Ah it's a a little late in the year, and I have some food in the fridge. I have been leaving the squirrels and varmints alone. Well unless they are messing with my chickens;) This possum was pissed at me when I was getting him. Glad the rotten **** didn't get me:eek:

I have seen my buddy go up to one playing possum and kick it. It didn't do nothing. This one wasn't playing possum, and wasn't shy.

Nah. Swamp Yankee from in the woods of NE Ct. I've shot a lot of fish with that spear. It holds them pretty good. This possum wasn't too big. I would have left it alone if I didn't have chickens.

Good thing it didn't. Their bites are nasty, and they are as nasty as they look. Big, nasty rats. I wanna see a picture of the chucker-gun you use for the spear.
I used to bow fish a few times, but that thing's cool.

Well I hear the chickens squawking away out there so I get up and head out. Damn possum is messing with my chickens. The best weapon quick to grab was my fishing spear. The spear is 5 feet long with a rubber band to propel it. Well I got the SOB first shot. You can see the tips sticking out the side. I had to whack him with a hammer a couple times. The spear doesn't kill them, but it does a fine job of keeping him under control till I could whack him;)

In Jan of 1972,my friend and I were out ( 2-3am) and our lights blinded an opossum for a minute,,quickly Bob popped outside my VW Bus and threw a blanket over the critter, back in the bus he comes with a very pissed off amimal,,it got loose and was tear-assing inside the bus. Heck,, we got home and got our butts outta it pretty quick. These things have teeth and claws that will put an **** whipping on you in a New York second. Well, we left all of the doors open, but we could not entice it out of the bus,,just hissed at us,and **** all inside the bus,,finally in the morning,it had left, and now I/we were faced with the task of cleaning up all of the crap.Thats about all I have to say about that . Don't eff with these things,, they are not friendly.;)

Well that one has earned the right to live in my back yard. I am ready to start eating. They will feed me one way or another. 6 chickens is too many for the area they are running in. The vegetation can't keep up:(

Well I now have 3 eggs, and I think they are from the same chicken??? I tagged that bird to keep an eye on her. Would a chicken lay three eggs her first time?

Chickens tend to lay 1 a day.

Curious... did you get a rooster? Most chickens won't lay well unless they have a rooster present at least for the first few layings.
    Ludicrous gibs!

I just discovered this thread!!!!!! I'm Home!!!!!! While I haven't raised chickens in years (zoning where I live doesn't allow it), I just love raising chickens!!!!!

Ben, that egg is really nicely formed for a pullet starting to lay! I've seen all kind of elongated shaped eggs layed within the first week or ten days. Sometimes the eggs don't even yokes. It's like their body chemistry needs too fine tune the process. Other times, I've seen eggs with blood spots on their surface (tough lay that stretched things out a bit too far, I guess).

I disagree with Nadams about the need to have a rooster to keep egg laying constant. Pullets will lay about an egg a day. As they really get into their prime, sometimes one will kick out two eggs a day. Once in a long while, a double yoked egg will be produced. They have a distinct look without having to crack the egg to find the double yoke. Egg laying breeds, like white leghorns, lay quite well. Dual purpose (egg and meat) breeds aren't as quite as reliable layers. Most store bought eggs come from white leghorns.

What breed do you have? What are you feeding them? You say that they are eating up all of the greenery. That is to be expected. Chickens graze quite a bit and are, to many, surprisingly non-selective eaters. They will capture & eat field mice or small snakes in a second.

If you have a rooster in the mix, he will make it a point to embarass you by scewing one of the hens at your feet when your priest or your prudish relative is visting and the two of you are admiring the chickens!

    PM me.

I fully expect them to get a couple, but I have made up a few alarms to thwart their efforts before. We had an excess of coons out at his pond for a couple years (mild winters). I took an onion bag with some punkinseeds I caught, and tied it to a limb. I then tied a fishing line to it then ran it into the house through an eye screw, and down to a beer can. Then I took a short piece of line, and tied it to the eye screw, and to another beer can. When the coons would come they wood grab the bag of fish which would make the beer cans clang together. I cracked the door, and popped them. Well my neighbor, and I were talking trash saying who would get more coons so it was on! He had a have-a-heart trap that he baited. Well on night I popped two. My buddy and I brought the dead coons down to his place and laid them on their backs. The male died at full attention so we put a condom on his... The female was laid next to him with a cig in her mouth. We tossed a couple beer cans around the seen for aesthetics. Well the guys name was Pat. He stuttered. We went down to his place in the morning, and knocked on his door. He opened the door, and stuttered away "y y y y ou ggg gg uys are sick", and slammed the door! Well back to the varmint alert system. I think I can rig something a little better than two beer cans, and some fishing line to alert me if there is a predator;)

    BTW I don't sleep much;)

    thats hilarious

I went on VaCa recently so I just picked up 50# of hard feed(not the laying mix), but I have been substituting some ground up egg shells for the calcium. All 3 eggs were very nice, and tasted great. At first I was kinda thrown off by the dark rich color of the yolks, but after the second bite fears were relieved. I chose Barred Rocks for the bread. They are less aggressive than my second choice of RI Reds with kids, and my girls are 3 and 5. HB you can possible catch the Polk train down on the weekend of the 8th for another get together we are having. Meeting new Polkies is a great thing:)
    Take care.
