Um, no. In fact, most of the ship commanders I worked with ordered ships crew to salute. Enforcement in common areas was difficult because sailors did not have any readily available identification to know when to salute. But ever time I walked in to Radar 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, the computer room or CIC, I was saluted and greeted. Go ahead, get all salty, I don't care.

Why is it all the military types get so bent out of shape about this stuff? Like I'm lying or something?

Well, if a commander (who may be the captain on a smaller ship) had ordered us to salute a civilian worker aboard ship, I imagine that would have gone down something like this:

"Uh .... excuse me sir. My mom is a civilian and doesn't wear a uniform."

"That's fine, Petty Office MBBL. But what's your point ?"

"Well, sir, I don't plan on f**king saluting her, either".

Not saying you're lying at all. If that's the state of the modern Navy, though, then ..... :(

Oh, well. There's always poles in the hole and DIW.

CP, I'm curious. What job did you do in the Navy, given your lack of hearing?(your sig says you were born deaf, just wondering how you dealt with basic training, and such)

Not in that Navy :D Im sailor another way not actual U.S Sailor. If i was hearing, id serve in military
I am 100% BORN DEAF and No I am not kidding! :D Why am I here? My wife's hearing! :p

I can tell you for sure the Marines are the elite of all services. The only thing that comes close and above would be Seals and I have spent time on the ground working with them. I spent 8yrs in and I can tell you for sure I have never saluted a civilian, unless youre talking about civilians in uniform which would be Airforce :D. I have respect for the Navy, I've spent 1.5 yrs on the USS Essex with the 15th MEU. To me ship life was great in Port but a damn prison when you're afloat. Other than standing watch, drills, cooking, playing spades, I can say they do work, but anything else physical; nothing, just doesnt happen for them. Marines is a department of the Navy as I think everyone knows. Basically they are just our ride to shore. Been on few beach landings via LCAC and drop ins via C130 so when I say I've seen it all, trust me I have. Semper Fi John. To those who serve now and have served, my sincere thanks. I appreciate all branches, the Corps just takes it up a notch and is definitely a disciplined branch.

Ahh, aren't tags cute? And I'm the one that gets banned, right? Fricking keyboard commandos.

For those of you who were never in a unit that had the luxury of being on a ship assigned to experimental duty, you will never know what it's like to have a civilian like me out rank you. Normally, I would be at the level of a high NCO but due to my college degree, I warranted higher status.

When you are in a unit that is performing experimental or testing duty, you get the luxury of working with civilian contractors because the armed forces don't let the smart ones be grunts. However, if you are a civilian and on a ship or embedded in a unit that is testing new equipment, you are part of that unit and afforded all of the accommodations of your equivalent rank. If you were in a formal setting like a debriefing and you did not respect the civilian equivalent rank, you'd be in trouble. I guarantee it.

Marines are sailors. So are SEALS. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. I'd rather be Air Force or Navy, they are the ones with the REALLY cool toys! Then again, the Coasties get to shoot at drug runners and board pirate vessels. Arr, ye matey!

Coolest thing I ever saw was walking on to the first National Security Cutter I was involved with after the crew took possession. I was talking to the commander of the ship and his XO 'cause they were in my lab not 3 weeks before getting trained on the systems for their new, state of the art ship. They took us down to the officer deck and showed us how they were settling in. When we came to the ship's commander's quarters, he had a Jolly Roger hanging in his quarters. That was awesome!

And lastly, since those of you who are jarheads can't get it through your thick skulls, I haven't uttered a disparaging remark about the Marines at all. I've only spoken the truth and only Marines get bent out of shape about it. I've been around all kinds of military and while you may think the Navy guys are cream puffs, they have the baddest weapons and there is not a place on this planet that they can't project force. Not even space and they don't have to leave the water to do it. But some of the brightest minds in the military are floating around on those ships and sneaking around in submarines under the surface of the ocean.

Besides, most Navy, Air Force and Army will stand by and watch Marines play games like "Bonk Bonk" (if you're a jarhead, you know what it is.) and shake their heads and say things like " 'effin' jarheads." The Coasties don't hang around with the rest of the military and I don't blame them. But the Coasties...yeah, 3rd largest Navy in the world and now that they can integrate with the U.S. Navy and participate in battle groups, they are also the second most powerful. Bad bunch of dudes those Coasties. Don't think so? Put a Marine on a helicopter, fly him in to an arctic storm, hand him a snorkel, some diving fins and goggles and tell him to jump in and look for survivors.

Remember on Top Gun where they introduced that Kelly McGillis character and told them that she's a civillian contractor, so you do not salute her...it's in the movies so it must be real, right?

John, I don't know who ran that ship, but civilians are not saluted unless you're the president. I'm not calling you a liar, I'm just stating how things work, the fact that this appears to conflict with your personal experience I can't comment on.

We have ALOT of service history in our family, so this is something I know about, at least in terms of how things SHOULD work. A civilian is typically granted some type of status (not a rank, but a status) that fits them in the organizational structure.

Basically, as a civilian you CAN outrank (sorta, even though you don't have an official military ranking) the servicemen around you, and you CAN boss them around and give orders, and they have to listen to you. However, that's where it stops. An enlisted man does not salute a civilian, period.

Which branch of service is the best again?

I can't believe that anyone can call one branch better than the other, each one serves its purpose. That's called serving it's country, the USA.

I also get a crack out of civilians who don't know what the hell they are talking about. A civilian always out ranks NCO's.

