I'll ride money it will happen again, but there gonna check flags on there targets before they do. they might be mad, but there livelyhood depends on easy targets. US Flags will most likely be a no go for a hijack.

I don't understand why people on ships can't arm them selfs. They are asked to use water canons to their APG and AK47's, they are like here it is come and get it. Send 100 thugs out and 40 come back, next day fewer and fewer until they wise up.

Like this be a lesson to all of us, if they disarm us in this country, why wouldn't the thugs just come and get it?

I think we have the United Nations and their wonderful vision for the laws governing the international maritime shipping industry. The UN must be getting a cut of the pirate loot.

I believe that one of the reasons crews on ships haven't historically been armed, is that it discourages a mutiny. I know that may not be the case today, but old habits die hard; or maybe not with pirates...

There are a couple of problems with this from what I read. Supposedly the maritime insurance rates are significantly higher if there are armed guards on board. Secondly there are many country/ports that will not allow ships with armed security personel to enter.

I heard on Foxnews that some shipping lines are adding armed guards after they leave port, and removing them before docking at new port. Working in a Grey area for sure, but effective as the pirates know which ship do and who doesn't.

what do these guys have for a plan when they take over a ship? do they think they will sell the ship? do they want to trade hostages for cash? why can't we just give them whatever they want then as soon as all the crew is off the ship sink it? i don't see how this could ever end good for the pirates.

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/04/13/somalia.pirates.revenge/index.html?iref=newssearch

    Some extracts:
... "We have decided to kill U.S. and French sailors if they happen to be among our future hostages," ...
... "From now on, after the killings by the U.S. and France, we will add some harsher steps in our dealings with hostages, particularly American and French hostages," Nur told a journalist. ...

They sure do have a funny perspective on things:
... "The killing of our boys was aggression, and the U.S. will see what they get from their operation," he said.
And taking hostages is not aggression?!

The way I see it, the Navy killed 3 Somalian pirates. Now theyre good Somalian pirates. The only tragedy in all of this is that they didnt kill ALL those scumbags!

What kills me is that theyre acting like theyre just harmless small business people trying to earn a buck by hijacking ships and kidnapping the crews to be held for ransom. They were just minding their own business carrying out their own form of terrorism when the big bad American Navy came along and killed them. What a joke.

What bothers me is the news coverage of this whole incident. All I wanted to hear was that the Navy took care of the situation. The news is blowing it up to seem like the CIC just invaded Normandy and Omaha beaches.

My suggestion would be to arm a couple of freight vessels to the teeth and disguise the weapons and mercenaries aboard to appear like business as usual. Then wait for the pirates to make their move, and enjoy all the "Pink Mist",other pirates might just think twice about boarding any more ships ! AHRRRGGGG !!:D

I blame all this pirate activity on the failed policies of the Bush Adminstration. The real crime here is that the pirates weren't offerred safe passage to the US, Citienship, Social Security, Medical benefits, and no interest mortgages in California. Where is Nancy Pelosi when we need her?

We used to pay tribute to Barbary pirates; in fact, Payments in ransom and tribute to the privateering states amounted to 20 percent of United States government annual revenues in 1800..

It's time to find the all of the so called "mother ships" that these thugs (it's an insult to Jack Sparrow to call them pirates) operate off of and send them to the bottom of the ocean. No questions asked...no leniency offered…just swift justice.

In a time now long past, we would of just started sinking anything looking like a pirate vessel :D It's time to flag all the vessels in that region out of Israel and see how well that works for the pirates

Even the French picked up their weapons and took on the pirates. When the French come out of their hiding places with their big-boy (and big-girl too!) panties on, it's time to recognize there's a problem!

Francophobia aside, the article below (which happened today) is actually the fourth time the French have attacked the pirates. In the first operation, about a year ago, they paid the ransom and then pursued them into the desert with an assault helicopter to get it back, reportedly shooting out the engine of their escape vehicle from the air.
