I'm sure those more edumacated in SACD will clarify, but SACD started as 2 channel only . Multichannel support started later. All SACD's will have the 2 Channel mix, but not all will have the surround mix.
I could be wrong here, but I don't think there is a .1 channel on SACD MC. Or at least not all of them have it.
Another note-not all SACD are hybrid, meaning they won't all contain both the SACD layers and the regular Redbook CD layers.
You have to look carefully at each SACD you want to buy. It might be available in both 2 ch and MC but there might be several releases out there.____________________

That's true. Even now, some of the top-of-the-line SACD players out there are 2 channel only. All SACD's will have the 2 Channel mix, but not all will have the surround mix.
Almost all SACD released has a dedicated 2 channel stereo or mono mix. I say almost because there are about 10 SACD titles out there, out of more than 5,600, that is multi-channel only.I could be wrong here, but I don't think there is a .1 channel on SACD MC. Or at least not all of them have it.
SACD is actually capable of full bandwidth 5.1 multi-channel surround sound. However, multi-channel surround sound can come in any combination up to 5.1 channels. It can be 4.0, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1, etc. You get the picture.Another note-not all SACD are hybrid, meaning they won't all contain both the SACD layers and the regular Redbook CD layers.
Almost all SACD releases within the last 3 years are hybrid SACD, although production for single-layer SACD is still possible. The CD layer of a hybrid SACD come in regular CD, HDCD, or Enhanced CD, which can feature video capability. Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company" SACD is one SACD that has videos of Ray Charles on its CD layer.
XRCD as the CD layer of hybrid SACD was proposed but ultimately rejected by XRCD's owner, JVC, which happened to be a supporter of SACD's rival, DVD-A.

I prefer 2 channel SACD on nearly all the recordings I have with the major exception being Pink Floyd DSOTM;)Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

You should listen to them as they were meant to be heard. Multi-Channel is a cacophony. There's nothing better than holographic imaging and a soundstage that surrounds you from just two speakers."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

The best multi-channel recordings are the ones specifically recorded that way (Dianna Krall; the Girl in the Other Room). "Temptation" in 5.1 from that recording is amazing. Also, the digitally recorded 1812 Overture in 5.1 is pretty astounding as well. That said, I agree with you on a lot of the crap m/c recordings.

cacophony?? holographic?? Face Man you have reached the four syllable Polk Post limit, however, to do so in three sentences is note worthy.

Even though there are some multi channel SACD's out there that sound very good in there 3-4-5 channel configurations I think music should be 2 channel only and movies should be done in multi channel. IMHO

sorry bud.. welcome to the unfriendly world of SACD. i don't get it either.. that's why i never got into SACD and instead went with DVD-Audio.. which of course didn't survive the wars. DVD-Audio always gave you 5.1 surround sound. none of this 2 ch ****.
for some reason, the better format alwyas loses out.:(PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I can't help it. I must.....chime.......in......trying........hard.......to........resist (Captain James T. Kirk voice). I love BOTH!!! Gasp....shudder....scream....I love my two channel only setup and love a great two channel holographic image especially with vinyl or a well recorded two channel cd or sacd. But I also love "real" multichannel. By real I mean not upconverted two channel but deliberatly engineered multichannel. I have an extensive collection of dts disks (400ish)sacd and dvd-audio multichannel music and love that as much and sometimes more than their two channel vinyl counterparts. Try Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here in multichannel and you may see what I mean. YES, they can coexist in the same household harmoniously. As for two channel sacd. Great stuff. Almost always sounds better than cd and usually as good or close to as good as vinyl. My two cents. I can already feel the heat.SDA-1C (full mods)

With SACD already proven.. then why do they release so much of it in only two channel? it's capable of 5.1. so why should i pay more for a SACD when all i'm getting is standard 2 ch stereo. albeit it's hi rez.. but it's still 2 ch stereo. and i want friggin 5.1 surround if that format is capable of it damnit.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Well I tried the mentioned CD in my standard player.....
The Hybrid [Remastered] part comes out.
Richer and more realistic than the standard copy I have IMHO.

?. Why not have 20.5? or 100.10
A. Because it would not be realistic. Most music is recorded in 2 channel stereo in my oppinion because the instruments and vocals are in front of you not to the sides or rear. Other than the audience screaming in a live performance there is little value in having more than 2 channels for most music.
Movies are great in 5.1 or 7.1 because there are so many things happening all around you and many special effects that would be impossible to replicate accurately in 2 channel.
