If you're just a poser riding around town at 35 to 40 mph, a few miles at a time, you probably don't need hearing protection.

I usually go out for at least 100 miles at a shot, and thats usually two hours at 60 to 90+ average mph.

I'm honestly asking this - what enjoyment do you get sitting on the highway for hours? If I lived somewhere like Phoenix, where all the roads were flat and straight and the only way to get anywhere reasonably was the highway, I wouldn't own a motorcycle. I'll do 80-100 miles in a day, but most of it on back roads, because sitting on a highway going straight ahead is about as fun as falling down a flight of stairs.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

? I'd love to see you average 60-90mph on side streets. Are you just disagreeing with EVERYTHING I say for fun now?

Probably because doing 60-90 MPH is usually only done on a highway if you're riding legally. Just a crazy guess...

Just because in your part of the country you can't, doesn't mean I or William can't. The last route I took here in Texas was all country road, and easily 60+ average speed. Quite nice ride too, but can't call Texas very scenic though. For that, Hill Country over in Austin / San Antonio area is quite good.

This is the road: http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/tx_fm455.html (from Sanger to Celina)

90mph isn't legal on a highway either in the US, is it? I though Montana already went back to speed limits (or did they?).

I don't ride on the highway, I ride on the many curvy roads we have around here in northern Michigan. Mostly around all the lakes.

You can't do 60 on the back roads where you live? Wierd. My biggest concern when riding is being 100% legal.

I crack 60 occasionally on back roads in a straightaway. I don't maintain an average of 60-90 on a back road. Eff the law, that's just being reckless.

This has gotten way out of hand. Let's start over - I generally don't maintain a speed that causes any uncomfortable levels of noise while on my motorcycle, and feel that in the environments I ride covering my ears (moreso than my helmet already does) would be a hindrance to my safety more than a benefit.

The rest of you - have a blast. Good night and good luck.

It has nothing to do with what kind of helmet you have, mine's a Shoei RF-1000, very nice helmet, still loud though.

have to disagree. i got the shoei because it was noticeably quieter than the 2 different hjcs and 1 arai i tried.

its not quiet, but i wouldnt consider it loud either.

What kind of jacket do you have? Im looking for a good mesh jacket thatll keep me cooler than my current joe rocket in this texas heat?

Now this thread is truly entertaining

The best reason to wear hearing protection on a bike is ............. so you can't hear your wife/gf/SO on the back talk to you ........... because she should be at home baking you a pie rather than messing up your riding time :)

Depends on the road, your bike and you.

Like I said earlier, it's up to you. I'd still like to say it's not about discomfort, I don't wear the plugs because of that as I don't feel uncomfortable even at high speeds, it's about hearing loss. Wind noise, aka "Silent Killer": http://www.freehearingtest.com/hia_motorcyclefacts.shtml

How is maintaining 60+ on backroads reckless? Most these roads have speed limits of 55 anyway. Then again, I have a bike that handles and stops very well, I don't know what you are riding. If it's a Harley, I'm usually afraid to go over 50mph anywhere. Too slow at stopping and handling.

 Everyone thinks they're the ones that are exceptions to the rule, and are good enough to handle double the speed limit because of their mad skillz and awesome bikez. Good luck with that.

EDIT : I'm talking about going like, 30 over the speed limit here, not 60 in a 55.

From the above website (I would recommend reading it completely):

"Padding inside the helmet, open or closed vents, or added weather stripping on the helmet to alter flow patterns, does not significantly alter the noise level in a helmet."

"But even the best helmets on today's marketplace provide little help when considering "wind noise" levels at normal highway speeds."

"But these helmets still produce wind noise readings of 110 to 116dB's, from 35mph to highway speeds. "

I only have Joe Rocket as well, not the best for hot weather. This summer, I've left it at home and ride with a t-shirt. Not the safest option but I'm a very conservative rider, I don't fool around with the bike much. Yes, I drive fast but not reckless. Today was the first time I rode without a jacket to work. Let me know if you find a good jacket, I don't plan to ride like this too long.

Dude, I'm not some teenager, I don't have any illusion of being "mad skillz biker" (although there are some in the distant family that are). However, if you can't safely do 60+ on country roads it's either those 3 or the roads to blame. Just don't assume it's not safe elsewhere with other riders. I don't pop wheelies on the highway or do stupid stunts trying to look "cool", I just like to drive a little faster. Doesn't make me unsafe driver either, I don't take things to the edge.

Doing stupid things on a bike, no matter how good you are, is going to get you killed.

Demiurge, why does riding fast have to be associated with **** extension? Do you ride your Harley so you can feel "bigger", or do you ride it because you enjoy it? I guess everyone with big speakers have them for their "private shortcomings" too...or do they like the way they sound?

I think it was the comment that if you're not riding fast you're apparently a poser that tipped me off as to the type of person we're dealing with.
