Dude, none of those cars are Swiss.

BMW, Mercedes Benz and VW are German and Saab and Volvo are Swedish.

I really don't think there is anything automotive made in Switzerland that is sold here in the U.S.

Damn I ment to write Swed, sorry, I'm usually not up this late. I was gettin alittle annoyed at someone calling another member Un-american and other bashings because of his choice of cars. Total unwarrented crap that didn't need to be written.

The salaries of the CEOs is not even a drop in the bucket for a company the size of GM or Ford. You could take their compensation down to $1 and it would have NO IMPACT upon the viability of the companies. GM burns through more cash in a few hours than it pays it's CEO for a year. It may make you feel good to blame them for the problems, but the problem is multifaceted and NO ONE ISSUE is the cause or the solution.

That's true. I think a huge part of the problem also is the U.S. corporate heads feel obligated to turn out the highest annual stock dividend payouts, instead of having the long-term approach.
Those expensive, high-profit SUV's have come about to bite them severely in the ****.

The U.S. truck superiority just goes to show they could do the same with cars if they wanted to. It's a business decision (profit)
If they opened up all their closed-door decision-making meetings on why they decided specifically to not have stricter quality-control in one line as another, it would shed alot of light.

Seems we have had this big 3 discussion more than once.Union contracts, poor management, government, all play a role in their down fall.I say they have to go bankrupt to get rid of the bogus union contracts, and start from scratch.Too bad we won't see it happen with all the coin they threw at politicians. In the end,our tax money will bail them out for 5 or so years then they will be back with their hands out for more.Sound good to you?? Not me....but this is the reality of what is in washington. Not trying to turn this political but it makes it hard when you want politicians to bail you out with our money. Some who have contributed to the problem are now asked to help solve it,same as the houseing problem. In the private sector, this would not, could not, happen as you would be fired faster than a speeding bullet.

That's the "burden rate". Add up all costs for an employee.

Yep. And it's amazingly complex, taking into account the minutia.

How much extra does it cost in A/C due to heat one bodys heat generation. How much does that one extra parking space (maintenance, repaving lot, painting lines) cost.

It's insanely detailed - but that's how you run a business and get an accurate picture of what your costs are.

Most people here would be shocked to see what their *actual* hourly cost is to the company they work for.

I doubt this will go well, but let me ask a hypothetical here.

Let's just assume htat some of you are right, and that the big 3 make a product that is at least on par with the imports, or even better. Quality for the most part is subjective, so pretend you guys are right. Maybe you are, who knows, the numbers are all close.

Now, pretend quality of the Big 3 ACTUALLY starts to decline. There's some objective way to measure quality, and the Americans start to slip. Far. Would you guys EVER consider not buying American? In this hypothetical, if you're paying the same amount of money for a product that is significantly and measurably inferior, would you consider buying an import?

I know it's kind of a straw man argument, but I"m legitimately curious. Cuz if the answer is no, can your opinion of the quality of American vehicles even be trusted?

I also find it funny that the same few people that are so pro-America and pro-Capitalism are the same ones hoping the government steps in and imposes giant tarriffs and other incentives to buy American, which is a pretty non-free market idea, no?

I'm pro-American, so I hope the Big 3 get their heads out of their asses and make a GREAT product, on their own, so I can buy one and be proud of it, rather than settling for something that I find wanting just so I can say I bought American.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Well, GM announced they were getting rid of 3 of 8 corp. jets, so THAT'LL help!
I say, let them file Chapter 11, and get their **** together. And if the union doesn't like it, they can go find REAL jobs!
If the big 3 want to stick around, they should move SOUTH!!! Especially, since S.C. announced an 8+% unemployment.
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

    A Toyotal Solara weighs 3200lbs.

    A Chrysler 300 with a 6cyl weight 3700lbs.

If you didn't have the weight of the engine, a C 300 with a 4cyl could weigh 3500lbs

    If my Solara works just fine with a 4cyl at 3200lbs, why wouldn't a 300 weighing 3500 ??

But that's the US automakers view. 0-60 is all important, screw gas costs and importing oil.

I prefer not sending my money off to support terrorists in the middle east waiting to attack the USA

It seems many basic concepts of physics escape him. The simplest of which being power-to-weight ratios. There are plenty more which he is neglecting but hey, he's from The Internet so that makes him an expert on EVERYTHING. Don't use science and facts to muddy things up on him 'cause he'll just tell you that you are a big poopyhead and that's that! I mean, gosh, what the hell is wrong with you and your logical arguments? We don't tolerate that kind of crap here! It's sensationalism, knee-jerk reactions and half-assed opinions supported by flimsy coincidences! Get with the program already!

That is why I posed my response as a question - "If my Solara works just fine with a 4cyl at 3200lbs, why wouldn't a 300 weighing 3500 ??"

Rather than make a statement, the statement was posed as a question to acknowledge that perhaps there is an answer which I do not see.

If you were a little sharper you would have understood that by asking a question instead of stating my opinion as a fact, I was, indeed, simultaneously making a statement that I very well might not understand all the variables.
