I guess Ill ask my question, U dont have to answer it or guess at it until av-fan says im right or not, but here it is......

This is a new band, they started in a small town, people did not think that their band was good or was going to succeed at all because their lead singer was something, they were played on a radio station one day and people continuously kept requesting it on the local radio station. This song was featured in a movie recently. What band am i talking about?
