I know this was coming, but from watching the 5-minute trailer below, it looks even better than I'd hoped for!

Better yet, they used 14 High-Def cameras in filming it, so it's also being released on Blu-Ray!

Forget Nightwish. Forget Evenescence. There is only one.

    I hope that they record it well.

    I'm a longtime fan. Have all their discs, singles, DVDs, and a few live bootlegs. Prior to last year none of their releases were available in this country. They're slowly making inroads in the U.S.

    They originally started as a gothic metal band with both Sharon's vocals and Robert (lead guitarist) doing death metal vocals... kind of a "Beauty and the Beast" motif.

    Sharon and Robert are married and have a daughter born last year.

    I always find it funny when I hear mallrats claim that Within Temptation is ripiing off Evanescence... when WT predates Evenescence... they just haven't been big here in the U.S.

    Great stuff... SQ on their CDs and their last live DVD was excellent, so I have no doubt it will be excellent on this as well... I never judge sound quality from YouTube previews.

    It is a refreshing change to most of the heavy metal type stuff I've seen/heard. My only concern was what their message might be. Doesn't really matter so long as they aren't all out devil worshipers or into any number of other sick messages. I couldn't really tell from the few videos I watched.

    No, they are not black metal. Lyrically, it's somewhat spiritual but fairly innocuous. Certainly nothing I've ever thought could be construed as offensive.

    Unless these boys have some outstanding warrants over their heads, they ought to tour the US, even on a limited basis.

    Looking at their tour dates, looks like they'll be in the Netherlands (duh !), Belgium, Sweden, Ukraine, Hungary, France, and ..... Israel ?

    ...pretty much all places I won't have the opportunity to visit soon.

    Depends where your preferences lie. The early material is heavier, and the more recent the material the more lush the production and the orchestration.

    You won't be able to view any of their DVD releases unless you have a player capable of playing PAL discs.

    Chronological discography of studio discs, with my ranking behind (1 = best):

    Enter, 1997 (4)
    The Dance, 1998 (5)
    Mother Earth, 2001 (2)
    The Silent Force, 2005 (1)
    The Heart of Everything, 2007 (3)

    There are a zillion versions of Mother Earth, The Silent Force, and The Heart of Everything, released in different countries with different bonus tracks, extra discs, DVDs, etc.

    Other amazing metal bands with chicks up front are: Nightwish, Epica, After Forever, Aesma Daeva, and Lacuna Coil. Youtube them and I'm sure you'll enjoy them if you like Within Temptation.

    I think you just missed them. If I remember correctly, they toured North America not too long ago. I remember seeing their concert date somewhere. You wouldn't believe how popular these metal bands in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Hungary, etc.

    The Europeans produce superior metal.

    The first single from their most recent CD is a duet with Keith Caputo (Life of Agony). The song is entitled "What Have You Done".

    Here is an mp3 of that track.

    If you're referring to the death vocal counterpoint, here is an mp3 of the title track from their 1997 CD, Enter.

    These are 320kbps mp3s, so the file sizes are LARGE.

    I thought all of the DVD's they have released so far were PAL disks and would not play on standard US players. Is that not true?

    Well I'm gonna have to buy that on blu ray. But imo, still not as good as Nightwish.

    Yes, that is true. To my knowledge, none have been released in NTSC format.

    Then again, if you have an OPPO or other DVD player that does PAL-to-NTSC conversion, you're good.

    Received my Blu-Ray of Black Symphony in the mail yesterday and watched it last night. I've had the U.S. release 1CD + 1DVD (NTSC) for a few weeks, but deliberately did NOT watch the DVD, because I wanted to experience the concert in HD glory the first time.

    OMFG!

    Talk about sensory overload! The bitstream 5.1 sounds incredible! I'm not too enamored with some of the artistic editing of the video and some of the effects used through out (very jerky in places, I'm assuming intentionally so) but the whole thing is a huge spectacle. I cannot imagine what it would have been like to be at this show!

    The pullback shots of the stage and crowd give you an idea of the incredible scale of this performance. The HD color palette alone, though, is worth having, for the rich blues and reds.

    The orchestral arrangements and the choir add depth and impact, while retaining the familliarity of the songs (WT songs are fairly lushly orchestrated to begin with).

    The video quality is solid, but not reference quality. There is some artifacting on occasion and some of the shots are soft (even a few out of focus). I expect some of that in a live concert performance though, with all the different cameras being used.

    From a performance perspective, Sharon and the gang never sounded (or looked) better! The orchestra, band, and choir were seamless, dead on. I can't imagine the amount of rehearsal that went into this concert!

    Definitely a must-have... oh, and after viewing this, I don't even want to see the DVD.

    The music's ok but their in that same hard rock chick camp, not much that stands out from those other bands, at least from the several vids I watched on YouTube anyway.
    If...
    Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
    Ron loves a film = don't even rent.
