If I wasn't replacing it with other gear, then I would say you're 100% right.

Very true. In my case I've had hard times before and had to sell stuff for food, gas money, or rent. It sucked at the time, but I've learned that everything is cyclical and I'll get the same or better again.

Of course that's easy for me to say as I seem to stay in mid-fi heaven. :D

I probably wouldn't sell those either.

Yeah, the M-5090 is a brute. With finesse. I have much more powerful amps (wattage-wise) that I couldn't use in the application I use it in. They won't do low impedance like this thing will.

I thought I'd never sell my Cornies (Klipsch Cornwalls) until a pair of Altec Valencias made themselves available... so I tend to the "never say never" school. But...

    I don't think I'll ever sell these:

EICO HF-81 (even though it has some background hum that I've never tracked down)
    Sherwood S-2000 and S-3000 tuners

    Polk Monitor 7As
    Yamaha CA-610II
(bought the two above mentioned items -- OK technically three -- new and plan to have them for the duration)

Altec 604Bs (still need XOs and cabinets for them, though)
    Allison Ones (dump find)
    ads L-710s (ditto)

    Pioneer RT-909 R2R (I haven't bonded with my ReVox A77 yet)

If I am totally broke, I'll sell anything except family, friends, my soul and my integrity.

If God willing, I'll keep a few power amps. :)

    Technics SE-A3
    Onkyo Grand Integra M-510
    Onkyo Grand Integra M-508
    Harman Kardon Citation 7.1
    Pioneer Elite M-90, M-91 and A-91D
    B&K Sonata M-200 Mono
Denon POA-3000 (just bought it but has issues so I am trying to fix it or return it to seller)
    Mark Levinson ML-335
    Luxman M-05

I still have a bunch more amps (rotel, parasound, etc), preamps and speakers that are all disposable for better stuff or for CASH.

Actually I've got marbles... they come in very handy for loosely "capping" test tubes that need to be incubated at 100 degrees C for certain biochemical assays (the classic thiobarbituric acid assay* for sialic acids comes to mind). I keep a bag in my desk drawer at work, just in case...

    Audio, everything has a price.

That said, there are a couple of things that I probably will not part with....

    2.3tl's....sentimental.
VPI Scoutmaster, I couldn't afford to upgrade.
BDT phono stage...a Gary Dodd custom built affair
Heathkit W5M's...rebuilt by Gary and Charlie Cocci thanks to Russman, my brother from another mother.

The Dodd gear is one-off stuff that I couldn't replace.....

Anything else, like I said, has a price. Much as I love the Quads, I can always bag another pair.

Here are some things that I have sold that DEEPLY regret:

    AR9's
    CJ MV-75A1
    Classe Model 25 (MONSTER AMP)
Sunfire tube pre (cool factor was off the scale)

    BDT

Maybe...but the stuff that I really have a sentimental attachment to (for whatever stupid reason) would probably only get me enough to buy a MickeyD happy meal and a couple of tanks of gas if I had to sell them. I doubt if I will ever be so broke that has to happen.

oy, I forgot my Quads! You're right, though, they are replaceable, albeit at a price.

The EICO AF-4 and HFT-90 that have been in my family since they were new... not so 'replaceable'. I forgot those, too.

I've given this some consideration now. If replacement cost is not a factor, I can let almost anything go and get something else that I would enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I would be very, very disapointed to give up my CRS+'s, my A/D/S L9e's, my LS-90s, or any of my NAD gear, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't get too attached to any material goods.

Oh, and, the HSU and SVS subs would be hard to let go too, but they are probably the easiest pieces to replace.

    Still, a great thought-provoking thread.

Mr. Hardy reminded me of one other piece. My Eico HF-89. That would be hard to replace if I did sell it.

I concur, my first good speaker were also KLH 6s...still have them. No chance of a sale. I've also kept my JBL 4413 Studio Monitors for almost 20 years. My first BIG sound speaker. Other than those, as some one said, most things are replaceable.

Other than my old Victrolla it is all up for grabs when the right replacement comes along. Well, maybe except for my Manley preamp, I've grown attached to it.

Theres too much to cry over, all these years, but as for right now,my Legacy Focus 20/20 aren't going anywhere. They do everything I ask of them, and then some.Over the years, new purchases were financed partialy by the sale of older stuff.I would most likely have a list similiar to Georges if I kept everything.Kinda like all those old cars you wish you never let go,that are worth a small fortune today.

    My Allison Four speakers...

Hey, that's my line. Was running through this thread knowing that my Fours were the only things that I was going to list.

According to a tech from the original Allison factory, one of my speakers has the LAST replacement woofer they ever sold. I called them as they were closing down because my magnet had come off the basket (glue let go). He said to hold on while he went searching. He came back on and said, "Dude, you got the last one ever from this factory."
