As I said earlier...I have two grandfathers that were in the Navy...and I already knew this one to be correct before this thread was posted. Apparently I'm wrong though.
According to Caligula this is in reference to some college fraternity? Yet it's about sailors? I don't get it. I'm thinking of something else...because I know YITBOS is a Naval expression. The nirvana inducer-

They don't like to admit it but they are sailors too.
The Marines are the Navy's ground force, they aren't a separate branch of the military, even though most people think they are. The 4 branches of the military are Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
The Marines say they are the first in, makin' it easy for the army and so on and forth. Most Navy guys refer to the Marines as targets because they are the first in. In fact, a friend of mine from my old job was a submariner and his son wanted to go be a Marine. One night, after a particularly festive draining of a bottle of Jack, he told his son that he was an idiot and he should go in the Navy or the Air Farce and make something of himself instead of going to the Marines to be an "'effin' target".
I guess that's what I get for 12 years of dealing with personnel from literally every branch of the military. I think the only reason I was able to stand it for so long was that my civilian status had me out ranking all enlisted and come commissioned. They had to salute me. Whether I liked it or not.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

the only civilian getting a salute is the commander in chief... even the sec/def does not rate one. curious as to your civilian job if they saluted you. as to the derogatory comments, the MARINE CORPS is the ONLY self sustaining branch of our nations armed forces, we have our own air force (7th largest in the world) ground forces, amphibious assault capability without need for naval support, Airborne and special forces units., further my beloved CORPS can get there faster and hit harder than any military force on earth...
And if the navy should ever gaze upon Heaven's scenes
they shall find the gates are guarded by the UNITED STATES MARINESThe Gear... Cry me a river.
When at sea, on a Naval ship, each civilian gets assigned a rank. If you are a project manager or manager of your particular task group (I was project lead for on site IT support) you get assigned a rank equivalent to at least a lieutenant. On board ship, I was saluted and made way for. Obviously, being a Marine, you wouldn't know that.
And being a Marine, I can forgive the fact that you think that I have made derogatory comments when in fact, I did not. I only related others comments.
And again, the Marines are NOT a branch of the military. All of the operations, all of their funding and literally all of everything comes out of the Navy budget. They are branch of the Navy. Believe me, I worked as a government contractor for a long time. Did work for the Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, NASA and even, yes, the Marines. The Marine projects by the way? They were managed by Navy project engineers, not Marines. We never saw a Marine until it was time to try to train them on how to use the equipment that they bought.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Civilian rank ? Yeah ....... $ocksucker.
Anyone caught saluting a civilian would have been met with a "What the #uck are you doing ?".Jstas wrote:They are branch of the Navy.
Actually, it would be more correct to say they are a Department of the Navy.

Please refrain from further desparaging remarks about the Corps as you never know where a Marine sniper may be hiding...:p
j/k about the sniper
Ummm...that's because the JCS advise the President on National Defense and the Coast Guard is under Homeland Security. Two different roles. National Defense is projected outwards. Also, the original JCS did not include the Marines. The Navy doesn't represent the Coast Guard. The CG is not represented by the JCS because they are considered Homeland Security.
And again, as much as you want to believe it, the Marines are NOT a branch of the military. They are a branch of the Navy. The Navy IS a branch of the military.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Um, no. In fact, most of the ship commanders I worked with ordered ships crew to salute. Enforcement in common areas was difficult because sailors did not have any readily available identification to know when to salute. But ever time I walked in to Radar 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, the computer room or CIC, I was saluted and greeted. Go ahead, get all salty, I don't care.
Why is it all the military types get so bent out of shape about this stuff? Like I'm lying or something?Expert Moron Extraordinaire

CP, I'm curious. What job did you do in the Navy, given your lack of hearing?(your sig says you were born deaf, just wondering how you dealt with basic training, and such)
