Better think twice next time before you attack a bunch of American sailors!

I hope the pirates who went overboard are fish food. I think the men operating the ship are all US citizens and work for two or three different unions. At least thats what came across the TV news. They are also unarmed which seems hard to believe but the last thing they want is a running gun battle with pirates that have rocket launchers.

This was the first time a US flagged ship had been taken over in 200 years. Not a bad track record.

Appears it's not over yet. Looks like the pirates are holding the ship's captain hostage in their rescue boat. Hope it works out for him!! Sad state of affairs when UN "food ships" are hijacked!

Based on what has happened so far, I'm guessing the pirates will come out on the short end of this one. I hope the captain fares well...and that will be the best thing that can happen for the pirates. If he is killed I would think there will be a bunch of dead thugs in the very near future.

Absolutely fantastic that the sailors on that ship took it back. I'm going to guess among them there was heavy US military backgrounds, and the pirates had to be pretty stupid to think it was going to be an easy target. The first clue should be when a ship has "Alabama" in the name! Godspeed to the US Navy ships on the way. Best wishes to the captain for a speedy rescue and a safe return to freedom.

Those of you with military background; what will that deployment of ships and personnel be able to do with what seems to be a hostage situation?

I'm hoping for the best. But this Captain hostage thing doesn't look good for him. Certainly the Pirates are in big 'trouble' now. But I do hope the Captain gets out.

    Any thoughts on this? Strategies?

Have a bunch of ships around them and come up from below. They will be watching the ships. The ships can provide excellent surveillance, and also with the accuracy of modern weapons you may be able to pick off all the pirates at one time.

Don't bring a water cannon to a gun fight. If ships are traveling off the coast of Somalia, why not arm the crew or at least have some military protection on board?

At least France did something about it :)

    Freed by Force

The only ship to be freed by force was a French yacht liberated by French commandos in September with the death of one pirate and the capture of six others.

The EU’s anti-piracy fleet is reconsidering the positions of its five warships, a spokesman said this week. It’s using patrol planes to spot pirate ships and warn merchant vessels of areas to avoid, he said.

The U.S. Navy said this week that merchant ships should take steps to defend themselves, citing recent attacks that have been fought off using barbed wire, fire hoses or increasing speed to create a wake.

“What we have is a policy of prevention,” Reinhart said. “As merchant vessels we do not carry arms.”

International waters or not its time to blow a few of these a-holes out of the water instead of "warning ships to avoid them"
    ....................
    ......................

thats all I have to say on this topic without being too political ;)

Now what the F#CK do you think tactical nukes would do in this situation? Sure let's irradiate large tracts of perfectly healthy ecosystem to get rid of a few thousand jerkoffs. Your talking out of your ****...

No, an IFF system and routine patrols with modern conventional combat systems, with authorization to use deadly force, will do nicely.

Good for them. I hope they used very visual coercive means to get their point across...

I'm going to guess most ships have welding equipment on board. Several very diabolical things come to mind that you could do with welding equipment. Welding equipment, fire extinguishers and flare guns - McGuyver would be in heaven!

I was thinking about this some. I'm suprised that some soldier of fortune types, maybe under contract with Lloyds of London, havent gotten a good sized boat and are offering armed escort services. Such guys are usually very patriotic and have the means to acquire the type of weapons that responsible governments generally restrict to themselves. Given the situation over there and what they would be doing, 'doubtful if the governments would go after escorts for plying restricted weapons.

I feel for the captain being held hostage, but if everyone keeps **** footing with these "business man" style pirates
The pirates are businessmen, not suicidal jihadists,
there will be more if they know that we are even considering negotiations. My little 20 foot boat had radar. I could pick up a milk jug 300 yards away in calm water. You know these ships can do much better than that. Arm the ships. If a boat is approaching blow them up. Real simple. If a small boat is in distress send out the coast guard to deal with it. How these guys are able to get on board is just beyond me. A few semi auto shotguns would keep anyone that has approached the boat from making it on. They come over the rails they got shot. The headlines would read a little different. Also mega spot lights and a warning shot would deter anyone from getting close. If they continue blow them out of the water. I guess that is too simple:confused:

I'm amazed they haven't come from underneath the boat. Put a couple of explsoive trained Seals in the water. Attach a small, timed charge to the hull, let it rip a hole in the boat and rescue the captain as the boat sinks leaving the rest for fish food.

The great thing is 3 of the 4 will never have a chance to do that again. Thanks to our Navy and Navy Seals, excellent work. I do wonder what will happen with the one guy they took into custody.
