Which sub SVS vs Velodyne

Hello all! I've been a member for a while, but this is my first post. Anyone have any thoughts on the new SVS PB13 ultra vs the Velodyne Optimum 12. Both are about $1500. The SVS is a bigger enclosure. I listen to music only (no home theater).
Thanks,
Mike

We have an SVS PC-Ultra in our HT set-up,and a Velo SPL-1000R in our 2-channel rig.
For music,my vote goes to the Velo. -
i prefer the Velodyne subs over SVS. I never had good luck blending SVS for music. Theater they crack the walls. Velodyne is the best of both worlds.Dan

Have you personally listened to the SVS PB13? I wouldn't say its the most musical sub, but it would stomp the Velo for HT applications. I would agree the Velo is better suited for 2-channel, but to say the Velo is the "best of both worlds", I'd have to disagree. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
-
My Velo SPL-1200R replaced an SVS 25-31plus cylinder sub. As far as the SVS stomping the Velo for HT duties...that wasn't my finding. What I heard from the Velo was so damn impressive for both HT & 2 channel, that I just had to go & order another one. I ran other subs also, but none of them could compare to the Velo, especially for seemless integration for 2 channel listening.
Finding a sub that can go "boom-boom" for HT is an easy find. Getting that same sub to perform flawlessly for 2 channel...that's a different story. Get the Velo!!!"2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -
I'm talking about the SVS PB-13, not the 25-31. The comparison was the PB13 to the Velo, in a different league than the 25-31. I'm not talking about ALL of the SVS subs in general...
-
I've already purchased and received the SVS but, have not opened it. Polk club member Ben is upgrading my LSI 15's crossovers so my system is down until I receive the crossovers back. I have not heard it yet. I was running a Polk DSW600 which was kind of weak imho. I have 45 days to return the SVS, and now I'm having second thoughts. I appreciate the input. Confusion is setting in!!Polk LSI 15's

I agree, Mike. I'm not sure how many people have listened to the PB-13. I guess when I get the my system up and running I'll have a good listen. I just don't want to regret making the wrong decision.Polk LSI 15's

Like I said, finding a sub that can go "boom-boom" is easy. I was looking at the Velo in the lastest issue of Audio Advisor. It looks like they have a 30 day return policy. I may have to audition them both. My goal is definately to have the best musical sub, but I do want some slam! It just sucks to deal with returns and the shipping.Polk LSI 15's

The PC-Ultra will dwell with the best of them, the Ultra driver is impressive...you asked about a sub to be used strickly in a 2-channel set-up.
Maybe you'll like what you hear with the SVS. -

SVS does a hell of a lot more than go "boom boom", the hard part is finding a sub that can dig as deep as the SVS, something the Velo line has a hard time in doing compared to the SVS.
Just differing opinions, that's all... I wouldn't judge the whole SVS line by only owning the 25-31.
I'm not going to turn this thread into a brand debacle. -

I guess it's like anything with this hobby. I'm sure the SVS will blow away the Polk DSW600, but then, after awhile, will I wonder what if?? If it's not the sub it will be the amp or something else I want to change a few months down the road!Polk LSI 15's

Like I said, I wouldn't regret that purchase one bit! I can almost say I'd never even look back with that sub purchase. I can almost guarantee you once you hook that sub up, you'll be more than pleased. Congrats and enjoy... -

I know that returns are a PITA...but,that's really the only way to find out which Sub fits the bill in YOUR set-up.
The cost of return shipping is minor compared to the headaches of "What If" -
There's only one way to find out. Order them both for a shootout & keep the one you like. That should be a world of fun. It'll only cost you a few bucks for S&H. Yeah, man. Thank's. I think once I get my upgraded crossover's and the new sub hooked up I'll be stoked for awhile. I appreciate all the opinions though.

I hear ya!!! But in the back of your mind the sub fairy will also be there asking you the big what if...as in what if the Velo did a better job. But since you never gave it a listen, the question will always be looming in the back of your mind. Get them both in & have a shootout!!! If you ever have a chance to demo a JL Audio Fathom 110-113 sub I can almost guarantee you will return or sell whatever you have now. Both Velo and SVS are good for sure but the JL subs are just in another category all by themselves imo. For a few hundred bucks more you can get the F112 (cheaper than the PB13 Ultra) or F113 off of audiogon btw. Just my 2 cents.

I did not see one on Audiogon. It looks like the retail is around 3500. I did read some stellar reviews, but it looks to be out of the price range I'm willing to pay.Polk LSI 15's

When you go to www.audiogon.com do a search for "JL Audio" without the quotes.

Velodyne subs don't get stomped by anyone. Price class to price class I like the Velodyne. You can buy anything you like. If I was buying , a DD 12 would be my sub of choice . If you can swing it, the DD 15 is amazing. It's so big and powerful yet quick and fast. In and out it goes. Musical all day.
Some people love there SVS subs. It really depends on what you want it to do.

Heya Dan. Been comparing the Velo DD18 with the JL F113 for a few weeks over at a buddies house (not that I can afford them). I like the JL overallfor music and HT but the Velo is one hell of a sub. Have you ever heard any of the JL Audio subs? I'm curious cause I know this is your field of interest and work. Look forward to your thoughts.

I did see the DD 15 for 2315.00 @ Audiophile Liquidators. I'm not familiar with this company. I could see spending the extra 700. Anybody familiar with this online retailer? I don't think their factory authorized. (edit) looks like One Call has a B stock DD 15 for 1999.00 )not sure what B stock means)Polk LSI 15's

No! I think SVS will not blow away DSW600 (unless you prefer exaggeration). SVS PB13 Ultra has the clean and plenty of output under 20Hz but anything above it, it'll only be a tad more power than the DSW600 in the 20Hz-150Hz range. But the PB13 Ultra will sound cleaner in the 20-150Hz region also.
DSW600 is a good sub that costs about 1/2 to 1/3 less than PB13 Ultra so it's not a bad bargain sub.
If you want clean musical subs, I would look Ascend / Rythmik Direct Servo subs that seems to please many people with their purchase. The Direct Servo is a similar technology (but different approach) to the Velodyne but developed and patented by Rythmik owner.
If you also want more subs for the price of the Single PB13 Ultra or the Single Velo subs, take a look at the bargain price of the DSW1000 (also very musical to some people) from NewEgg. I think you can get 3 subs for the price of a single Velodyne or SVS PB13.

Well, I owned 2 x PB13 Ultra myself and I have no compliant about it at all. It sounds very good for music and excellent for HT. But for pure music, I use sealed subs.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -

Wow, I would think it would be quite an upgrade from the DSW600. I just sold my DSW for about half what I paid. I won't be happy if I'm not going to notice much. I know watts is not everything, but the SVS with 750 rms vs 250 rms with the DSW should be a noticable difference.Polk LSI 15's

I mean PSW1000 (not DSW1000) in the previous post.
Yes, it's an upgrade from DSW600 to PB13 Ultra for sure. It's a definite improvement for music but more so for the HT use. But you are saying you want a sub for 100% music and most people who bought PB13 Ultra for subs have at least more about HT use than music.
Watts are watts and the efficiency of the driver plays an important role of how much power it needs to achieve the desire Sound Pressure Level. From what I heard, polk said their DSW series has an improved and more efficient driver so the power requirement is not much?
Well, PB13 Ultra is a definite improvement so don't regret it. I think you said you've the sub already delivered to you so just enjoy it. I am sure you'll love yours.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:
