...did you ever see the Meadowlark Kestrel design? The grille consist of just grille clothe that stretches over drivers and slips into a channel on the sides of the drivers mounting board....Wonder why more speakers aren't designed this way? No hard surfaces extending in front of drivers.

Thiel uses a similar approach; cloth does have a frame, but when placed on the speaker it stretches over the baffle; they recommend to keep them on.

Since this has been brought up in a different thread http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77978: I'm a "go nekkid" kinda guy (not me , the speakers).

If the speakers look good covers off, then off they come. My current Polk RT speakers don't really look good enough IMO to go nekkid though. Too much boring old plastic IMO. Perhaps I would like something like the LSi9 covers off.

Otherwise, kids present do factor in the equation: I'd rather have damaged grilles than pushed in domes on my drivers, or worse: damaged tweeters.

Finally, some speakers may look just as good fully dressed (to my taste) if they have something less than a plain old boring grille. The Focal Chorus 700V and 800V lines come to mind. I'm sure there are others that are equally interesting to look at. The best of both worlds, I suppose.

i had that going on for years. Now my grills come off when I want to sit and listen AND be all into my speakers. I enjoy looking at them. They really don't sound any different on or off. Maybe a little but not enough to get up if I'm already down.

Oh ... I don't know that I would find anything wrong with that. I just have to figure out what she meant by it! Does it means tweeters nekkid, drivers clothed, or what ... ?

Very funny. So, if you're already up, you get 'em off before you get down; but if you're already down, then there's no need to get up to get 'em off before you get down ... You must be very fit with all that upping and downing goin' on.

    My grills stay on.

The last time they were off, my boys used one of them as a ramp to climb onto the couch.

They wouldn't touch the drivers either way. Apparently I needed to tell them to also not touch the grills.

My heart stopped when my cat was using my speaker cone as scratching post, I then put on my little speaker covers and he still trying to use it as a scratching post. I of course direct him towards the real scratching post I got him but YA I have to buy a new speaker! WITH TOUGH metal GRILLS!!! yaaa! My little cat love the soft rubber around the side of the speaker. I have sense taken the speaker out and he lays in it and uses it all the time at a cat bed. I have replaced it with some tower speakers that he cant reach the grill on it. So LOL

I have cats. They are not permitted in my music room. There is way too much money in my speakers and my gear. You could always declaw the cat. I know some people are against it but it depends on how you look at it. It is a trade off for a good life in a loving home. Other people will say it is cruel. I have had both kind of cats. The declawed cats had the run of the house, my cats at this point with claws are confind to a couple of rooms. I would be ripping if my cat messed up my SDA SRS 2's or any speaker of mine. Just my opinion.
