Have any fans of masses (esp. Berlioz, Cherubini, Beethoven, Mendelsohn), motets/madrigals (esp. Tallis, Janequin, et al.), or string quartets (esp. Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn) ACTUALLY gone fully down the SACD road (speakers, SACD multi-channel CD/DVD player, and music SACD)?

Bonus points in credibility if you aren't now selling your hardware. ;)

I haven't been too overly impressed so far.
Altho the hybrid SACD's seem to sound much better that the standard on a regular player.

Sony makes them, I wonder if they equal their ES gear? :p

Not that particular model, but Sony did market a "ED" series of speakers that were designed for SACD. I remember them being offered at Circuit City. As you can tell from this professional review and a subsequent owner's review, these were winners. Unfortunately, speakers with Sony's name attached to them will always get ignored even before anyone has listened to them. Btw, Sony has always made audiophile-quality speakers....they just never get imported to the US.

I had a set of "ED" speakers (center and a pair of bookshelves) and they were way better than any other Sony speakers I have ever heard. They were impressive IMHO.

Well, I suppose you could argue in favor or using the same surrounds as main speakers, rather than "lesser" surrounds, which is frequently cited as the C.W. for H.T. (Didn't know about the Sony SACD speakers described above).

    The SS-K70ED is a three-way, with a 6.5-inch woofer, 10-inch carbon dome tweeter, and a B&W-esque 6.5-inch woven Kevlar midbass driver

    That's a damn big tweeter!

Got what I could afford and what got a halfway decent rating for the $$.
I was gonna get a Yamaha SACD player but it was about $500 and didn't get a very good rating.

If I hafta spend $1000 for a SACD then I'll toss in the towel cuz it's not gonna happen.

Since money is a concern, look for a used Denon 2900 @ $200.00 or a 3910 @ $350.00 or so. Both do a respectable job with SACD.

BTW, what is it that isn't impressing you?

You'll get there quicker with all that noise inducing stuff turned off, bypassed entirely if possible.

If you are using ANY DSP with your SACD recordings all you are doing is distorting the sound. Either listen in pure stereo or multichannel bypassing any type of processing. If you feel the need to use those "features" of your AVR, then you are right, SACD is probably not for you.

Nope my Yammy in Multi-Channel mode is direct you cannot change a thing.
I have it hooked direct Multi-Channel from the Sony to Multi-Channel on receiver....you hear it as it is on the SACD no adjustments possible.
Only way is with the SACD used as a Hybrid in the regular CD player.
Which I have mentioned sounds much richer and fuller than a standard copy this way.

Also, with a HDMI audio capable unit, you get access to the processing and bass management of the receiver or pre/pro, I think, rather than have to use the more limited functions of some players (including mine). I use 5.1 analog connections, so I wouldn't really know about this, but just adding to the discussion ...
