RT800i buzz

Purchased these some years back. After a power outage, right front speaker developed a buzz (even with a $200 power conditioner/protector on it) and I've not messed with it since.
FForward to today, in process of moving, decided I'd like to repair them rather than dump.
Have a few questions if thats okay.

#1 How to determine what is the culprit (the sub portion/the upper parts/etc)
#2 If it can be proven to be JUST the sub, can I "turn off" somehow the sub portions so I can use them but in a limited capacity over the holidays (having xmas company and my other stuff far <<<<< Polks.) I can use my Polk freestanding sub to make up a bit for the loss of the on board low end if suggested
#3 Any other thoughts/suggestions you can add would be most helpful.

The truth is I LOVED the speakers TO DEATH for the little time they were up and running. (maybe 6 months tops) When they went, I had very little $$$ for repair (and replacing other things that blew in my house) so they sat hidden in a corner so as not to depress me (being in plain sight) I dearly would love to get them back into service, even if not 100% of their old glory. Hopefully this is feasible because even with having aquired other things in the meantime, I'm not ready emotionally to let go. :o

P.s. Oh, about my usage. Always at low/moderate volume (I was so defensive about them I kept the amp in a locked cabinet only I had access to) A decent quality amp (Marantz SR19) and all sorts of power conditioners/protections. (thats why it hit so hard when they went down. I spent over $400 to protect my babies and it did ZERO it seems) :(

Thanks for any help. Sorry if I'm the new guy asking a bunch of annoying questions. Blocked "polk" from my memory until now but am determined to get back my Polk buddies. (had the whole series too, sub,500 rears, center.Still new in box. Made me ill. :( )

I guess I should add I feel the hum/buzz happens immediately upon power on (to the speaker)(even without the receiver on/hooked up) That's why I'm leaning more towards an amp issue than uppers issue.

Oh and I've seen suggestions to PM Ken for help. I would but I have less than 10 post (so no PMs) and I'm not going to firebomb the board for my own selfish purposes. If somebody would send him my way though Id be most thankful. :-)

Welcome to Club Polk! There is no reason I can think of why you could not get these back in working order ... pretty much like new, actually. The best place to start is probably Customer Service (Ken & Co.) via the chat tool, when available (I've never figured out when that is), or by the usual methods:

    polkcs@polkaudio.com
    1-800-377-POLK (7655) 9AM-5:30PM EST Mon-Fri

You can also just use the "contact us" link on the bottom of the page:

    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/sendmessage.php

They should be able to tell you how to get the parts you need and what is the most likely cause of the buzz. Pricing is very reasonable. The only snag you might hit is if the part(s) is (are) no longer in stock, in which case you'll have to search eBay, craigslist and the Flea Market right here on Club Polk.
    Alea jacta est!

I had a tweeter go fuzzy on one of my RT7s. Polk wouldn't give me the specs for the tweeter so I pulled it to do dyagnostics on it at work. It was a 6 ohm driver. I bought 2 Vifa tweeters that best matched the characteristics of the Polks. 6 ohm, 89db spl, 100w rating. While I waited for them to arrive I pulled some loose decals off the tweeter I pulled then re-installed it. Its been playing just fine every since.
If you want an easy test to see if it is the speaker or the amp, just switch the speaker leads; left channel over to right and right to left. If its the amp (and I doubt it) then the buzz will switch from the one speaker over to the next. If its the speaker, the buzz will remain. If it is the speaker, it's probably the tweeter.
