Leaving my job...maybe

Well they announced about a $500 million dollar restructuring plan at work last week. With phase 2 being voluntary layoffs. Well we are in phase 2 and I volunteered. I find out no later than sept 24th if they will even accept my offer to leave. Well I'm hoping they will let me leave as I am looking to move from West Michigan to Chicago so for me this would just be a big bonus to move on with my career. I have been with my company for 8 years now and I have had a good run, but just feel it is my time to move on. Plus I have no house so for me to leave is a lot less painfull for most and it would be nice to think I could save at least one person from losing there job in phase 3, the involuntary layoffs...

So wish me luck and more importantly, anyone know of good companies in Chicago for embedded software engineers?

Howie

    Seriously,
DICE is your friend. Don't be afraid to try the independent route. If you're willing to go corp-to-corp, BIZFilings and an accountant will be your friends.

    Good luck!

Maybe good for you but my job did "we will just lay people off and reduce some of the peoples pay who remain" without anyones choice. I'm not cool with that but my job was uneffected. it's a shame this has to happen, not to mention some good people are out of a job or are making less money when everything keeps getting more expensive.

I'm very salty about this kind of topic. I hope this is a good thing for you.

    Howie,

best of luck.. often times change is good. Why not leave on your terms instead of being forced out down the road? I think it's a good move.. you've got bigger cajones than I ever would have.. but then my situation is different.

I may face something similar in the next couple of years.. I'm a long time employee, making at least twice what a new employee would make if they replaced me right now. it ain't that much, trust me. ;)

the hot button for the 21st century is downsizing. Every company is doing it. :(

downsizing is always happening in waves. when the econmy rips, you need people to handle the work. when you have a slow down....then "restructuring" is suddenly needed. it sucks

Well I was offically turned down yesterday. So when I leave, it will be with nothing from my current company. Major oppertunity taken away. Well they never ment to give it to me in the first place, just some layer nonsense that they "had" to offer it to everyone yet they reserved the right to deny it.

They'll just do what they do best. Double your workload and hope you quit.
That seems to be the going thing right now.
