I think now the next mod is to get a little more oomph to the RTI A9s via a more powerful amp. I can tell they are struggling to keep up with the new sub at higher levels. I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 250-350 WPC would do nicely. This room is very large, even though it doesnt look like it, and opens up into a kitchen and has a 25' ceiling! THe SVS still pounds it out in this big of an area....wonder what two would be like....uh oh here comes my wife...better not let her read any of this.........;)

Try 525 wpc on the 9s, I put a D-Sonic Magnum 1000S on mine, very nice amp, rather inexpensive and sounds very good. If its too much coin, then perhaps a Sunfire, Parasound, Rotel, something in that neighborhood, congrats on the beast. Very nice looking setup btw.

Nice looking little amps...may have to consider them. I am really looking to a nice used Carver @ 385/wpc. Right now, that will have to wait until I can save up some more cash. I cant believe my wife OK'd the SVS sub purchase, so I better not push my luck right now.

Can you clarify this part of your quote:
"REW is your friend and once you tame the peak/s and hopefully you have just one and use the 1 filter PEQ built into the sub you will be really surprised.

    Thanks!

Room EQ Wizard will help you find best placement, distance and phase sttings for your sub by showing you peaks and dips. Once you have found the best location that gets your bass freq response as flat as possible you will still be left with peaks. Ideally you want to bring dips up by moving your sub as you can't raise dips with an EQ or at least shouldn't. Your SVS has 1 filter built into the amp plate that will allow you to lower a peak. If you have say 3 nasty peaks they you would be better off with something like a BFD 1124P.

Here is an example, ignore how nasty this looks but focus on the 27hz peak in the before and look at 27 hz in the after.

Here is the link to the before graph, seems you can not add a picture if you have it somewhere else on CP. http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showpost.php?p=948823&postcount=4

I am just shocked how much better this sub has made my whole system sound....the dynamics have completely changed. Everything from music to home theatre are dramatically different.

I have had the sub for about a week now and cant wait to get home at night to listen to some music or watch a good movie.

I still need to tweak the settings a little, but I really like the overall performance of this thing. I have a feeling that I am going to need to upgrade the electrical circuit that my system is on...when playing really loud it will make the lights dim on bass drum notes and really low bass notes. I am contemplating upgrading that circuit to a 20 amp circuit.

My wife has even warmed up to it calling a very pretty piece of furniture that can shake the house!:D

You can't get a better testimonial than that!!

When the lights dim:eek: I would say that it's time to upgrade the circuit or at least try to spread the load out on a couple circuits.

Sounds like you have the WAF conquered looks like you're in like Flynn for future upgrades;)

I got my pb 13 ultra the other day. It sounds great, I can't believe how smooth it sounds, and how much bass it puts out at 20hz and under. I have made it pop a few times though by making the driver come out to much. The incredible hulk scene where they shoot the hulk with the big soundwave cannons, owns the ultra. When the first 2 waves of bass comes through it, the sub pops on both of them. It does it at moderate levels. No other movie or music has made it do this.

One guy in the AVS forum said that scene has some very strong 10hz bass, and that it would do that to almost any sub. I am the only one that has mentioned the ultra doing this though. I don't have any experience with a home theater sub of this caliber, and don't know if something is wrong with it or not.

If anyone else has an ultra and the incredible hulk movie, could you try out that scene for me, a little below reference level, and see if your ultra does the same. Right now my ultra is set about 5 db hot.

Okay... this is one of those moments where I want to say "Here's your sign." You do realize that having your sub 5dB hot pretty much guarantees a quick death if you put it anywhere near reference level, right? No wonder you're pushing the driver to overexcursion.

Yeah, that scene has some serious 10Hz bass... but the subsonic filter on your Ultra should be keeping it at a tame enough level to prevent bottoming of the driver due to just that. I'm running an older 20-39CS+ with the 12.3 driver, and at -5 from reference, I saw the clip light on my amp flicker but didn't bottom the driver. I'm running a subsonic filter at about 16Hz, but I'm running my sub at the same level as my other channels, equalized for the room with Audyssey MultEQ XT.

So the short answer is: The only thing wrong with your sub is that you're running it 5dB hotter than the other channels and expecting it to keep up. To put things in perspective, you should realize that adding a second identical sub would only give you an effective 3dB more headroom, so what you're doing by asking it to run 5dB hot is basically asking it to do the work of three subwoofers.

+5dB is extremely hot. Is it possible that the sub is too small for the room? I am not familiar with SVS PB 13 Ultra, but I can't imagine running any sub at +5 dB in most setup. Just as a comparison, I am running Velodyne DD-15, and for my setup, I am running +1 dB, and it rattles the windows if I play it a few dB close to reference. My room is 18' by 35'
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I was recently looking at the Epik subs spec sheets and was suprised to see that a speaker cone is made from kevlar impregnated paper-pulp. I know kevlar is strong, but a paper cone? Maybe it's just my rookie skepticism, but paper? Is this durable? I thought most cones these days were injection molded plastic or other durable materials. Should we be concerned about life expectency of paper. What about humidity levels affecting performance then?
