Metallica is Moscow. That was some crazy crazy energy. As a kid watching that, I didn't know if I was going to see a concert or war manuevers.

It's ok, better than the crap they released in the last 10 years."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

After listening to it some more, I'm not sure he's holding out on much.
There are a couple of good tracks, otherwise I'd say it wouldn't see much rotation here at all."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
Okay I'll eat my Crow. I actually like it. I still hate The day that never comes, but all of the other songs are pretty good. Way better than St Anger.
But why oh why The Unforgiven III. God let the song die please.
My favorite is All Nightmare Long. -

XM is currently running a Metallica channel (XM51) and I heard "the day that never comes", which isn't bad. Really haven't had much time to listen otherwise
I just listened to other the songs above. Based on these songs, I have to say DeathM is much, much better than that previous POS album StLamer. I remember my disgust when I first played StLamer. Couldn't get that cd out of my player fast enough.
However, DeathM is pretty damn good considering what Metallica has been putting out. Nice sound, bouble bass, guitar solos.
From what I heard, DeathM sounds closer to Metallica, than anything else released since Justice.
I will definitely buy the album on the 12th.Receiver: harmankardon AVR235

Dude they were just there for Ozzfest last month! I'm sure they will add more dates and cities to this tour though so cross your fingers they're coming back. I make take the train down to Portland to see them in November. Down is opening up for them on that show. Wish Down was part of the Seattle set.My Home Theater (WIP):

No doubt. The drums actually kick **** on Judas Kiss.
I have XM and have been listening to the Metallica channel. They throw in "Death Magnetic" songs once in awhile. However, I don't know the titles of the new songs, so I have to figure out if the song I'm listening to is new or from an older album. I have most of their albums, so I can usually tell if its new or old, but I dont have every song, so...
But I remember hearing that "Judas" song and wondering if it was new because it sounded really good..almost old-school.Pioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -
The whole album is out there now to stream. Holy crap it's really, really good. I didn't see Ozz fest because I went to Disturbed and Motley Crue the weekend before. Those fests are just too damn big. I'm most definitely crossing fingers. Maybe we can get some area polkies out to the show if they add one.

Pretty much sums up what I have been saying about this band and this album.Metallica: Death Magnetic
[Warner; 2008]
Metallica became the world's biggest metal band by doing everything right. Then they went and did everything wrong. Their first four records were classic permutations of 1980s thrash: The ferociously raw Kill 'Em All, the increasingly epic Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, and the toweringly technical ...And Justice for All. Until the latter, Metallica refused to make an MTV video. Self-dubbed "Alcoholica", the band cultivated a blue-collar image. However, on 1991's eponymous album (aka "The Black Album"), they went mainstream with radio-friendly ballads, losing old fans but gaining millions of new ones.
Since then, Metallica have been a comedy of errors. Load and ReLoad wallowed in hard rock dreck. The front of Garage Inc., a covers collection, found Metallica awkwardly costumed as auto mechanics to appear as the everymen they once were. S&M was an overwrought collaboration with a symphony. The band sued Napster, earning the scorn of fans. 2003's St. Anger was laughably bad. The documentary film Some Kind of Monster luridly aired the band's dirty laundry. Singer/guitarist James Hetfield and bassist Robert Trujillo were recently photographed shopping at Armani. Such antics have kept Metallica in the headlines, and not necessarily to their benefit. The anticipation for Death Magnetic has split along two lines: hope for a return to form, and schadenfreude.
The album fulfills neither expectation. It tries mightily to recapture Metallica's former glory, but only does so partially. Producer Rick Rubin told the band to write the unwritten half of Master of Puppets, a ludicrous proposition. But his intent was well-meaning: get rich, fortysomething rockers to recall themselves as hungry, twentysomething metallers. In the real world, this is called a midlife crisis. One can emulate one's younger self, but one can't unlearn one's years.
So it is with Death Magnetic. Self-plagiarization abounds. "That Was Just Your Life" and "Cyanide" harken back to "Blackened" from ...And Justice for All. "The Day That Never Comes" has the clean tones of "Fade to Black" and the machine gun riff from "One". In the 1980s, Metallica wrote hundreds of riffs without repeating themselves. To hear them so bereft of new ideas is disheartening. So is the fact that Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger are indelibly part of their bloodstream. "The End of the Line" and "The Judas Kiss" have bland hard rock riffs -

