I think I can unerstand the 3% charge==I may be off base but if I understand this correctkly , if you have the ability to take Credit Card paments directly from somebody's CC, you have to pay for that service to Mastercard, Visa , etc. And you have to pay for each CC type with separate accounts if you want to be able to accept multiple kinds. And you get charged a % for each sale. So having an upcharge based on payment type is not new. It's why a lot of pizza shops and the like still don't take credit cards.

PayPal allows you to use your CC to pay for paypal--they have to bear the upcharge to the Credit Card bank as a middle man. Somebody has to pay for thet Credit Card charge.

For Paypal to sit in the middle to allow you to do that and save you the monthly costs associated with being able to accept CC and avoid handling people's CC #s and the assiated costs with protecting that information, not to mention the fallout for a spillage-I think 2.9% is not a bad deal.

What I don't agree with is how PP continues to charge the same amount whether as a buyer you use Direct Debit, or use a PP balance. I think they should be a lower %, and it shouldn't matter whether the seller has an upgraded PP account or not. In some cases the PP charge might be 0% depending on the circumstance, but some sellers will still tack on an upcharge anyway.

While I am not an eBay seller and am not completely familiar with the pricing tiers, I would hope that eBay offers discounted listing pricing, etc, when forced or even electively choosing to use PP only as the payment options. But I doubt that would happen.

That just it if you sell anything today someone will pay a fee to the CC terminal point, whether it's PP or a POS terminal. To tell you the truth PP is cheaper, then a POS terminal so I don't have an issue with them at all.

Ebay has gone downhill. Since they changed their feedback rules I have been plagued with non-paying bidders. I really don't like it anymore.

Yes, but you are a hopeless GEEK and reformed snitch. So if it costs me nothing to use a CC but an extra 3% to use the one whose name shall not be spoken then the unclean one is cheaper???

That kind of creative accounting has landed a few fellows in the big house, although since your cute if that happens I will send you some mags and a box of chocalates.

PP HQ has a sign in front of it
    The sign says

The wind blows for free and so do we.

    So lets see

E-bay lets any old scammer join and place ads for a fee.
E-bay which owns Paypal then has Paypal collect a fee to save you from the scammers they let join.

OK. So the sign is not correct, PP actually blows for a fee.

frankly, i'm surprised it took this long.. EBay has owned Paypal for years now... why they waited this long is interesting.

They just keep digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole. Hey Ebay... people don't like you anymore. get a clue, you're driving people away. The revamped fee structure is a mess.. now this. What next, start your own shipping company?????

same here.. i've been instead selling to local audio people on other forums and here. This is the first year (2008) that my Ebay buying and selling is about half of what it has been since 1999.

My stuff for sale may not move out the door as fast.. but I also am not subjected to Ebay's fees. :D:D:D

PayPal isn't just for ebay, many small companies are using a PayPal payment gateway. I use one myself, Ben Cables here is using one, even larger companies like BlueJean Cables, SignalCable are using it.

Many new e-payment systems already on the market, or being planned. You'll see some major financial players (well, if they can survive that is ) enter the market. Pretty bold move by eBay/PP to lock them out of one of the major online markets, it will be interesting to see how it works.

Get ready for more of these moves, as eBay's model is having challenges, and they are looking to become more of a closed marketplace rather than the "community" approach. Think of the new model as the "gated community".

Sad but very true Doug, the battle for fees to handle financial transactions is just heating up, watch out for Chase or maybe a Cell Phone company or a partnership. I will be the guy slowing the line down digging his wallet out to get some green paper with pictures on it. Although I fully expect to see a surcharge at stores if you use a cashier rather than self checkout.

I am still for getting paid in life minutes, go broke and your out of here.

I'm a fan of PP, as I have been taken care of when things have gone south. But, to deny other forms of payment is just another stupid move by the new leadership. Time for Meg Whittman to grab back the reigns. The current bozo has really taken away the enthusiasm people had towards eBay. In a faltering economy, eBay should be in a growth situation.

I think its just as well. Fast, easy and convienient. I'm sure the time constraints of waiting for other forms of payment cause a lot of problems with feedback, refunds etc. (because they have to deal with complaints).

C'mon, fellas. You guys are being too hard on ebay. I'm surprised they haven't done this earlier. This allows them to exert more control of protecting your sales transactions.

Here's another way to look at it --
When you buy a product on-line, how do you typcially pay for it? By credit or debit card, right? Likewise, as a seller you want your money before you ship merchandise to the buyer because "time is money." Personal checks and money orders are a big pain in the neck, both for buyer and seller, and take too much time. As a seller, I'm willing to pay 2.9% so I can get my money immediately. And with PayPal, I can spend it as soon as I get it. No waiting. I can't do that with a personal (usually out of state) check or money order. I gotta get off my fat **** and deposit it, then wait for it to clear. That's a hassle.

I'd be fine if e-bay wasn't double dipping. As it stands, you pay a listing fee and sometimes a percentage of the sale. Now, on top of that we are getting Paypal fees applied as well. That could amount to a sizable chunk of money for a lot of sales.

True, but what's a better alternative? You can try to sell on craigslist (yuck!), place an ad in the local paper, go with audiogon, set up at a swap meet, etc. Either way, you're gonna pay -- with time, money, or both. Craigslist may be free, but prepare to be bombarded with scam mail and crazy potential buyers, half of whom pull out on the sale.
