Laid off....

Laid off.....that is me...as of 2 weeks ago. Been on the job hunt for about 2 months now knowing this was coming. Can't seem to find something acceptable at the moment. Thankfully unemployment is good for 39 weeks now, but it just barely covers my college loans each month.

On a side note, I have 2 interviews set up for tomorrow and just received a phone call for my number 1 choice from when I first started looking 2 months ago. I have an interview with them on Wednesday from 10-3. To get hired there is a LONG process however, with the earliest start date being December 1st the lady said if everything goes as planned but to expect to start the first of the year if I make it through the process.

Not exciting times.....to say the least. Anyone else in the same boat? :(

I'm not, but I feel for you. 32,000 folks just filed for unemployment within the past month according to a report I just saw on CNN.

All I have to say is "Good luck, my friend".

Did your job close down or cut back on the number of workers? I hear more and more stories these days about people loosing their jobs and homes. I hope a change comes very soon. Crime is going up while the number of jobs steadily decreases.

My fathers job TOWER AUTOMOTIVE closed down and moved to Mexico he needed 30 years to be able to retire. He fell short by 7 months.

I hope everything works out. Good luck.

Cut backs, I was working under a contract with the plan(from what they told me) to have a full time offer on the table as of July, instead in July they told me I'd be let go in September since they are on a hiring freeze due to the economy.

You know you can defer your loan payments in the case of unemployment or hardship. The interest accrues but it could give you some relief if you are strapped.

    YMMV

I REALLY know how you feel, bro. I worked trade union, and it was part of the package. The first day I stepped foot on the job i started working myself out of a job. I NEVER got used to it. The saving grace was I made great money when I worked, but I couldn't make any long range plans 'cause I had to live on the savings in the lean times. and I mean lean.

The economy is in a shambles, but it will come around. You'll do OK. What is your chosen vocation? Are you willing to relocate?

I know, but that just makes it that much more painful in the end adding those extra months. I've got enough in my account that I was trying to use to save up for a place to live + unemployment to hold me over for a bit.

Like I said earlier too, the job I really want, my number 1 choice called me today finally. It's a huge interview process, but the rewards in the end are incredible. I'm hoping for the best.

Sorry to hear about that, man. Here's hoping this incredibly long interview process turns out to be more than worth it!!

This one takes 4. She said there isn't even a remote chance of less than 3.5 months. Oh well.

The company is idiotic if it takes 3.5 months to hire an employee. I would still go to the interview, make your best impression, and when they call you two months from now, politely tell them that you've accepted another opportunity and next time, they should reduce the amount of time it takes to hire employees.

Maybe. But it seems to me that the company misses out on a large number of potential employees by taking 3.5 months to complete the hiring process. I've had a lot of jobs doing IT consulting and I've never seen a company take over a month to hire a full time employee. Did you get a reason for the length of time?

Yes, I know the reason, and I knew before I even applied it would take that long since the HR person informed me ahead of time. The job is that worth it.

I hear the water from your town shows up as mescalin on the tox screen. Good luck:D

Do some small stuff. I'll be needing some stuff for my office in Nov/Dec for a day or two maybe, NAS or RAID stuff on the server, couple of upgrades.

Few extra surprises in the water never hurt anyone.....

I don't drink the tap water here. I do my part to stay green and drink bottled water in the smallest containers I can find at the store to create more refuse.

    (I'm kidding, obviously)

I'm lucky and in the medical field. The only time my work calls me is to see if I can work more overtime. Been that way through all of the tough times. It sucks to see people getting laid off, and I am fortunate to have a job that will forever be there even in the roughest of times.

One of the driving factors behind my decision to be a PA, pharmacist, or MD, and hence why I'm currently Pre-Med. If you don't mind me asking, what's your role in the medical field?

Same here...finishing up my last year as a pre-med. There will certainly always be sick people, though they might not always be able to pay me.

Is it getting rough for you IT guys with jobs being shipped overseas and stuff like that? Or is that not really happening?

I'm a respiratory therapist, and my wife is a nurse.

I was in pre-med at one time but family came first. I am not always happy with what I do but I get payed fairly good so it really stops me from doing anything else. When I do the math of going back to school, and how long it will take to recoup my current losses, plus paying off the school loans, it just does not make any sense to me to continue my education.

I also have a side business of selling lead aprons to Radiology and Cath-Lab departments. I do see a lot of fluctuations in that. Some months are really good and other months are quiet. A lot of department heads have stated over the last few months that their hospitals are pulling in the reins, so I could see medical sales having a big drop. I am not sure how close that is related to what we are seeing on Wall Street, but it is correlating, so I take it for what it is.

Many many many junior and entry level jobs are being shipped overseas unfortunately. Since this is really the start of my career and I'm looking for something junior level it's becoming harder to find. There are an incredible amount of jobs out there in the IT looking for 8-10 years experience, etc. I can tell you didn't start working IT when I was 13. ;)