BTW, you DO NOT salute civilians. You salute military personal wearing the appropriate military attire, period.

When testing with new weapons systems loads and guidance systems, the engineers ran the CIC instead of the naval personnel. The naval personnel were there to watch and learn and the ranking civilian, i.e. project manager on site, was treated as an XO and saluted as an XO when entering or leaving the bridge. At that point, the engineering staff of ship was embedded in the unit and part of the chain of command. It works differently under those situations. But again, if you haven't been in the situation, you wouldn't know. Then again, not many people are put in that situation because of security concerns.

When I was in charge, I was doing logistical stuff like loading and installing computer systems on the ships. I was given ships detail crews to move equipment and do installations. Those people were told by the Senior Chief that I was in charge until I released them from duty. I gave an enlisted dude a task and he did not acknowledge me and just walked away. Senior Chief was on him like white on rice and chewed him out. He told the detail that I was the ranking officer for them until further notice and afforded all acknowledgment of rank. I was saluted, yes sir'ed, no sir'ed and so on until i was done what needed to be done. I gave them a chance to sit down and rest for 5 minutes before handing them over.

Tell me civilians aren't saluted all you want, I don't care. My experience was different but apparently quite unique.

Agreed 100%. Like I said I did 8yrs and never saluted a civilian ever. Those equivalent ranks would be of GS paygrade. Im a Gov contractor now, with GS 14E ID card. I dont rate salute. Only those of appropiate rank and in uniform rate. Hell you wont even get a salute if youre an officer out of uniform so I dont know where you're getting this info from. Kudos to you for serving with every branch. Wow........pencil pushing doesnt require allot.;)

What does this have to do with anything. What you describe would work out about as well as dropping a bunch of Coast Guard guys in the desert, telling them to take an enemy airfield and secure the surrounded position for 3 days until the army can fly all their gear in.

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Coast Guard (hell while we are at it Merchant Marines) they all serve a purpose and have specific missions. Is there some overlap, yes. But these comments saying this branch is superior to that branch becuase it has "cooler" weapons is very stupid and immature.

Really, this is as foolish as: Who is more bad ****, Delta, SEAL, AFSOC or RECON. Well it depends on what the mission is. They all have different purposes, and they would all suck if the mission is to build a road in the jungles of South Vietnam or an air strip on some little island in the South Pacific

Um, I was trying to illustrate the same point you just made. Just because one branch does something and everyone says it's tough doesn't mean that what other branches do isn't tough as well. Everything requires training.

I was in the service (Navy) and everyone serves his/her purpose. There is no "I" in team and one individual is not going to win anything all by himself unless......you do a tv show like this or you're Rambo.

    COMBAT MISSIONS (aired in 2002):
From the producer of Eco-challenge and Survivor comes a reality competition program designed exclusively for America's elite warriors. Delta Force, Green Beret, Marine Recon, Navy SEALS, Police SWAT, and CIA Special Operations are brought together to compete in a contest of combat readiness. These military and law enforcement officers are known to be the best of the best. Guess who won, a Swat officer by the name of Dexter Fletcher. Just goes to show that even with all the advanced military training available, a "civilian" came out on top at the end of the show.

I was on a carrier (CVN-70) for a part of my active duty and the Marines there were for security and guarding the sensitive areas of the ship. We were in port and had a mock invasion by a SEAL team and they were onboard in less than 5 minutes and took the XO hostage. Not one peson even knew till the XO ended the exercise. There were Marines all over the place and not one saw or heard anything. All I can say is I am glad it was not my unit as they were training like crazy 6 days a week and they all had leave cancelled till the XO deemed they were "ready". As far as saluting a civilian I never saw it happen and I never did it either. During the first 3 months at a duty station in the Navy you get mess duty as a kinda of right of passage. I was lucky enough to get the chiefs mess and officers mess which is where the civilian contractors ate as well. Lets just say the only time I saw anything like it was when the XO or CO came on deck and they were announced and saluted by all including civilians.

Since I'm the only one that mentioned every branch, I gonna go ahead and assume you are referring to and call you a jackass. You can shove your smiley where the sun don't shine too. I have never been enlisted in any branch of the military. I passed the Marine test entirely too easily and decided it wasn't for me and I'd waste my time there. The Air Force wasn't recruiting at the time, the Army test was equally as easy as the Marine test and the Navy test was not so easy but I passed in the 90% range and they told me that I would be better off going to college instead of joining the Navy. I know, go ahead and tell me my recruiter should be court marshaled and all this other military bravado. I don't care.

I worked for government contractors. I worked on many projects, all of them sensitive and classified. Many will never be declassified. Well except for the work on the weather radar we did with NASA. That never really was classified except for the radar equipment we used to make it.

So yeah, pencil pusher, maybe. If it's supposed to be an insult, maybe in your small minded world. See 'cause of guys like me, grunts like you were able to use the weapons, equipment and vehicles that you did to keep your butt alive so you could come back and call me a pencil pusher. Good deal.

And please, pencil pushing doesn't require "allot"? Maybe you should learn proper English and get a grasp on basic vocabulary before you try to insult a "pencil pusher".

I have worked under a civilian base employee before. Not a problem.
There was one in charge of the radar, tacan, and the two way communications
gear for the USMC air station I worked at.
They got respect, but they did NOT get salutes.
I never was on a ship, so protocol at sea was something I never had to mess with.
I have given a lot of squids a hard time, but like all other enlisted men,
I can respect what they do.
