My wife blew my RTI 12s, some advice needed

Hiya all, I need a little help/advice for my RTI 12s(and also RTI 6s).

My system is as follows:-
Yamaha RXV2500 processor
Outlaw 7500 power amp
Denon DVD 3910
RTi 12s front
RTi 6s rear
CSi 5 center
Kimber 4tc for front speakers
cheapo cable for rears
various good quality interconnects

My system is in my basement which is about 35ft long by 12ft at one end(where my setup is) and expands to about 24ft at other end.

Last weekend we had a party and for ease i hooked up my I-pod to my yamaha. Due to the nature of I-pods, compression etc the volume isn't as loud as it is for cds, but try telling that to my wife!
As the night progressed the drunker we got my wife seemed to think there was unlimited volume from my stereo she just kept jacking it up and up and I kept turning it down. Eventually she jacked it up too much that the RTi 12s stopped working.
After some investigation the next day i discovered that the amps were ok but the speakers had blown, well I am still getting sound from the woofers but no mid range or tweeters. I'm not an expert but to me I think the crossovers have blown.
Can anybody offer me some advice/help on how to go about properly diagnosing the problem and the best way to fix them if it would be cost affective.

On a side note shortly after getting my Outlaw amp about 1 1/2 years ago I decided to try it out on my RTi 6s as main stereo, I cranked them up and they sounded pretty good for a while and then I blew one of the drivers. Can someone point me in the right direction to find a replacement, again I dont want to spend too much on a replacement for these as you can pick up a new pair fairly cheaply but at the same time I dont want to trash them.

Many Thanks for any advice/help....Art
PS I will consider divorce as an option hehe

Use a multimeter set to ohms and check the resistance across the + and - terminals on the suspected blown drivers.

arttymus, fwiw, Yes, you can get a pair of RTi12's @ amazon for $740/ pr. BUT, when you add in S/H and taxes, it'll probably run you around $900+/-, which I don't think a set of mid's will cost from Polk.
I'd follow Faces' advice and determine exactly what's wrong and work from there.
BTW, I'd make the Mrs. PAY for everything! And NOT from the 'Joint account' EITHER!!

I put a meter across the mid range drivers and tweeters, the lower mid range in both speakers seam to be ok, the upper drivers and tweeters are dead.
Why wouldn't I hear any sound from the one driver that seams fine?

Anyway looks like some replacement drivers and tweeters, what is the possibility of the crossovers being bad as well?

    Regards and Many Thanks...Art

Art, IME the crossovers should be fine. They just deliver the power. The resistive part [Tweeters and mids] are the ones to kick the bucket first.

Have you hooked up any of the drivers in question straight up to the amp AT LOW VOLUME to see if they do indeed work? If they do work, at that point I would suspect the x-over but I highly doubt that's the issue.

In the future, I would consider an attenuator for parties like that. That way she can crank it up all the way without harm to the rig. ;)

J and R computer and audio world in NYC has the 12's. My father works for ups (there is a ups discount) and I got them brand new shipped for 822. Thats the easiest way to fix it......and then you can find out what is wrong with the others in the mean time.

Exactly!...you now have leverage to get those SDA's or LSi's that you've had your eye on.;);)

And I believe I know the Eagles song you're talking about...can't recall the name offhand though.

    Thanks for all the help/advice..

I tested the mid range drivers in my RTi 12s, both the top drivers and tweeters in each speaker are bad.
Anyone know of a generic source of these?
Also are the drivers different for left or right speaker?

    Regards and Thanks...Art

Why a generic source? I would check with c/s first. Their pricing can be very reasonable in my experience, and at least you'd be sure they would sound right when you get the parts, not to mention the advice they could give in case of any difficulties installing things.

Trying generic alternatives might end up being money thrown away if it doesn't work out, unless you really know exactly what you are doing IMO.

Are you sure its the drivers and not something on the crossover board?
