Oh gosh, don't say that! I need encouraging words!

But, I suppose I'd have to reluctantly agree and say yes, it seems as though I'll be following your footsteps. Or at least taking a fairly parallel set.

I'm a Senior Research Analyst at a data publication firm, focused on publicly traded REITs, and other commercial RE companies. I basically spend all day helping clients automating spreadsheets to decide who to invest in, how to rate a company, peer comp analysis, etc.

I literally learn something new everyday at work, which is why it is still mildly enjoyable...

I am a service consultant at a Cadillac Dealer. Since this thread came up I've been asking all my customers what they do for a living and two stood out and actually apply to the forum.

One client works for a vinyl record company very close to my dealership. She says they are so busy they are looking for larger facilities. When she returned to pick up her Escalade she laid some samples on my desk including The Killers' Sam's Town limited edition picture disc lp (with fold-out poster)and Godsmack's Godsmack. Both brand new and sealed in original packaging. Not bad...I'm going to have to put the old vintage Kenwood turntable back into service.

Next up is a kid who works for a large consumer electronics company in one of their warehouses. Looks like I'll be getting a high-end dvd/sacd single player for around $800.00 or so. Sweet...

I hope GM can hang on till I finish my rig with a TV and some other goodies from this connection!;)

IT guy... Working for Wise Potato Chips (www.wisesnacks.com). Our entire operation is based out of this one location, so I'm responsible for supporting everything from run of the mill office PCs to the specialised systems they use for monitoring moisture and oil levels in the chips.

I also stand in for the guy who makes sure each bag gets a good crushing before it's sent out.

Also working part-time at a local school district as an after-hours network ninja. Pulling cable, rebuilding PCs, doing stuff that can't be done while class is in session.

In my spare time, I fix PCs for local folks... usually people from work.

I'm also a practicing magician. I'm great at making beer disappear.

I can tell you from personal experience that much of what you hear about the economy and education is hype. I've got friends with Masters Degrees in Engineering and Comp Science who companies don't care to employ because they can get a guy in India for 5-10K to do their jobs. And if you have a Ph.D. in any field but an economic-business, Law, or Medical related field, most Americans think you're the most useless being on earth. When we talk of Education...just 'what' does that mean? A Ph.D. can't even teach in the public school system because he/she's considered incompetent with regards to having any 'real' Education background. And then there are my friends in Physics who can't find any work?

I always chuckle when I hear about Education. Believe me there are more than enough scholars and scientists in this country and very little respect for them in the Economic and business community. Instead we value those talking heads about the Market and Economy, almost ALL of whom have been wrong, wrong, wrong, about this economy--those guys are practical, have experience in the 'real' world! Ha, ha!

Let America get serious about employing its vast intellectual force and watch something real happen!

I work directly for the production manager at my place of employment. I make his life easy, as I know what work needs to be done and I do it. He is a good guy to work for. I frankly wouldn't want his job.

I'm also the only guy working there, who does my job (welding inspector), so I really can't count on someone else doing my work. Anyway I like my work and I have a lot of flexability on time off.
