Trust me when I say, you'll tire of a 250cc QUICKLY. Now, maybe if you were a 108lb female of small build it would do. Even a bigger, powerful bike isn't out of the question for a beginner. You just have to have the patience to ride it with caution. That said, I'd recommend something with lots of torque but not necessarily power, and preferably with low centre of gravity. 750cc Shadow is a good beginners bike IMO and used it's not going to set you back much more than the 250cc.
Even a 1300cc Vulcan isn't out of the question, as the cc's aren't created equal. In reality it's a very slow bike, at least compared to a 600cc sport bike. Plus it has a low centre of gravity making it easy to control in slow speeds. I ride a 1100cc Honda Blackbird, and I would definitely not recommend it to a beginner. Heavy with lots of power, just the opposite what you should be looking for. -
this could be hella fun....
but I guess I have a little bit of sensibility in my old age because I know it would be nothing but trouble in my hands -

I have to disagree. Not everyone needs or wants a bigger bike. It depends on what you want the bike for. If it is just a commuter bike the Ninja 250R will be more than enough with some occasional fun from time to time (and great gas mileage to boot!). Here are the pictures of the two bikes I've owned in the past. I didn't get to keep the 750 very long thanks to things like a wife and kids, paying bills and so forth. The CB750 Four was a great bike and a bit of a hot rod for it's time...but honestly the CL360 was a lot more fun to ride. I wish I still had it.
Honda CL360 (exactly like my bike)
Honda CB750 Four (similar to mine)

I have to agree with shack my bike is 1000cc and it is my first bike its a bmw r100rs. I actual would only need 250cc if it was a newer bike because mine is a dual carb set up that the power doesn't roll on as quickly as newer bike with fuel injection do.HT setup

Truthfully I've given this a lot of thought and decided to put it off for awhile. I'm going to get into pedal power for awhile first and get a little more used to the area I'm living in. As for Harleys, I did notice a particular clientel which I really didn't care for. However, I still considered the low end 800. I just saw too many high end looser wannabees in the showroom. (the harley place in this area is as big as a huge mall or recreational center). Still, the Kawasaki 250 or 500 looks like what I want. I'll do it here one day, just not tomorrow. Thanks for all the input! Sorry not to show you a conclusion.

EDIT -- I think you'd be better off with a road bike, whatever the brand, than a sport bike. They're totally uncomfortable. I'm 6' 6", so I am sure that has something to do with why I don't like them, but I have shorter friends with the same issue.

I don't want to start a harley war but what I saw was high end buyers who had not washed their hair for 3 weeks (or maybe there is a conditioner that gives you this look) with permanent scowls painted on their faces as they exit their BMW cars to walk into the place. Keep in mind this place has a LOT of people shoping around. I'm guessing but there may have been a total of 800 people looking around? They appeared to be either "the young group" with that "give me your best shot at death" look or the older "eff you, I look like I look and effin do what the hell UI want" group. Sorry, I don't know much about these attitudes. In any case, I am not looking to join either group and don't much care for what I was seeing. I'm just a common guy, making a decent amout of money and looking for a fun hobby. I don't need any of this to make me feel different from what my real lifestyle is. When I walked into the Kawasaki place, a normal guy walked up to me and said "what are you looking for and where do you plan on riding and how often will you be riding". To me it was all just a big distraction. Let me add that in my Khakis and dress shirt that no one gave me the time of day, I was not part of their "rider group". Eff em, I'll see them dead on the side of the road with no remorse. Well, maybe thats a little extreme...

Shack - I had a 1976 CL360 in orange/black. Great bike! I also had a 1974 and 1982 CB750's. A true classic bike that is still a great ride.
Well according to my ex-wife I fit the Harley profile as defined by other posters (or is that posers, I get so confused, let me consult my kids) in this thread. I'm not kind, I'm kind of a jerk (well according to her 100% jerk), and Lord knows I'm probably trying to compensate for something by riding a Harley. Someone call Dr f'ing Phil because I think I'm feeling like I need a hug, and that wouldn't fit the image my choice of motorcycle has thrust upon my lifeDKG999

Yes people were headphones to block out the wind noise that can ruin hearing.
