Well, I bit the bullit and just ordered a new SVS PB13 Ultra in rosewood! I am really anxious to get it and try it out. My wife is gonna kill me when she finds out, but hey...it's only money right. Hoping someone hear can chime and give their opinion on this. I am sure it will work fine, but just looking to justify my new purchase!:D

Is this an upgrade from the Klipsch? I think you are going to be pleasantly suprised, let alone have the crap scared out of you. Congrats on the purchase!

thsmith, speakergeek and I own this sub (there are a few others here too). It's a great choice, extremely high output, low extention and outstanding sound quality. Welcome to the club. Both Tracy and I replaced, at least, duals, speakergeek (croseiv) has dual U13s. You won't be disappointed and your enthusiasm will overcome the deathstare you'll get from the wife ;).

I wanted two initially, but had to spread it out over a year, buying one and then another, so the wife wouldn't leave me....:D I love the Ultra and haven't been happier with an electronics purchase.

To even consider needing 2 you most have a room greater than 6kcf. I have JUST 1 in my 4200 +1800cf room.

Just don't need anything else. I love how I do not feel the need to tweak to get more out of it and I run in the 20hz mode. SOmeday I might get around to trying 15hz.

Anyone have any experience with the SVS PB12-NSD?

That's the sub that I'm really leaning towards for my HT setup. With a 325 watt BASH amp and a 12" driver, with extension down to 18 hz +/- 3dB, it seems like a hard sub to beat in it's price point of about 665 shipped.

    Anyone here tried one before?

I'm not going to be getting a new sub for a while though either way...just looking at some prospective future upgrades. A sub for the HT setup won't be coming around until I've got the rest of my HT speakers, and have the 2 ch. rig set up. Probably not until early next year, so it's going to be a little while yet.

That's another option I've been considering. A new sub won't be coming along for a while yet, so I've still got some time to decide. I still have to get my RTi setup for the HT, and I'm also in the midst of setting up a 2 ch. rig, so the sub won't be coming along until after that. Probably not until the middle of next year or so. The PB12 Plus is definitely another option, though it does cost about 400-500 more IIRC. I might be able to swing that though, time will tell.

If $600 is your budget the SVS12NSD is hard to beat, but definitely research it when you get close. You really can't go wrong with either SVS or Hsu at those pricepoints. ED, Epik and Outlaw are other considerations. For a first quality sub any of them are going to be stellar performers.

That's probably what I'll end up getting. The PB-12 Ultra looks like a damn nice sub, but I don't really want to spend that much on a sub yet. It's about 500 dollars more than the PB12-NSD, so that's a bit above my price range really.

I'll eventually upgrade to a PB13-Ultra, or something else in that price range anyway. The PB12-NSD should fulfill all of my needs for the time being. It has extension down to 18hz, and has plenty of power to pressurize the room. It's going to be leaps and bounds better than the 8" 75 watt Pioneer sub I'm using right now.

I haven't really looked at the HSU's much yet, though I've heard a lot of good things about them. I'll have to look into them some more. I've been considering some of the new Epiks as well, namely the Vanquish and the Sentinel. They cost a little bit more than the PB12NSD, but they look like they're some badass subs.

I haven't really looked at the Outlaws or the ED's much either. The Outlaw LFM-1 EX looks like a pretty nice sub for the price. The ED A7S-450 doesn't look to bad either, though it's physical size may be a bit large for my space.

Any recommendations on a good Velodyne in the 700ish range?

You get quite alot of sub from ED. I've never heard one, but I have a friend that's tried their high end offerings (A7-900 and A7-650(?) towers) and thinks they are competitive with subs at and above their pricepoint). Their lower and midline subs, I'm not sure about. I'm sure they go loud and low though. Epik's line is intriguing. His Vanquish is aimed right at SVS SB12Plus and Velo's SPL series and he claims his Sentinel is louder at 20hz than the former 15" Knight. Both could be a steal at their pricepoint, but the jury is still out. Outlaw's subs should perform similarly to the Hsu 3.2 and 3.3 for slightly less money. I'm still partial to SVS, but I'd take a long look at Epik. The higher end Velo's are very musical and don't lack output, but at $700 you're looking at an earlier rev or used.

Those would both fit my price range I suppose, but neither of them are really appealing to me that much. The things are uglier than sin IMO for starters...lol

Neither of them can hit below 20 hz, or even lower than 23 hz for that matter. If I'm paying that much for a sub, I want sub-sonic frequencies. The SPL-5000R looks like the better of the two...but...It's still not really appealing to me.

I might try Velodyne someday, but if I do it'll be in the future when I can afford one of their better offerings. I'm not going to be able to fulfill my requirements with Velo unless I spend roughly twice the cost of the PB12-NSD from the looks of it.

I'm sure they're still great subs, but from everything I've seen I think the SVS is where I want to go.:)

Received the new SVS Ultra 13 last night. You better higher some friends to help you unpack this things because it is heavy....155 lbs!!

Got everything hooked up, flipped the power switch and began the tedious process of getting it dialed in for optimal performance. After an hour of tweeking all I can say is WOW, this thing is impressive. At first I was a little disappointed at the output, but after moving it around a little and playing with different settings, I think it is dialed and it is amazing how low this thing can go... I'll get some pictures up later!

REW is your friend and once you tame the peak/s and hopefully you have just one and use the 1 filter PEQ built into the sub you will be really surprised.

I started out with 20hz tuning and have not felt the need to try any other settings.

Once the peak/s are tamed and you run your AVR speaker calibration you will find that the sub and mains will match perfectly wrt db levels.

Since I have the SDA-1Cs I do not use the sub for music although the PB13U does a great job its just overkill with the 1Cs. In HT mode, batten down the hatches, and thats wit the sub level matched with the mains, no need for a 3 db bump or house curve, that is reserved for less capable subs IMO...

That's pretty much the concensus. 2 channel = no sub, HT plus multi-channel SACD or DVD A (anything with a .1 channel) = sub. Prior to getting a dedicated 2 channel pre, I was running the sub and getting less and less satisfied though the Ultra is very musical. Adding the pre and changing amps, put me over the top for going subless.

By who? Many of the best 2 channel rigs I've heard run subs (including ones with SDAs). Many of them will run stereo subs. It can be more difficult to get it set up properly, but it is by no means a concensus that 2 channel means no sub.

shack, I'm talking about large SVS subs paired with SDAs running large...so it's a concensus of a fairly small group ;). Wasn't making a blanket statement. Running stereo subs or utilizing a single in 2 channel can be an excellent solution.
