I would recommend those doing home theater to fore-go the entire center channel process...very few designs are adequate, in fact you might opt for a single rear channel speaker and use it for your center.
I personally use a 2.0 system but have built many 4.1 systems. As you move up the chain with speakers you will find that some designs are simply too revealing for cinema use or sound too muted or colored. It's a fine line. -
I purchased my LSi speakers with the intent of getting rid of that 'mushy' sound I was getting out of my DVDs with the Polk RM series. I wanted more detail and sound quality at higher volume levels. I certainly have crisp, detailed sound now from my Lsi's and Bluray combination that makes me happy I went down this road.
As a side benefit I found early on that the LSis did great things with music as was evident when I couldnt stop listening to Louis Armstrong's "What a wonderful world" when I finally got my Rotel 1080 hooked up to them ... and that was with my crappy Sony DVD player as a CD player as well.

Some of us, like myself, do not have the room to accomodate two seperate systems.
I understand that having them seperate is best and in 5-10 years Im sure I will get a chance to purchase a home with additional rooms to allow for this. But for now Ill have to live with the 2-Ch/HT hybrid mix.

My system is a dual purpose rig and I've gone through various stages of development. I wouldn't put anything in the rig that couldn't pass the music first test, but they need to be extremely dynamic HT speaks too, for my satisfaction.
In my travels, I found music first speakers to not be as good as theater as very dynamic theater speakers. I noticed a few things about theater speakers that music speakers simply do not do. I hate it 2 as I would really like to keep my speakers I own now but they simply do not cut it for me with movies only due to the lack of the last word in dynamic range. Even with my last amp RMB1095, I always felt for movies I was missing something. Detail and clarity was never a question. I felt in a lot of ways they where perfectly detailed and I could hear everything, even light details in the background came through , but when it was time to get busy, they kinda hung out and did a little.
Music on the other hand which still puzzles me, is explosive and dynamic. A good jazz or classic piece explodes with clarity and soft to high dynamics are amazing. I don't get it. I once felt as you do. I assumed very high quality music speakers would perform theater better then theater speakers. I am learning I was wrong.

You've listened to way more rigs than I have and can probably name the culprits. However, I've heard a few that can handle the subtlety of the softest jazz and still handle the dynamic transients of HT without a hiccup. That's why you have to listen. I was using RTis and quite happy with them for HT and just ok with them for music. I was headed for a Danny Ritchie design, his GR Research kit speakers, until I heard SDAs. A buddy has a matched 5pc AV-2 rig that's multipurpose which I've always been impressed with for both applications. I probably would have gotten one of his larger designs, but fate stepped in. Then I forgot about them.
yes I agree with you on the Rti thing. They are truly great for theater but for music I want a lot more.
I have found my double duty speakers in the Definitive Technology Mythos St series. They are completely kick **** for both Duties. If I had 2 I would use them in a dedicated 2 channel rig or a dedicated theater rig. I feel this is one of those speakers that can do no wrong and so many things right. I'm so excited to get them. I got to get off my **** and get my Dynaudio rig sold. I have not pushed to move them. I gotta get them on the gon and ebay.

Its a great thing when you can find a speaker that can do both.
I also agree on the RTi thing for HT and not Music.

Gotta disagree on the RTi /= music.
I've got my RTiA3s dialed in with some really nice system synergy for music.
In Pure Direct with my external amp and sub (AQ ICs and Kimber speaker cables) - wow...clean, clear, dynamic, spacious, responsive.
But then again, admittedly I'm in the ground top sirloin section - not the prime filet mignon....;)

I went with my Mythos ST for primarily HT duty downstairs, but they are great for music as well, well at least for entertaining and filling the downstairs with very full and detailed music. Upstairs I started with my Paradigm Studio 100's and 690 upstairs for more DVD-A and SACD listening along with some HT duty.

I used mostly movie material to audition speakers, but I was also looking at receivers at the same time. I think that making good use of my receiver makes a huge differnece when going from movies to music.