sticks and stones.... lol
I don't even care anymore so many people jumped on that band wagon. Its just like the whole Nickelback crap, everyone jumped on that bandwagon too. Dimebag was good friends with them and even played with them a couple times yet the people who swing from Dime's nuts also hate on Nickelback.
I just find it funny how people react to certain bands. To each their own! I'm diggin the new Metallica Album and will be seeing them live for the 5th time. Not a better raw live band out there whether its the new songs or old.My Home Theater (WIP):

Well after listening to DM, I like it a lot. Good initial sign was that I didn't yank the cd out of my player before the first song ended like I did on St. Lamer (although I finally did listen to it after my initial shock).
Trujillo definitely blends well with the band on this album; He seems to have settled in. Kirk was finally released from his cage and offers some excellent solos. Lars is usual, although his drums sound miles better than on the previous POS St. Lamer. Hetfield sounds better vocally, although I think the unforgiven III is his weakest vocal on the album.
Overall, nice speed with a harder approach. Like I said earlier, as an whole DM sounds more like Metallica than anything put out since Justice. Well doneReceiver: harmankardon AVR235

Leave it to Demiurge to troll out the one bad review on this album. Hell, they are playing it on Monday Night Football now.
A bad review? Actually they gave it a 5/10, and essentially tells it exactly as it is. If you actually like the music, no problem. You're either one of the fans that hopped on when TBA dropped or you're likely between the ages of 30 and 40 trying to relieve your youth just like the band is. With that, I'll wager that 5 years from now this album won't be in rotation on your system at all.
Of course you're going to deny it, but it is what it is.
I've seen the band 8 times and used to have incredible respect for their art. This middle-aged, trying to get back to my metal roots thing isn't working for them. The damage done to this band is properly termed as irreparable. There are plenty of metal bands still going at their age -- the difference is that they've never lost sight of who they were. -
I can't remember were I saw it, but someone (a fan) said, "The album is pretty damn good, to bad Lars sound on the drums is like he is playing on Coffee cans."
And that is the crux of what I have been saying since Garage Inc. It's just so damn ear fatiguing. look they came back with a good release no denying that, but I think the review hit the nail on the head, Metallica fans have been begging for this since Load, it took them 11 years to achieve it. Too little too late IMHO. -

whatever they put out, they will get savaged at this point...I liked their older stuff AND I liked the Black Album...it seems a lot of people and critics say you can't like both. You have to like one or the other.

But Lars has never been a "great" drummer and James has never been an awesome singer. All of them together work though. Metallica didn't become a great band because of Lars. It's their ability to play with tons of energy, have awesome live shows, and mesh well as a group. St Anger album was a pile of crap recording wise, but when they do some songs off the album live it has an entire different vibe to it.
I totally agree with you Krabby. If they released Ride the Lightning today I would almost guarantee that the same critics would come out and say its garbage just because it's new. lol

Last saw them around 2000-01.
...and how do you know if they released an album like Ride the Lightning it would be rejected? Those comments have never made any sense to me. There's obviously a reason Metallica has gotten **** for every album they've released since 1991. Trust me, if it actually sounded good I would be all over it.
I'm pretty honest about music. Having been one of their biggest fans growing up, it's not with any joy that I say my musical heroes now suck. In fact, Kirk Hammet was one of the main reasons I picked up a guitar way back when.
The band is and has been in a completely different mindset. It shows and the results aren't good. -
